Run this system cleaner.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up


  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    javaicon.jpg

    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 2 <--This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future


Post a new HJT log and let me know if you where able to delete that file and how your system is running now.

hi ken. i found the file in Program Files\Windows NT\, but it wouldn't let me erase it. the message said "Cannot delete nigoxohoz22011: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use."

what should i do? do you still want me to go ahead and remove the entry on hjt, run the atf cleaner, and replace my java? and by removing the entry on hjt, you mean clicking on "fix checked", right? just to be sure ...
 
Lets do this.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply



Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Then run the cleaner , update your Java and post the Avenger log and a New HJT log please.

Your log looks good :bigthumb: The only problem I see is with the Sony Rootkit. There is an ongoing class action lawsuit against Sony for this. What it has done, by playing one of the Sony CDs on your computer it installed a Rootkit program that prevents copying the CD, not always but on some systems it has caused system instability.

You can read about it here and make up your mind if you want to uninstall it. You won't be able to play any Sony music CDs if you remove it.

ken, i really can't thank you enough for your help (kinda weird, cause it feels like a two-way conversation but it's a public post). anyway, everything appears to be working fine. thanks for the information about sony's rootkit, too.

i just have a couple closing questions:

- so can i safely uninstall winantispyware2007? it's still on the computer and i'd like to get rid of it ...

- i was reading tonyklein's post "so how did i get infected in the first place?" and was intending to follow most of the directions (sp2, activex settings, spywareblaster, spybot, windows defender, spywareguard, ie-spyad, mvpshosts, one firewall and one anti-virus product). based on what you know about my machine, is there any of those things i should avoid or not install?

you really saved me. my computer's the most expensive thing i own, as i'm a fulltime student. but i'll donate what i can, seeing as how you saved it. thanks again for your help!
 
I don't see Winantispyware on your HJT log, it must be just the folder in Program Files.

C:\Program Files\winantispyware 2007<-- Just right click and delete it , let me know if it did not delete.

Here are some free programs to install, there all highly recommended by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
    Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give
    you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
    IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads
    (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and
    painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I
    wouldn't access the internet without it.
