Browser Redirecting, Tracking Cookies, Can't fix

Hi,

Today, I ran CA Yahoo! Anti-Spy, which I do a few times a week. It detected the following items:

1) WinAntiVirus Pro 2006, which it categorized as "Rogue Security Software"
2) WinSpywareProtect, which it also categorized as "Rogue Security Software"
3) Bifrost, which it categorized as "Backdoor"

I don't think these were present a few days ago.

Thanks.

Hi

Here is the DDS log. I attached the Attach.txt file also.

In the DDS log, I replaced usernames and certain URLs with asterisks ******

Hi Jim Clark

Gmer
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here & save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

NOTE: If you cannot run GMER as indicated above, save a scan from the initial startup scan.
  • Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed & no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan
  • Double click the gmer.exe file
  • The program will begin to run & perform an initial scan. If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan. Click No
  • After the "initial scan" is complete, click on the Save button, save the log file to your desktop & post it in your reply

Hi Jim Clark
Today, I ran CA Yahoo! Anti-Spy, which I do a few times a week. It detected the following items:

1) WinAntiVirus Pro 2006, which it categorized as "Rogue Security Software"
2) WinSpywareProtect, which it also categorized as "Rogue Security Software"
3) Bifrost, which it categorized as "Backdoor"

I don't think these were present a few days ag

does not show any traces of those infections......where they are located ?

Thanks peku006

Oh. I removed them when the CA Yahoo! scan was completed. I should have mentioned that.

I run the CA Yahoo! scan about once a week.

I believe the computer was almost clean when these items showed up... you were asking me how the computer was running, I think it was almost clean at that point

I just did. Here is the report

Hi Jim Clark

strange that mbam found no WinAntiVirus Pro 2006 or WinSpywareProtect ,because it removes them both,
and they both should appear in the DDS log..........How to remove WinSpywareProtect
I do not know how "reliable" Yahoo! CA Anti-Spy is ,because I have not used it myself

how long time it used to scan ?

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

Thanks peku006

Maybe those results were false positives from the other tools I downloaded earlier?

Here is the log.

Hi Jim Clark
Maybe those results were false positives
yeah, apparently because they are not on your computer, all logs are ok

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created do the following:

Delete Rootkit Unhooker ,TDSSKiller and Security Check from your desktop.

Click Start >> Run and then copy/paste the following into the box and hit Enter:
%userprofile%\Desktop\GooredFix.exe /uninstall
If any of your security programs query a new Registry/AutoStart value being added please allow the changes.

Download OTC by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click OTC.exe
  • Click the CleanUp! button
  • Select Yes when the Begin cleanup Process? Prompt appears
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
Turn off System Restore-Vista
  • Click the Vista/Start icon.
  • Right Click >> Computer
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Protection tab.
  • Uncheck All drives
  • Click Turn Off System Restore at the prompt then click Apply.
  • Restart your computer.
Turn ON System Restore-Vista
  • Click the Vista/Start icon
  • Right Click >> Computer
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Protection tab.
  • Checkmark All drives that were selected previously then click Apply.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
http://www.update.microsoft.com

Here are some things that I think are worth having a look at if you don't already know a bout them:.

Spybot Search and Destroy
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Happy safe surfing! :bigthumb:

Hi,

When I try to uninstall GooredFix, instead it causes GooredFix to run.

This is what I typed in below:

C:\Users\*******\*******\Desktop\GooredFix.exe /uninstall

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

ok. I will manually delete it from my desktop.

Will the instructions in your last post be available for me to use as a reference after this post is closed?

Thank you very much for helping me clean my computer. I really appreciate it. It's running perfectly now
