Running XP professional. Ran Erunt, but cannot run DDS.

My computer got infected the other day and whe I tried to run Spybot I got the following message

Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

I cannot completely remove Spybot because the file SpybotSD.exe is read only and I cannot change this.

I tried reinstalling spybot in a new directory, but I got the same results.
I have also tried installing in safe mode and running spybot in safe mode - all to no avail. I even tried the new Spybot 2 beta version and could not get it to run.

I noticed on a different thread some comments on .scr files, which have been loaded into the spybot directory. The instructions were to run these scr files and then Spybot would run. When I double clicked on these files, they simply opened in Notepad.

The symptons are that the computer has slowed down and IE gets redirected when I click on the search results in Google.

Finally, I am running Trend Micro anti-virus and I had an concurrent issue with PTCH_KATUSHA.W. I could clean this virus by running in safe mode with system restore turned off.

Please help me to get Spybot to run.

Getting Spybot to run is the least of your problems

Download DDS from one of the links below to your desktop

Link 1
Link 2

  • Double click the tool to run it.
  • A black Screen will open, just read the contents and do nothing.
  • When the tool finishes, it will open 2 reports, DDS.txt and attach.txt
  • Copy/Paste the contents of 'DDS.txt' into your post.
  • 'attach.txt' should be zipped using Windows native zip utility and attached to your post. Compress and uncompress files (zip files)

Its complicated

Thanks for the help Ken. When I try to download and run dds, trend micro blocks it because it thinks its a virus. I can't turn off Trend Micro because I don't have the password - its a work laptop that I have been using for personal stuff. To further complicate matters, I am traveling on vacation right now and don't have good access to the office. I will try again next week and post the resulst.
