ARGGGG Can't do anything

She's had the computer for less than one week and now she's infected again!

Ok, after this, no more YouTube and other sites will be blocked at the router!

While I'm working on that, I need help cleaning up the mess.

Malwarebytes will not run or install. SpybotSD will not run or install. HiJackthis will not install.(The first two were left over from the last infection). :hair:
I downloaded the latest versions using another computer.)

Using System Explorer and Task Manager, I can see the programs in the process queue, but they have zero CPU and will not execute.

I was able to run RSIT.exe and below is the log. Prior to that, I was able to rename a number of suspicious looking files, by renaming them with "Suspect_" or "Virus_" as part of the file extension.

I looked at the System Recovery, but they've all been deleted. On the infected computer I cannot get to any of the AV sites, not spybot, AVG, not even support.microsoft.com.

I am running AVG as an anti-virus, computer is behind the firewall of a Linksys router, and Windows firewall is active.

I can boot in both regular and safe mode. I also have an MS Install disk with XP SP2 if I need to boot from there. If that fails, I also have a boot disk with an alternate OS that allows me to pull of files, but not change them.

I'm not afraid of using RegEdit or other tools to update the Registry or other system files.

That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

We may have to do some things manually, you have some nasty stuff on this system. What I would like you to do is to run Combofix in Safemode, boot to safemode with Networking and download and run Combofix, if it will not run than you need to download it from a known clean computer and transfer it by CD ( do not use a thumb or flash drive ) to the infected computer and run it .

To Enter Safemode

Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode with Networking
Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Hi Ken,

I've tried your first fix, but no go. Even though I downloaded and burned Combo fix onto a CD (on another computer) and booted into Safe Mode with Networking on the infected computer, ComboFix will not run on the infected computer.

I can see it using Task Manager in the list of Processes, but it always has zero CPU.

What do I do next?

Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.

Hi Ken,

Good news and some not so good news.

Good news is that the program ran. I had to reboot, but was able to locate the log file. And is attached below.)

Bad news is that when attempting to send it via e-mail, the machine shut down. I rebooted into safe mode and again brought up the log file. Just as I finished hitting the send button though, the system shut down.

I guess this means we are doing something the virus doesn't like. I'm thinking this is basically a good thing...

ComboFix still doesn't run. It sits at 0% CPU under TaskManager. I was able to run RSIT though one more time, and was able to get the log file off before the system shut itself down. Here's that log file:

Removing those entries with OTMoveIt did not do much good as something is putting a lot of those entries back with new file names. This is really one messed up computer. There is most likely a Rootkit type of infection that is preventing you running any programs.

Download Blacklight Rootkit Detection and Elimination Tool to your desktop

Click on fsbl.exe to run it and follow the prompts, post the log please

You need to enable windows to Show all Files and Folders

Hi Ken,

Very Strange indeed. FSBL scanned but found nothing hidden and thus removed nothing. There was no log file produced. (I had to boot into Regular mode, not safe mode to get it to run.)

None of the files in your list exist on the system, not in C:\windows, nor in C:\windows\system32 (I always have "Show hidden and system Files" turned on and "Hide known file extensions" turned off

This is actually Combofix renamed , it should run, try it in Normal windows and then in Safemode if need be.

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs
Double click on worksnow & follow the prompts.

Note: worksnow will run without the Recovery Console installed.
As part of it's process, combofix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Hi Ken,

Installed and ran WorksNow. Did my best to disable AVG scanner.

System rebooted twice, which I wasn't quite expecting, but it did complete none the less.

We can do web searches again, and we are not getting any more "unable to connect to internet" messages when disconnected from the lan. Also I was able to update the AVG to the latest updates without problems.

Finally I was able to install HiJackThis and run a scan for you. I'm not assuming we are done yet, so I haven't given it back to her

The system seems slow to me, but that could be because its "only" 2.00 GHz and 1 GB of RAM... (I remember when 8 MHz was fast and 8 MB of RAM was considered a "Maxed out rig"). Oh well..... I'll spend some time with it to see if it is just perception.

Good Morning,

Success but we're still not done. Keep in mind that this was one of the nastiest infections you could have gotten. It installed a Rootkit, this hides from us and also the operating system and prevents you from doing anything related to removing it.

-------\Legacy_TDSSSERV.SYS <--This was the culprit and it was removed but there are stiil files associated with it present. Lets do three things.

Keep Worksnow for now but drag Combofix to the trash and grab a fresh copy as its updated regularly

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Open Notepad Go to Start> All Programs> Assessories> Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad )and copy all the text inside the Codebox by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above File::

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.

Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<-- Don't forget this
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

Let me see the Combofix log and the Malwarebytes log please

Hi Ken,

Thanks for hanging in there with me. I guessed I missed you this morning, I went to bed just before you posted your last update.

I downloaded all three programs, burned them to a CD and transferred them to the infected PC.

When attempting the drag and drop with ComboFix, I first got the ComboFix "meter" like it was loading. Then I received the "standard Microsoft gray box" saying:
prep.com encountered an error and needs to shut down
with the option to send or not send the info to Microsoft.

This was immediately followed by a AVG Resident Sheild advisory indicating that the following file:
c:\documents and Settings\DominiqueS\Local Settings\Temp\3.tmp\b2e.dll

contained the Trojan Horse Back Door.SmallX.VX
which was "Detected on Open".

Should I ignore this one? Turn Resident sheild off when runing comboFix? or skip this step and continue with the other two?

Also, I should mention it looks like the nightly AVG Scanner ran and found (in addition to a whole bunch of tracking cookies) some new files that were infected; including tdssserv.sys which wasn't there when I looked.

Just thought you should know about that one, in case it makes a difference.

You should still have OTMoveIt, if not redownload it,

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.

Save it to your desktop.
Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

Here's the current status and log files.

OTMoveIt3 ran, log file below.

Ran the cleaner, but noticed that a few directories (hidden) still existed in Temp directory under Documents and Settings. two seemed to be empty and one had a default looking LMHOSTS.SAM file in it. (don't mean to throw confusion in here, just trying to be your eyes on the system.)

Malwarebytes installed version 1.30, but then popped up a window saying "Microsoft Explorer couldn't find Malwarebytes.org..."

I ran Firefox and downloaded version 1.33 from their link on CNET. It ran and found 8 infected. I made sure they were selected and then Removed them.
Logfile is below. (A reboot was required and performed)

Hi,

Your log looks fine but I want to be 100% sure those bad files are gone.

Run Combofix or Worksnow , which ever will run and post the log please

Getting tired of all this yet?? Let me tell ya, I have been in computing since windows 3.1, at that time kids and people with nothing else to do wrote viruses, at the most it may have made your screen wobble or some other stupid thing, but times have changed and infecting your computer for many reasons is big business for cyber Criminals. Not all but a great percentage of this garbage comes from Russia by a company that promotes itself as a legit company but in fact is responsible for almost 70% of all the major infections. They can steal your passwords to your bank including bank account numbers plus to many other things to write all in one post. Do a Google search for the RBN ( Russian Business Network ) there out of St Petersburg Russia.

Personally, if this was my computer I would have reformatted the drive down to bare metal and did a clean install of windows. Even after we have you cleaned up I would be reluctant to ever use this computer for any financial dealings like ordering merchandise online with a credit card or doing any online banking.

There is still some infection that we cant see preventing you from running the scanners.

Do you have your windows CD? Look on your C:\ drive ( go to My Computer > C:\ Drive and see if there is a folder named i386, if you do you may not need your CD. Its possible to have your computer scan for missing windows files , we may have to do this.

Lets try this.

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET

Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Hi Ken,

Yea, I know.. I've done that before on my own PC when I picked up a nasty one. I was just trying to avoid that with all her songs, and pics, and everything else she has.....

I'll give the scanner a try and let you know.

And yes, I have both the i386 group, a so called "image" disk from the manufacturer, and a Windows XP, SP2 install disk that I use when I need to use the repair console.

Hmmm Windows 3.1.... that was just an application running on DOS. (of course I started before there were PC, back when the smallest computer was a PDP-11. Boot strapping that required you to set switches. god help you if you were at instruction 56 and found out you didn't do 54 right... you started all over again!)

I'll let you know what happens.

Hmmm Windows 3.1.... that was just an application running on DOS. <-- Yep, Basically MSDOS with a GUI.

Let see if ESET will run , post the log and then do this.

Click Start>Run
Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
