Hello,
It has always puzzled me ,as to how this AVG came onto the Web,from a small company in Czechslovakia(yes I know they've split up).On top of which it's free, and supposed to do a better job than Norton or Mcafee, who charge for their product.I am very suspicious of "strangers" bearing free gifts,so I don't use it,no matter how wonderful it's supposed to be!!

Although my knowledge of AVG Technologies (formerly Grisoft) is limited to a wiki page, from my point of view the answer to your question is simple. A good program that serves people's needs for free is sure to be popular. It doesn't matter where a piece of software is made, its the quality that matters. Quality builds good reputation and I think that's how AVG have been able to sit at the top of download.com's chart for years.

The free version offers limited protection such as no rootkit scanning. AVG makes money by persuading their users to buy a whole security suite with extra features such as a firewall and spam guard. Many people instead make their own security "suites" for free by using specialised programs to target different threats (e.g. AVG for virus protection, Spybot-S&D for spyware ect) and to protect their computers.
