Can't Remove "Fraud.WindowsProtectionSuite"

Hi skeptik

Anti-virus software are programs that detect cleans and erase harmful virus files on a computer
Web server or network.
Unchecked virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present and will clean delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

Let´s try eset

You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  • Please go here then click on:
    EOLS1.gif

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on:
    EOLS2.gif
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on:
    EOLS3.gif
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on:
    EOLS4.gif
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Thanks peku006

Hi peku006,

Tried the ESET scanner last night; when I awoke, the PC was frozen on the screen which says "Windows Is Shutting Down" and I had to leave for work. Same thing when I got home so I had to do a hard reset of the computer. So tonight overnight I'll run the scan again (since doing the reset lost the ESET log file--assuming it completed fully before the computer decided to F-up).

Hopefully this was just an unrelated Windows glitch.

Going to do the ESET scan overnight again -- thanks!

Well, that was faster than expected . . .

Here's the ESET results, copied and pasted to/from Notepad:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\eZulaHotText1.zip Win32/Bagle.gen.zip worm
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\MiniBugTransporter.dll Win32/Adware.WBug application

Hi skeptik

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery <--------empty this folder

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\MiniBugTransporter.dll <--------Delete this file

Empty Recycle Bin.

How's the computer running now? Any problems?

Thanks peku006

OK, so I think I'm good but . . .

I couldn't delete the file: C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\MiniBugTransporter.dll

. . . because I can't locate it on my computer. I pasted the file location into the Run function but Windows can't determine the program that created it (one of those).

So I just went to the folder Windows\Downloaded Program Files but the Minibug file is not showing. I checked and I already have it set to Show Hidden Files & Folders, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Regardless, I ran a Kapersky scan on the "Windows\Downloaded Program Files" folder and it came back clean (and I personally saw it scanning the minibug file) as well as ran a full system scan of Spybot S&D (also clean) so I think I'm OK unless you know how I can find that file to delete it.

I think the problem may be because (according to the intertubes) minbugtransporter.dll is associated with WeatherBug (which came factory-installed on my PC four years ago) and I've already deleted that parent (Weatherbug) program . . . maybe that's it. Whatever.

At least for all intents and purposes everything appears to be back in working order. I can't thank you enough for your patience and assistance throughout this. It's a noble thing you do here.

Hope the weather's nice in Norway, let me know if you still have any final thoughts, thanks from the States!

Hi skeptik
Hope the weather's nice in Norway
yes the weather is fine.....rain and fog:slap:

Let´s try this

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTM.exe to run it.
  • Paste the following code under the
    pasteline.png
area. Do not include the word Code.
    Code:
    :Files
    C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\MiniBugTransporter.dll
  • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Push the large
    btnmoveit.png
    button.
  • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Here is the result:

On a side note, I am starting to wonder if I have a problem with my PC and if it could be related at all (weird, since everything seems just about cleared up) . . . my computer keeps sort of locking up, such that the only fix (I'm aware of) is to Hard Reset it. I have just had to perform the THIRD Hard Reset in three days.

If it's any use at all, I'll give the details of what was going on at the time the freezes occurred and on which screens, etc.

Again though, I'm afraid this may just be an unrelated issue.

Thanks!(

OK, got Adobe Reader 9 from that link, installed with success but got warning about how fragmented my hard disk is, and that it might not work completely right until that's addressed.

Only recently I found out what de-fragmenting is all about and how I've been supposed to do this on a semi-regular basis. Never done it once; PC's about 4 yrs old. (And yes, I feel like an idiot. :))

I'm curious if said long-overdue defragging would mitigate/rectify the "freezing" issues I keep running into every day (have temporarily stopped by only turning on the PC when using, then shutting down Windows after finished. But, wanted to clear it with you first in case you'd rather me hold off until we've resolved the issues you're assisting with???

Additionally, when I go to Add/Remove Programs, I only see the new Adobe Reader, not the old ones which are still on the computer (I can see them in the "C:\Program Files\Adobe" folder), but I don't know if I should manually delete anything without using Add/Remove Programs (of if the lack of their appearing in that utility indicates they've already been disabled or something). Let me know if any further action needed in that regard.

Hi skeptik

we can check whether the old "Adobe version" still there............otherwise looks good :D:

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

uninstall-man.jpg

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply

How's the computer running now?

As requested . . . boy there's a lot of crap on here.

Also, everything seems to be working perfectly . . . haven't had the computer freeze up since I started keeping it turned off most of the time. It's quick as hell when I do turn it on. I'm going to try to defragment the hard drive overnight tonight and see how it does.)

Hi skeptik

Your log now appears to be clean. Congratulations! :yahoo:

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created do the following:

  • Double-click OTM.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

Here are some things that I think are worth having a look at if you don't already know a bout them:.

Spybot Search and Destroy
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing! :bigthumb:
