Step 2 worked. Not the first time I've had to remove/reload, but wanted to avoid that as sometimes that can cause inconveniencies.
Step 1 yielded two or three additional error messages noting individual files that had been corrupted or were missing. Unfortunately, I did not write the names down as I thought the next update attempt would display the same errors.
The first time update ran after Step 2, the selection list of providers came up. This list would occasionally come up prior to the update failure, but not during the time update failed.
