mistake?

Hi OCD,
I might have made a mistake. I was waiting this whole time for adwcleaner to finish and when it didn't seem to be doing anything I finally decided to click the clean button (without re-reading your post), I later re-read your post that I should have clicked the report button. Nevertheless, here is the report from what I did.

NoScripts

Hi again OCD,
I am trying to navigate and am getting similar problems, just not as slow. The NoScripts bar is doubling up (one bar on top of another at the bottom of the screen) and giving all kinds of messages. Are you sure the problem is not related to NoScripts? I down loaded NoScripts and have been using them successfully since 2010 based on advice from this forum, so I hope not. NoScripts is NOT having any problem with the safer networking site.
Hamwise

Hi Samwise,

Running the Clean feature of AdwCleaner is not a problem.

Is the NoScripts issue isolated to an individual website?

Disable Plug-ins in Google Chrome

  • Click the Chrome menu
    chromebrowsertoolbar.png
    on the browser toolbar.
  • Select Settings.
  • Scroll down to Show advanced settings...
  • Locate the Privacy Section, select Content Settings
  • In the pop up window scoll to Plug-Ins, select Disable individual plug-ins...
  • Locate the following plug-ins and set them to Disable:
    • NoScripts
  • Exit Chrome settings menu.
=========================

Disable FireFox plug-in

  • At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP), and then click Add-ons. The Add-ons Manager tab will open.
  • In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Extensions or Appearance panel.
  • Select the add-on you wish to disable.
    • NoScripts
  • Click the Disable button.
  • Click Restart now if it pops up. Your tabs will be saved and restored after the restart.
=========================

Manage Add-Ons in Internet Explorer
  • Locate the in the upper right hand corner of the Internet Explorer browser window.
  • Left click, then choose Manage add-ons > Toolbars and Extensions
  • Locate the following add-ons (if present)
    • NoScripts
  • Select the add-on, and click the Disable button.
=========================

Re-run OTL (it should be located on your desktop).
    • Windows XP : Double click on the icon to run it.
    • Windows Vista, Windows 7 & 8 : Right click and select "Run as Administrator"
  • Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Uncheck the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

  • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt. (No Extras.txt will be produced)
    Note:The log can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of the file, and post it with your next reply.
=========================

In your next post please provide the following:

  • OTL.txt

response

Sorry for the wait. I'll start working on these instructions. The delay/scripts problem does somehow seem to be tied to web sites, for example nbcnews and NOAA weather, whereas other sites requiring a log in it's not a problem.

reply

Hi OCD, It's tough to really trouble shoot, because once I click on a site (i.e. nbcnews or NOAA weather) they lock up the browser. But I did go to a site requiring my log on and did not have the problem (much like this site). As for the disabling: On Firefox I got the warning/option "just disable no scripts or stop protection all together?" I opted to just disable until you tell me different. Chrome and IE, neither of which I use very much, did not have no scripts in the places you sent me. Both of them seemed extremely slow to navigate.

script not responding

I just tried to go to the desktop "live" accu weather icon that was installed with the computer and it locked up both itself and firefox. It took me 30 minutes, and using the task manager several times, to get back here. The multiple script not responding boxes stacked on each other with the option of continuing or stopping were not responding either.

Hi Samwise,

After each step reboot and check if the issues has been resolved.

On Firefox I got the warning/option "just disable no scripts or stop protection all together?" I opted to just disable until you tell me different.
Go ahead and select "stop protection all together" or preferably, if the option is available to remove NoScripts, then choose that. We can always re-install after we work out the problem.

=========================

Chrome and IE, neither of which I use very much,
Even thought these are not your preferred browsers, do you get any error messages when using either of these browsers?

=========================

Check and be sure you are running the latest version of FireFox.

Update Firefox

  • In the upper left corner of your monitor screen you will see an orange Firefox button
  • Click the dropdown menu, slide your mouse cursor over to the Help sub menu.
  • Wait for the Help menu to expand, then click on About Firefox
  • A small window will open similar to the one below.

  • Click on the Update button as shown in the image above.
  • Allow Mozilla Firefox to update, reboot if instructed to do so.
=========================

Uninstall via Programs and Features

Click Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features. Locate and select the following that are present on the list and click the Remove button:
  • Java(TM) 6 Update 35
=========================

Have you installed any new software recently?

=========================

In your next post please provide the following:
  • Update on status, any improvement?

Still having problems.

Hi OCD, Sorry for the delay, I have been away from the computer, thanks for your continued support. I still am having problems, and your right, it seems to be more intense with firefox, but the circle continues to lock up the other browsers once it starts in firefox, although strangely, it does not seem to be as bad and took more clicks to occur:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: https://choices.truste.com/ca?pid=g...EEE040022EF7F27020D67C000150101&sz=300x250:20

Other notes to address your questions and instructions:

Firefox noted it was already up-to-date.
I have not installed any new software except the paid, spybot home version, but I restored the computer to two weeks prior so it's no longer on my computer. The installed program updates show that many updated in the past month.

Google chrome seemed to move slowly.
The computer itself rebooted very slowly and took a long time for all of the desk top icons to appear.

I uninstalled the version of Java you indicated but there are still three versions installed: Java 7 update 9 and 45 (64 bit) and Java 6 update 26 (64 bit)

I uninstalled noscripts altogether via firefox.

As I type in IE, right now, the circle cursor is returning for some unknown reason.

From what I'm seeing and the information you are providing it appears that this is not a malware issue, but a problem with the script in the page referenced above that is casing issues. What seems to be happening is the script is trying to load and cannot, but is taking up system resources trying to do so. You stated that the problem is triggered when you begin to use FireFox. Let's first try resetting FireFox back to it's default settings. If that doesn't give any relief we can try a complete uninstall, reinstall of FireFox.

Reset Firefox to its default state
  1. At the top of the Firefox window, click the Firefox button, go over to the Help sub-menu
    (on Windows XP, click the Help menu at the top of the Firefox window) and select Troubleshooting Information.
    restfirefox1.png

  2. Click the Reset Firefox button in the upper-right corner of the Troubleshooting Information page.

  3. To continue, click Reset Firefox in the confirmation window that opens.
  4. Firefox will close and be reset. When it's done, a window will list the information that was imported. Click Finish and Firefox will open.

Reboot and check

You can go ahead and uninstall the Java 7 Update 9 (64bit) and Java 6 Update 26 (64 bit). Keep the Java 7 Update 45, that's the one you just updated to.

Report back with an update on performance.

I did as asked and immediately got this script message below when trying to navigate in firefox. IE seems to be working, but had a message bar on the bottom: "The Java (tm) plug-in SSV Helper add-on from Sun Microsystems is ready for use"
I clicked enable.

After spending some time on IE it began displaying it's own version of the script not responding message over and over again, however, it would not lock up. It did not matter if you selected stop or continue, yes or no.

Hi Samwise,

It looks like most of the issues you are describing are related to Java. Java issues sometimes can be a real pain to get ironed out, but let's give it a try.

I am having a bit of a time fully understanding your explanation as to which browsers you are getting which script errors while using. In furture posts could you format your replies along these lines:

Firefox : script error or issue encountered

Please test each browser you use individually, and report back any errors encountered.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Let's start by uninstalling Java, rebooting, then reinstalling Java to see if that corrects the issue.

Revo Uninstaller Pro

Please download Revo Uninstaller Pro and save it to your desktop.
(This version is a fully functional, 30 day free trial)
    • Windows XP : Double click on the icon to run it.
    • Windows Vista, Windows 7 & 8 : Right click and select "Run as Administrator"
  • From the list of programs click on
    Java
  • Chose "Uninstall". When prompted click Yes.
  • Make sure the advanced option is checked... then click Next.
  • The program will run, when prompted... click Yes... then Next.
  • Once the program has searched for leftovers click Next.
  • Check ONLY the bolded items on the list then... click Next... then Yes.
  • When done click Finish.
=========================

Reboot

=========================

Check Programs and Features in the Control Panel and see if any Java items are listed prior to downloading a new copy. If any Java is found delete it.

=========================

Update Java
  • Get the current version of Java (Version 7 Update 45) by going to http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
  • Select the Verify Java Version button and follow the onscreen instructions to update if necessary.
=========================

Reboot again

=========================

Once again test each browser individually and report back the results.

The Firefox tab up top shows "not responding" on and off when the circular cursor is turning. I am unable to click on any icons during these times.

I.E.: I cut the above message in order to paste it here, and since firefox was basically locked up at that point, I came to I.E. to log on to this forum, and this screen became non responsive for 10 minutes in I.E.

Chrome I am seeing the wait circle a lot but it is not interfering with the browsing as much as the other browsers.

General notes: Two icons stayed on the desktop (jre-7u9-windows-x64 and jre-7u9-windows-i586), but since the control panel listed no more java installed, I through them in the trash and emptied it.

Hi Samwise,

Have you successfully installed Java 7 Update 45?

Hi OCD,
Java 7 update 45 is installed and last updated yesterday afternoon.

Firefox: I left it overnight and the circle was still rotating, stuck. Had to use Windows task manager to stop it. I noticed at that time that McAffee Security Scan Plus was running so I stopped it.

Most of these sites are regular sites for me where I do not usually encounter script problems. I also tried some new sites such as CNN.com and still had the problem. I am usually warned by NoScript when visiting a new site and I have to indicate if it's safe or not (although it's off now, as you know).

All of this seemed to start sometime after the persistent Avira kept popping up and saying it could not connect to the internet to update, it used to update with no problem.

As I tried to start with the fixes in your last post, I realize that it's going to take more time than I have right now as I will be away from this computer until the end of this week. Chrome got stuck as soon as I opened it. I will complete the tasks when I return, and post.
In meantime, thanks again for your help and forbearance, have a great New Year!

Hi Samwise,

Hi OCD,
As I tried to start with the fixes in your last post, I realize that it's going to take more time than I have right now as I will be away from this computer until the end of this week. Chrome got stuck as soon as I opened it. I will complete the tasks when I return, and post.
In meantime, thanks again for your help and forbearance, have a great New Year!
I will leave the thread open and we can resume when you are available.

Happy New Year to you as well. :beerbeerb:

Follow up-Thanks for waiting!

Hi OCD, Here is the latest...

Firefox: I was navigating fine after returning to the computer since the last fixes and prior to making all of the cache cleaning changes requested in your last post (I think I made them correctly in Firefox, but it is definitely a different version then Firefox19). However, upon reboot and clicking on Firefox, the Accuweather icon that is on my desktop with current weather information and was installed when I purchased the computer, appeared superimposed over the Firefox/google home page as was the “Dell Stage” navigation bar that appears on the bottom of my desktop. I clicked to the Bengals link and the superimposed images went away, but the circle appeared, even when trying to scroll and not clicking on any links, as did the “Firefox not responding message” in the upper bar. In addition, in a lower bar was a message “transferring data from pagead2.googlesyndication.com”
I could not navigate at all and finally went to the Windows task manager, which noted Mozilla was running, and I was able to close it via the task manager. I am wondering if that accuweater icon, which is always connected to the internet, is causing or contributing to the problem.

I.E.: Seemed to be working fine after going to it, once I stopped Firefox, until I clicked on a link within an article on CNN.com and got the “script not responding” error with this script listed:
http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js?ver=20111117
I clicked continue and it seemed to work fine. I went to the Bengals.com site that was not working at all in Firefox and was able to navigate fine.
When I closed I.E., with no other browser open, the circle came up for about a minute but then stopped.

Chrome: Seemed to work fine at first, but when I returned to it after closing I.E. and went to the Bengals site, it prompted after a while that the site was not responding and asked if I wanted to kill it. When I clicked yes the site eventually loaded in its entirety but a bar appeared saying, “A plug-in, Shockwave Flash is not responding, would you like to stop it?”

More information

OCD,
I know I should not have done this without your instruction, but I wondered what would happen if I removed accuweather and the dell stage (see previous post) from start up. I had done this before, but prior to all of the other fixes, to no avail. I did it and rebooted and the garmin express tray black box appeared that I had not seen in recent boot ups, and which only started appearing in the past month or so. So, I went to the control panel to uninstall and even though it would uninstall all of the Garmin software, it said it failed to uninstall the express tray. I implemented the Revouninstaller, and went through the whole process and it showed the same garmin generated message that it had failed to uninstall, but then it allowed me to delete all of the bolded garmin software. Upon reboot the garmin express tray STILL came up, even after I clicked, in the start up menu, to delete the shortcut to it. It will not allow itself to be deleted or even to have the box go away. I have had trouble with this software, which I paid almost $100 for to get map updates, since I purchased it and Garmin's "help" folks have not helped at all.

Hi Samwise,

OK, let's do a complete uninstall of both FireFox & Chrome, then reboot and test the performance of Internet Explorer only. Do not re-download Firefox or Chrome at this time.

Show Hidden Files & Folders in Windows 7
  • To show hidden files, just click on the Organize button in any folder, and then select “Folder and Search Options” from the menu.
  • Click the View tab, and then you should select “Show hidden files and folders” in the list.
  • Then click OK.
=========================

Remove Mozilla Firefox Completely:
  • Exit Firefox completely
  • Go to the Control Panel > > Programs and Features
  • Select Mozilla Firefox (all versions, one at a time) and click Uninstall
    • You may be prompted with and option to "Remove my Firefox personal data and customization". This will also remove your Firefox user profile data (bookmarks, passwords, cookies, extensions, preferences, etc.)
      DO NOT select this option if you want to keep your Firefox profile data and settings.
  • Delete the Firefox installation directory located here: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
  • Delete the Firefox folder that contains temporary data located here:
    • C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox
    • C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox (if it exists)
  • Remove the Mozilla Firefox desktop icon if it still is present.
=========================

Uninstall Google Chrome

Windows Vista/ Windows 7/ Windows 8
  • Close all Chrome windows and tabs.
  • Go to the Start menu > Control Panel.
  • Click Programs and Features.
  • Double-click Google Chrome.
  • Click Uninstall from the confirmation dialog.
  • To delete your user profile information, like your browser preferences, bookmarks, and history, select the "Also delete your browsing data" check-box.
=========================

Reboot

=========================

Open Internet Explorer and test it's performance

As far as the Garmin software is concerned, sometimes files become corrupt and will not uninstall easily. You may either need to try and uninstall in Safe Mode, or reinstall the software and try and uninstall it again.
