Can't run HJT

Delete both of those. Then download fresh copy of ComboFix but don't run it.

When you have fresh copy on your desktop (non renamed), copy-paste thing in code tags to your run box (click start->run):
Code:
Combofix /u

I have deleted the two combofix's on my desktop and download a new combofix to my desktop without running it. I copy and paste the following in to run:

combofix /u

A box pops up that says it cannot find combofix. You mentioned code tags, does that mean I should type it in like this?

[combofix /u]

No, just the text inside the box. Anyway, please do that CleanUp! operation with OTM as instructed a few posts earlier. We'll see ComboFix thing again if OTM didn't remove it.

Okay, OTM finished and I no longer see it's icon or combofix icon. There are others such as Hijackthis, GMER, etc.

Logs have been deleted. I clicked on a spybot icon and it said 'you may not have persmissions' etc. Should I try to delete that and download and install a new spybot?

I gave instructions for that kind of situation in post #36. You have to download that inherit.exe file and place it to same folder with .exe file that gives error about permissions and then drag'n'drop that problematic .exe to inherit.exe file.

Since the Spybot icon on desktop is just a shortcut you have to place the file in the folder that icon is linked to.

To find out that location, right-click Spybot icon and see which folder does the target point.

Okay, I have a four spybot icons on my desktop - one is from today - the others are from trying to get spybot to run when I had the virus.

Just like before, when I tried to follow post #36, I get the same 'no permissions' message even after using the inherit fixer when trying to fix one of the spybots.

I have now downloaded a new spybot into a new folder and it seems to be working - at least it got as far as asking if I wanted to update and immunize before I started this reply. I would like to delete the other spybots that do not work. Is there a problem with this?

You can delete non-working versions. Just be careful not to delete icon of working version.

Now what have I done!?!!?

I deleted the old spybot programs and I also got rid of a few games we no longer played and got rid of McAfee. I also downloaded AVAST anti-virus program.

Avast put two trojan files it found into it's chest. One was a zuma deluxe file and one was a system volume information\_restore... file.

While looking at spybot webpage, I noticed my icons were disappearing on my desktop. I don't know exactly what happened, but my computer will not boot now, not even in safe mode. I get the following message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please reinstall a copy of the above file.

I do know that spybot was popping up windows telling me that certain
things were changed. There was no option to reject the changes on those items. I did tell it to remember the changes.

I can copy the hal.dll file from another machine, but I don't know how to get it on my $%^&* computer! And even if I do that am I going to be able to get it back to a usable state? That re-install disc is looking pretty attractive right now!

Thanks.

That re-install disc is looking pretty attractive right now!
You seem to have so much issues there (that sp3 problem included) that probably best option is to reinstall.

I hate reinstalling after all the time we've spent trying to fix it but I guess we have reached that point. I really appreciate all of the work you've done trying to help me. I've certainly learned alot. I thought we were at the end of the process, too!

Can you help me with the reinstall disc? I've never had to do this before and I don't know how to use the disc if I can't get it to boot in safe mode. I can try one of the options given such as "last good working configuration", etc. if you can tell me which one to choose.

Hi,

For repair install you'll find instructions >here<

If you want to do complete reformat then I suggest tutorial >here<

If you need more help with those steps I recommend to open a topic on some forum that deals also with other than just malware related issues. Examples of this kind of forums are TechGuy and PC Pitstop.
