Failed to update?

There are manual detection updates available here you can download, under Other Downloads:
http://www.safer-networking.org/dl/
You'll see a Browse button when you open spybotsd_includes.exe.Please click browse, then go to your main drive(probably C:\)Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy 2,and click OK.That should get you the detection updates, and you should be able to do a system scan after they're installed. :)

And after that, try opening Spybot start center, checkmark Advanced User Mode, click Settings, then the Internet Protection tab.If Use Spybot Proxy is checkmarked, please uncheck it,then click Apply.
Also, while you're there, please click the System Services tab,and let me know what the button says beside Updating Service. Then click OK to exit Settings.
Check for updates, let me know how it goes.

Hi Zenobia
I was able to download the detection updates and run a scan.
Spybot Proxy was not clickable.

"System Services tab,and let me know what the button says beside Updating Service.

it said this (picture below)

After that I tried do download as you told me, but

"[00:00.000] Update started...
[00:00.031] [+] Updating Service is active.
[00:00.047] [.] Trying to retrieve update info file from http://updates1.safer-networking.org/spybotsd2.uid...

It went not further
So I think there is still something wrong, but what?

Thanks so far
Hans

Thanks for the screenshot, and your answer.Very detailed,I like that. :)
My rough translation of the error is "Could not start update service.Error code (5):Access is denied." Do I have that right,or close to it?
Is the account you use on your computer an administrator or a limited account? If you aren't sure, you can check by clicking Start, click Control Panel, and then clicking User Accounts, and your account type should be listed.
Also,do you remember any errors showing when you were installing Spybot 2.4?Any errors about access denied,or anything like that?

Zenobia

"Could not start update service.Error code (5):Access is denied." You got it correct.
Account is administrator
I did not have any errors when installing SpyBot 2.4

Hans

Ok,thanks. :)
Are you familiar with editing the registry? What I would like to do is check permissions on a registry key,if you're okay with that.Your English is very good, and I'm fairly sure that the registry key should be the same anyways,so it shouldn't be an issue, and I would tell you how to back up the registry just in case.If you'd like to try that, please let me know.

Zenobia
Well I'm not that current with changes in the registry, have done it two or three times. I think it's no problem to check a value.
I hope it works.

Thanks again
Hans

Okay, good. If at any time you're unsure about anything or the registry key names don't match, etc.,please stop and just post back, and I'll adjust instructions or try to do things differently. :)

Click Start, then Run,type or copy and paste regedit.exe into the text field, then click OK.Please refer to this page to backup your registry:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windowsxp/ht/backupxpreg.htm
Once that's done,go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\SDUpdateService
If SDUpdateService isn't there, please post back and let me know.It might not be.
If SDUpdateService is there, rightclick SDUpdateService and select Permissions.See if your username has full control.Your username should have Administrators at the first of it.It might look like this, for an example:Administrators(Hans-PC/Administrators),if Hans is your account name.Post back, and let me know what you find.

No need to stay up late or anything like that, just post whenever you have time. It's all good. :)

Yes,it looks like you have full control,if the administraten account is yours.
Go to Start,Run,type in Services.msc,and press OK.(if that doesn't work,let me know.)
Scroll down to Spybot-S&D 2 Updating Service (or it might be called Spybot-S&D 2 Aktualisierungsdienst or similar.) and click on it,then click Start.Let me know if you get the same error 5 Access Denied message.

Zenobia
Yes, I get the same error message 5, see picture below.
It's normal working late on my pc.
Will you please remove the picture in post 70.

And thanks again
Hans

I'm not able to remove the picture for you.If you click this link,it should take you to any attachments posted by you,and you can delete the picture in post 70(or any others you would like to remove) by putting a checkmark next to it,and clicking delete selected below.

I do that,too. :coffee: :D:

Would there be any chance that something might have been set through Group Policy to deny access to some services?I was looking through a spreadsheet for group policy for Windows XP,but there are a lot listed and I couldn't find anything.

Sure, though I don't know an overabundance about it myself. :)
This is a beginner's guide about group policy:
http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/policies.html
I have Windows 7 Home Edition,so I don't have access to group policy,so I'm not too familiar with what can or can't be done with it.It wouldn't be likely that a restriction would be set, especially with you being on an administrator account, but I thought I'd check with you about it being any kind of a possibility.

I see all three Spybot Services are set to automatic in your prior screenshot, but none of them started.
If you don't mind, could you go in for a second look at Services?Go to Start,Run,type in Services.msc, and press OK.Scroll down and then click on Spybot-S&D 2 Scanner Service, then click start.Do you get the same Access Denied Error message?
I see SQL Server is started. When you look through your other Services listed, besides the Spybot ones, are most also listed as started under Status?

Hi
Yes, I get the same denial of access .
Most oft the services that are set on automatic are started, I have some that are not working when pressing "start"

Hans

Are the other ones that aren't working when pressing "start" giving you the same access denied message? :)

GHi Zenobia
two have another failure indication(Google update service), three have the same denial of access: Adobe File Monitor V10, devolo network services and another which I don't know what it's for.
Something else got on my mind: I installed your program on partition D, where I have most of my programs. I remember having had problems with another software until I installed it on drive C. Could this be the problem? I wanted to have the OS on C, prgrams on D and data on E.

I'm not sure, but I'll search to see if I can find anything on that.Could you describe the problems you had with the other software when it was on D:\?Was it similar to the problems you're having with Spybot now?

Could you go back into Services and see if Adobe File Monitor V10 and devolo network services have Lokales System listed beside them under Anmelden als?
Also, did it give you an error code and message when you tried to start Google update service?
