Run I.E. alone

Hi OCD, I missed the context of this part of your last post:
Show Hidden Files & Folders in Windows 7
•To show hidden files, just click on the Organize button in any folder, and then select “Folder and Search Options” from the menu.
•Click the View tab, and then you should select “Show hidden files and folders” in the list.
•Then click OK.

I performed the other tasks (except for the Garmin uninstall) and rebooted. I.E. seemed to be fine except being a tad slow starting up and closing. I went to the same CNN link, within an article about the pope, that gave the script error before in I.E. and the error came back. Although it took a minute or so for the error message to come up, it otherwise did not create the endless cursor circle of delay. Otherwise, I could not duplicate the previous problems, for example, the Bengals.com site had no problems.

Thanks again for your help, it seems as if we are getting closer to a fix.

more testing

I just did a little more testing by going to my email (Hotmail) and going to some of the links via different vendor emails. One or two worked fine, but another one immediately had problems. What was different, was that I.E. had messages about trying to fix it rather than just the endless circle. The script not responding box with the exclamation mark in a yellow triangle appeared but disappeared when I clicked continue. Then the web site not responding box came up for the link with an option to recover the webpage. It was able to recover the webpage and eventually work, but the whole process took at least five minutes.

Re-test performance on sites other than the ones you regularly visit. I'm trying to test if the problem is isolated to a particular site.

In your next post please provide the following:
  • Result.txt

**** End of log ****

Hi Samwise,

Did you run TFC?

Please confirm you only have one Anti-Virus program installed and running.

Multiple Anti-Virus Programs Installed

I notice that you have multiple Anti-Virus programs installed at the same time. Having more than one antivirus program running at the same time can seriously degrade the performance of your system.
  • Microsoft Security Essentials
  • Avira Desktop
Please uninstall any one (1) (which ever you prefer) using either the provided uninstall feature that is part of the antivirus program or through Add/Remove Programs (for Vista and Win 7 users to go to Programs and Features in the Control Panel). As a rule of thumb one should run one firewall, one antivirus program in memory, and one anti-spyware utility in memory. It's fine to have other security tools available on an as-needed or on-demand basis, but when multiple tools simultaneously perform the same function, you're asking for trouble.

=========================

Reset Internet Explorer

Go to the Start menu > Control Panel > Look in the upper right hand corner and make sure the "Category" drop down menu says Small or Large Icons
Locate Internet Options > Advanced tab > Reset button at the bottom of the menu.

=========================

Reboot and test Internet Explorer

=========================

In your next post please provide the following:
  • Update on performance.

testing

Hi OCD
I did run TFC and re-booted.
I've been testing since last time and have not reproduced problem on new or frequently visited sites. Now McAfee antivirus is also running for some reason. I had uninstalled Avira to get rid of the hourly pop up that it could not connect, so it's curious that it is back. Remember, I purchased the Spybot antivirus home edition but had to uninstall it as part of the fix. I trust spybot more than any of the other ones. Should I re install it? How do you uninstall MS security essentials? I thought that was part of Windows.
Thanks,
Samwise

Hi Samwise,

The Avira might just be some remenants that are still present in the logs, let's move along and uninstall MSE & McAfee

Uninstall via Programs and Features

Click Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features. Locate and select the following that are present on the list and click the Remove button:
  • Microsoft Security Essentials
  • McAfee Security Scan Plus
=========================

Reboot

=========================

Re-install the Spybot Anti-Virus Home Edition you purchased

=========================

Reboot again and test

=========================

Test using Internet Explorer only still.

:bigthumb:

Hi OCD,
I think you were right about Avira. When I tried to delete an icon associated with it, it said it did not exist.

I uninstalled the other two (McAfee and MSE) and re-installed Spybot plus Antivirus home edition and ran the immunization. Of interest, when I have done that in the past it always said there were 100's of items still unprotected, but not this time.

I also reset IE as directed and decided to check the box to delete cookies, passwords and etc. I also tried to delete the Garmin express tray in safe mode and it could not be found...of course it showed up right away after I rebooted.

I rebooted between steps as directed and tested for a while with no inordinate delays, script messages, or frozen circle cursors. :)
It does take about one minute for the home page to finally come up when clicking on the IE icon and some links were slow, but that may be a function of the sites.

I'll keep my fingers crossed. I think we may have arrived at a fix. Should I re-install and use "NoScript" or Mozilla?

Regards,
Samwise

Hi Samwise,

Yes, go ahead and reinstall Mozilla Firefox, reboot then test.

If all goes well with the test, then reinstall the NoScript add-on.

Reboot, and test again.

Trouble with I.E. and mozilla

Hi OCD,

As I was navigating to install Mozilla, a couple of web pages started not responding and I got the prompt to reload them, which was successful. Also this site went white and I had to re-navigate to it.
When I tried to download Mozilla it asked for an administrative password, which it did not accept, or to navigate under my user name. When clicked, the whole down load process eventually disappeared. So I have not been able to load it. Any ideas?

Hi Samwise,

Thanks for the log.

Prior to re-installing Spybot's Anti-Virus, were you able to view web pages with little to no difficulty?

If so, try uninstalling Spybot's Anti-Virus (again), then try and download and install Mozilla.

Before you attempt this you should install a different Anti-Virus so you are protected during the test.

Here are a few to choose from:

Microsoft Security Essentials
Avast

Test and report back results

Spybot

Hi OCD,
Sorry for the delay, I was trying to find the time to do adequate testing. My sense is that the problem got a lot worse after installing spybot antivirus. I was having the persistent avira that suddenly could not connect to the internet to update, a fact it seemed to remind of every ten minutes, that I put up with for a month. That is what drove me to get rid of avira and purchase spybot in the first place.

I did as you instructed and uninstalled spybot and installed MSE and have been navigating without the errors. I did get the bar popping up saying 'an add on for this site failed to load', or 'this site stopped responding' a couple of times but clicking on the prompt corrected it.

Do you think the problem is with Spybot?

spybot

Hi OCD,
I wanted to get some more time testing before responding. I am still getting an occasional IE not responding message, but it seems to be able to correct itself. Are you aware of anyone else having problems with spybot? I know the free version always worked well. What next?
Thanks,

Hi Samwise,

Are you aware of anyone else having problems with spybot?
I have not heard of others having an issue similar to yours. But I only volunteer on the malware removal forum, so if others are having issues it might be talked about in a different sub-forum.

If you are satisfied with how the computer is performing, we would do a little housekeeping (remove tools & logs generated) and give you some suggestions for helping you stay malware free.

Please let me know if you have any remaining issues you would like to address.
