hi

looks ok, lets still do one more virus scan...:bigthumb:

Panda ActiveScan

  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button.
    • Enter your Country
    • Enter your State/Province
    • Enter your e-mail address and click send
    • Select either Home User or Company
    • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When the download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log

how is it running ?

Not online now.

Hi,

I have brought my home laptop to office, so can't access internet from the system, and hence can't comment, whether it is working fine or not...

Will do the scan as first thing upon reaching home and connecting to internet.

Or is there any possibility, I can download a product and scan it?

I have USB memory stick with me using which I can transfer any setup to my laptop from my office machine, which is having internet access.

Regards,
MM

Worm in activeX for Panda

Hi,

I am at home now and was downloading ActiveX for scanning, but while downloading, AVAST gave error that worm/virus was found, abort connection.

Information was "Win32:CTX" found. So I stopped downloading activeX.

Any comments for that??

hi

oopa, my bad.. i completely forgot the risk of false positives with avast and panda :(

it really is a false positive. avast is detecting the worm in panda's virus signature bases.( looks like the 2 scanners have the same signature for the virus )
anyway it is a false positive, try again and ignore that
if you get any more of those, and the detection occurs on panda files just ignore those too

Well, I can't ignore that as Avast just gives me option of Abort Connection... And I am scared to do the same mistake again of switching off my anti virus...

What do you say??

hi

your choice :)

why i asked you to run panda scan, well panda does disinfect ;)
kaspersky is detection only, so all infected files must be manually deleted, or cleaned

edit: looks like we posted at the same time

go for kaspersky

Will you be online?

I have started scan with Kaspersky...

Approximately how long will it take?

If you can let me know, for how long will you be online??

I should post the log of scan along with new hijackthis log... correct??

Shall I delete objects found in log?? Till now in 27% scan, it has found, 2 viruses, 1 infected objects and 2 suspicios objects...

hi

possibly several hours, depending on the size of the disk
its 23.59 here so i wont be online long

see you tomorrow

What say now??

great :D

all nasties are in system restore

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

Thanks a lot

Hi,

Many many thanks to you for helping me to remove this adware and in avoiding to re-install... :bigthumb:

Thanks a ton...

I will make sure to comply with all what you have written...

Few Queries:

1. Can I remove recovery files from Spybot?
2. As mentioned by you, I couldn't find Tea Time option of Spybot... will try to find again...
3. Can I delete all other software you asked me to install during clean up and just keep whatever you mentioned in last post?
4. Scan of Spybot resulted in few errors which are not even fixed during restart, information says it is backup file... what do you suggest?

Log of Spybot

Log: Activity: SchedLgU.Txt (Backup file, fixing failed)
C:\WINDOWS\SchedLgU.Txt
Cookie: Cookie (15) (Cookie, fixed)
Cache: Cache (597) (Cache, fixed)
Congratulations!: No immediate threats were found. ()
--- Spybot - Search & Destroy version: 1.4 (build: 20050523) ---

Everytime I run Spybot, it gives this error that 3 fixed and 1 not fixed.

Again thanks to you for helping me in all this. I would definately refer your forum to people and would keep a link in my webpages to direct people to you.

Regards,
MM
