Hello,

Spybot has detected something called Smitfraud on my PC & I gather I'm not the first.

Is this what is diverting links from search engines to porn sites, or is that something out?

Your help would be very much appreciated. The Hijack this & Panda logs follow here:

Thanks for the advice.

A couple of queries before continuing:

AVG:

On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.

There was no option to change anything here. The text just read "n/a".

Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.

I could not see anywhere to do this. Sorry. Does this mean I don't have to do anything further?

Of potential relevence here is the fact that I used to have AVG installed on my PC. It was detecting a PSGuard problem. I paid for the full version to access their help. We made a little progress, but then the emails from AVG stopped. I uninstalled AVG & requested a refund, but still received no response. Subsequently I ran some searches on Google, then posted on this forum. However, today I received this email:

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your email.

Because all mails sent you are returned, please follow these steps to remove the Registry adware from your computer:

- From the files you sent us appears, the Adware registry key contains embedded nulls in its name, which prevents deleting the key. To delete this registry key, please proceed as follows:

1) Download the following file:

http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/Regdelnull.zip

2) Extract all files within this archive into a folder

3) Within this folder, start a command line and type the following command:

RegDelNull.exe HKLM -s

4) In the command line console, you will be asked whether to delete particular keys and their subkeys - select/press key "Y" in every occurrence. The message "Key successfully deleted" should be shown.

After done, run a complete test using AVG to check that all keys were removed.

===================================================================
If the virus was not removed or does appear again after restarting your computer, we would like to ask you to send us the output of our utility AVG Anti-Rootkit. To do so, please follow these steps:

1) Download and install AVG Anti-rootkit from the following link:

http://www.grisoft.cz/filedir/beta/avgarkt/avgarkt-beta-1.1.0.29.exe

2) After restarting, run AVG Anti-Rootkit and press "Perform in-depth search", wait until the search is finished.

3) After the scan is finished, press "Save result to file" to save the file. Please send us these file for further analysis.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Best regards,

Jiri Kropac

Does this change anything?

Regarding your further instruction:

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
...
Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe

I rebooted into Safe Mode but could not see SmitfraudFix.exe anywhere. Am I looking in the wrong places, or is this something I need to download?

At this point, I didn't want to proceed without checking with you.

In summary:

1. Does the fact that I used to have AVG on my PC change your instructions with respect to this application?

2. Can you offer any suggestions regarding my failure to locate the AVG options described above?

3. Does the email from AVG change the advice within your previous post at all?

4. Where do I find SmitfraudFix.exe?

Sorry I have not been able complete your instructions. Your further advice is very much appreciated.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi

Sorry, I forgot to edit out smitfraudfix part, ignore it
AVG anti-spyware and and AVG antivirus are two very different things. Make sure that you download AVG anti-spyware , not AVG antivirus.

AVG anti-spyware is formerly known as ewido, you have it, so you should uninstall it before installing AVG a-s.

That email won't change my advice at all :)

So as for summary:

1) No

2) You can ignore that part,

3) No

4) Ignore that part too, my fault :)

So in other words, just do what i instructed :)

Thanks for clearing that up.

I have tried to uninstall eweido a number of times using add/remove programs, but the uninstall did not work.

I can't delete it through Windows explorer either.

Is there a way of deleting/uninstalling it through DOS or HijackThis? Or could we proceed without this step?

I look forward to your comments.

Thanks for the assistance.

Tried to uninstall eweido in SafeMode, but it did not appear on the add/remove programs list.

Using Windows Explorer I could delete everything except:

context.dll
lang.dll
shellhook.dll

Not sure how much difference it makes, but:

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp

I deleted these items after doing the AVG scan. End of a long day. Sorry if it affects the results. Please let me know if I need to do this again.

Also, I thought I was following your instructions by running AVG in SafeMode. But this meant that the "How To Act" options did not appear on the screen & were not reachable. I was able to click on the options "Automatically generate report after every scan", "Only if threats were found" and "Scan every file". I checked / unchecked them as requested.

Hope the above helps.

Hi

Please click Start > Run and type in: services.msc
Click OK
In the Services window find: ewido security suite control
Select/highlight and right click the entry, and choose: Properties
On the General tab, under Service Status click the Stop button
Beside: Startup Type, in the drop menu, select: Disabled
Click Apply, then OK

Now, go to Start > Run, and copy/paste the following into the Open box:
sc delete "ewido security suite control"

Click: OK

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Re-run fixwareout

Post:

- a fresh HijackThis log
- fixwareout report

Thanks for the instructions.

When I tried to re-run Fixwareout and HijackThis the following message appeared:

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access this item".

I tried uninstalling & reinstalling HijackThis, but when I tried to reinstall it, the following message appeared:

"Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded".

When I tried going to the website, the following message appeared:

"Welcome to Merijn.org. 403 - Access denied. The server does not allow you to view that file".

I this point I went to the recycle bin & clicked on the "Restore" option for HijackThis. However, the same message appeared when I tried to run it after re-booting.

I was able to run HijackThis from SafeMode, but not Fixwareout.

The HijackThis report follows:

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Thanks for your efforts. I look forward to your next post.

Hi

HijackThis log looks good4

You can't run HijackThis in normal mode?

Are you running as an administrator?

Hi

You may try a system restore to point where those were working or last good configuration from boot menu.

Thanks for that.

BTW, I posted an AVG log on the evening of 15 March. This was run from safe mode, but I was not able to see the tick options that you mentioned.

I ran AVG again on the morning of the 16 March in normal mode with all the options ticked as you specified. The results are posted below.

As you can see, although the DNSChanger showed as "Cleaned". It constantly returns.

I will have to check with my wife before using the system restore function.

Thanks again.
