Hi,
Have been infected with Antivirus XP 2008. Have the dreaded blue screen and a "warning Spyware detected on your computer"
Restore points have been removed, Norton ran virus scan, Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Powersuite Antispyware. have cleaned out
temp files, internet files, sysclean, and numerous other things. Have done this repeatedly in regular mode, still no luck.
What am I missing? Any help will be greatly appreciated...

No two computer are alike and no two infections are either so it is always best to wait for a helper.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hgGvWqOi.dll (file missing) <<< this is evidence of a Vundo infection but I see no more so we will start like this.

1) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

5) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Tell me how the computer is running, any malware symptoms.

First of all thank you for coming to my aid. Secondly, I read the "BEFORE you post" information and I understand and agree with what it says.

Just FYI, before sending my first report I deleted some of the virus using my anti-spyware and also manually. It was in the folder: C -- Program Files -- rhca71j0eva1 (or something very similar to this description). The uninstall was a joke and did not uninstall anything after i clicked it. I found and deleted this suspicious folder.

Regarding the recommendations provided:
1) I UNINSTALLED Viewpoint Player as recommended.

Oops, I forgot to tell you how things are running. So far there are no noticeable virus symptoms although my start up was so slow that I had to reboot within 5 minutes of starting the computer. But it is up and running now.

Previously one of the virus symptoms had been a random window popping up and telling me that my computer is infected and that it will start performing a virus scan. However, since this appeared randomly and sporadically, I can't be totally sure it is gone until sufficient time has passed without seeing one of these messages. But so far nothing appears to be out of the ordinary and everything appears to be running smoothly. Do you think the problem might be fixed? Any further recommendations?

Let me say this particul infection is more about defauding you out of your $$$ by selling you worthless rouge programs than it is about going after information, but I would personally take nothing for granted and follow all security suggestions at the companies you deal with. That slow statup is likely because of cleaning the prefetch folder as I mentioned in the last instructions. I don't see any malware in the HJT log and I think you are good to go. You may keep MBAM and ATF-Cleaner, but great freeware. I suggest you view the information from the experts I am about to post. Once you do, if you have questions, post them. I will leave the topic open for a few days in case you need it.

Hi again,

Unfortunately I do not think the problem is gone. I was out of the room (listening to some recently downloaded music) and when I came back I found the following web address surprisingly present in my browser:
http://www.mp3codec.info/codecs/load.php?id=6023%20&embedded=false

It had me cycling through a few windows alert boxes that said codec required [OK] and then another saying Install Codec [OK] [Cancel] [Continue]

at this point I couldn't get away by clicking [Cancel] so I went offline and clicked [Yes] to get rid of this.

I was directed to this address (but nothing happened since I was offline and didn't download anything):

I'm assuming this is more of the spyware from the original infection, although I was listening to some new mp3s at the time this happened. But I scanned the mp3s and they did not appear to be infected according to my anti-spyware software.

Help, I think there is still a lingering problem here...?

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

I have McAfee virus protection and after I download the program it detects both smitfraudfix.exe and process.exe as as "potentially unwanted programs" and deletes them before I can run anything. Any suggestions?

After we clean, in the next C:\rapport.txt, there may be a very large hosts file (items starting with 127.0.0.1) and I do not need to see it. Edit (remove) it from the C:\rapport.txt before you post it.

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infected files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt and a new HJT log.

and a report on performance, how is the computer running now.

Regarding My Performance Update
Things seem to look fine at this point. Again, the most pressing recent problems have been random popup installers using windows alert boxes. Since these problems arise sporadically, it's hard to determine if things are ok or not in the few minutes since I cleaned everything. Again, I may not know until I browse for an extended period of time without these popups. I will be out of town on Aug 24 so I won't be able to browse/test for an extended period of time until Aug 25. But other than the threat of another popup (should the problem still occur) things look fine at the moment and my system is running smoothly.

If you have the time, I am wondering if, in your opinion, you feel the problem is solved?

oops, I just noticed a problem that has arisen. My clock now reads in 24hour format (instead of the usual 12hour format). Now I see 00:55 instead of the usual 12:55(AM). I tried to click through my clock options to change it back but I don't see any options letting me. Can I change this back to normal and are you aware of any other unexpected changes that might occur?

You understand there are popups and there are popups. Once rouge programs/trojans get on the computer, until they are removed they can create popups even when you are offline. During routine surfing, if you visit a website that causes a popup, a good popup blocker like the Google toolbar/blocker, will usually block most of those. I personally take the time to block any website that does this, I believe it is poor business practice and I will no longer associate with those websites in any way.

I would like to take a look at the scan results of a good online scan, follow these directions when you are back to the computer.

Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
* Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
* Standard
* Scan Options:
* Scan Archives
* Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
* Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
* Now click on the Save as Text button:
* Save the file to your desktop.

Then post it here.

one more thing, I just received a popup in a Mozilla Firefox browser that mentioned an update to version 3.0 (see below)
This seems legit (since Mozilla appears to have a new version 3.0) but given my recent threatening popups I decided not to click this yet. Do you think this is trustworthy? Is my computer cured in your professional opinion?

Concerning that Firefox popup, I have run it for about five years and never had a popup asking me to update. Having said that, any website can get hacked, I would personally never click on anything, I would go to the website and download updates from there.
Hackers even use impersonate Microsoft sites to try to get folks to click on stuff to infect them causing Microsoft to send warnings that they NEVER send email to ask you to update. Have a look here:
