The I-tunes update just came up and I decided to try to update it and it worked! Probably not a coincidence.
 
Hi Samwise,

Check Program & Features in the Control Panel and see if Spybot is listed. If so uninstall it.

Go to the Start menu, in the search field type Spybot search & Destroy.
Under Programs see if there are any listings for Spybot. If there is right click ans select Delete.

Reboot

Do not re-install Spybot for now.

Yes, please proceed with the Sfc Scannow step.
 
Hi OCD,

There were several spybot files and folders that I deleted, although it was not in the list for programs to uninstall. I ran into problems with the .command. It did not respond when I tried to run it as an admin. I moved it to the desktop and it still did not work. I just clicked on it and the black box came up with this text:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Users\John>

But I did not do anything.
 
You need to be logged in with administrator privileges to run this command properly.

The elevated command prompt will open to C:\Windows\System32 and not C:\Users\(user name) as the default command prompt without administrator rights.

Do you have administrator privileges on this computer?
 
Yes, I should. It is my computer and any one else who might use it logs in under my i.d. I will try to see if there is a different way to log on.
 
Okay, I just verified, there is only one way to log on and it's under my password. I have been able to run many programs, as you instructed, as administrator in the past.

Please verify that you have Administrator privileges.

Go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts



Next see if your user account is listed and defined as Administrator, if not select Change your account type.



Change user type to Administrator



Exit the Control Panel.

Re-run the System File Check step.



System File Checker (SFC)
  • Click on the Start button and in the Search programs and files box type the following:
    • command
  • Don't press Enter, just let the search results populate above.
  • In the search results, locate the Programs section.
  • Locate the Command Prompt shortcut and right-click on it.
  • Select Run as administrator.
  • Click Yes on the User Account Control window that appears.
  • Important: If you see a User Account Control window but also a message that says To continue, type an administrator password, and then click Yes, then

    your user account must be a standard account, not an administrator account. Before you can click Yes and open an elevated command prompt, you'll need to type the password of another

    user on your Windows 7 computer that has administrator level privileges.
  • Note: You will not see this window at all if your User Account Control settings are turned all the way down. See How To Disable User Account Control in Windows 7 for more information.
  • An elevated Command Prompt window will appear.
    • Type: sfc /scannow (There's a space between sfc and /scannow.) , then hit Enter
  • After the scan runs type exit to close the command prompt window

I verified that I was set up with admin. privileges and attempted to run it, no response. I lowered my user account settings all of the way and still no response.

That's seems a bit odd, let's try something different.

Let's see if we can get you to an elevated command prompt.

  • Follow the same instructions as before to open the command prompt window.
  • Next type "cd C:\Windows\System32" (without the quotes) next to C:\Users\John, then hit Enter.
  • If it works correctly you should have changed to this directory C:\Windows\System32
  • Then try and run the following step.
  • Type in "chkdsk /r" (make note of the space between chkdsk and /)

Create a new user account and give it administrator privileges. Then log into that account and see if you can get to the elevated command prompt. If so run the sfc /scannow step.

Resolving this issues is proving to be a bit more difficult than I anticipated. I don't think malware caused the issue with your Administrator privileges, so let's be sure there is no malware present. Then if you like I can refer you to our Tech Team and see if they can sort out your Admin Privileges problem.

How is the computer running?
Are you receiving any error messages? If so, what are they.

Everything seems to be running fine. I guess I just won't reload the spybot I paid for? Is MS security essentials and no script sufficient?
