Fakemsn8Beta - Big Problem

Hello,

My son seems to have obtained the fakemsn8beta infection from windows live messenger.

I was running a weekly spybot and it was shown, along with a windows security disabled notice and a redirect notice.

I "fixed" the problems and immunized the system, but it keeps showing up.

I noticed that it would not let me run a registry fix program, and it also won't let me visit any sites that might offer removal softaware. It shuts the IE down or redirects to 1.1.1.1 .

I could download hijack this, but it will not let it run. It will not let me update any other antivirus info ( Norton) and both the NOrton online scan and one of the on-line scans discussed elsewhere in the forums both did not return any infections.

I also read somewhere about another file msnvirr or similare, but when I try to download this it will not allow it.

Everything I have read says to run the hijack this to create a report, but I can not do this.

I have noted that a lot of information I have read about this problem fakemsn8beta seems to be older, 2006 so I wondered if there was a new round of the problem or if there is an easier fix currently.

I do not know what the program does other than stop me from updating security and lowering my security features, but that in an of itself is enough to bother me.

I tried to read other FAQ's before posting, but none seem to apply to a case where you can not run HJT or MSNVIRr

Hi THESPR

Download HostsXpert and unzip it to your desktop.

Open HostsXpert that you earlier unzipped on your desktop

Click "Make Hosts Writable?" upper right corner (if available)
Click "Restore Microsoft's Original Hosts File" and then click OK
Close HostsXpert

Note; IF you used any custom Hosts (eg. MVPS Hosts), you will have put them back manually

After that:

Boot in safe mode and let me know if you can run HijackThis there.

If so, post HijackThis log here, please

Fakemsn8Beta- Big Prolem

I read your post and did what you ad indicated.

I ran the hostexpert, I noted that there was a toggle that said make hosts writable and made hosts readable. SO I got it so it said make hosts writable, then clicked it. This then said make hosts readable? So I don't know if this accomplished what you hoped.

After that I was able to run the HJT program and got a log which I have attached.

This fakebeta things is smart. It redirects me away from pages that might help me fix the problem and now it has sut down my windows documents when I have located the log in the hijack this folder!!

Here is the log. I will try to do this in safe mode as it will not allow me to upload the hijack this log.

Please advise.

Fakemsn - Geting soomewhere

Shaba,

I have do as instructed. I did the scan, fixed the checked items, rebooted, deleted the aapopfefaa folder and ran a new hijack this.

Note, I was able to run the hijack this is regular mode ( not safe mode) for the first time, so we must be getting somewhere.

In the future please don't attach HjT log but copy/paste contents of hijackthis.log to thread

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

o Scan Options:

+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Fakemsn - Complete

Shaba,

Everything seems to be back to normal. I can run the programs and updates for antivirus etc and visit any page. I am no longer finding fakemsn in my SPybot S & D and my browser is no longer being redirected.

Looks like the problem is solved, thank you very much.

I am not sure how we got the thing, other than through my son's msn page and something that was sent via that.

We have norton antivirus, but it did not find this. Should he scan anything he gets ?

Other than taping his hands to his ears, I don't know how to stop the msn action, so the next best thing is to set some rules.
