Logs

Hi

I have no clue if that log was supposed to be that long. If I screwed something up, I apologize for posting that disaster......

Thanks for your help

Hi

I've got very bad news for you

You have Virut infection there. That means you have no other option left than reformat the system. You may backup important things but not following file types since Virut infects them too:
  • .exe files
  • .scr files
  • .zip files containing .exe and/or .scr files

Ugh!

Oh well, my husband has been waiting patiently with the XP CD in hand the last few days while I tried this. I told him I would destroy "it" (picture my fist being shaken in the air while saying that)... he laughed. I just thought of something though... he did already back everything up though... so what should I have him do to undo the bad stuff being backed up?

Let me ask you this... he has been playing Call of Duty 2 online. Any chance that doing this is where it came from or could it just be anything?

We also, obviously, need to get something stronger to protect our PC. Any things you would reccomend?

And, thanks very very much for all of your advice & help!
Shelly

Back up is infected too.

Hi
I did confirm with hubby that he backed up stuff to our 500GB external hard drive. So, I am going to go ahead & assume that suckers infected.

I think that we might need some advice on reformatting as I read more about Virut & see that many folks reformat only to find that they are still infected.

What's your # there in Finland? JUST KIDDING!!! I have to find some humor in this mess....

:):)

Hi Shelly

I'm not sure where Virut came to your system. I've heard it spreading thru illegal downloads but probably spreads other ways too.

As said, Virut infects .exe, .scr files and those .zip files that contain .exe and/or .scr files. Might be better to empty external hard drive and then backup necessary files that are not abovemeantioned type.

Very good tutorial for reformatting can be found here.

Backup

OK, thanks. We mostly want to salvage the pics of the kids and maybe some other stuff but the rest can go from that drive.

Thanks again for all your help!

You're welcome :)

I'll keep the topic open for a few days in case you need to ask something.

External hard drive & backup

Hi
My husband went through the drive that he did the backup on & did find some scr files on there. He can't delete them though. It says that they are in use or something. He is scanning the drive right now with mbam. I guess my question would be, what if he can't remove those files? Should we put whatever we want to save on a CD (pics & music) & do... what?

I was hoping to have this be a done deal but here I am again!

Thanks!
Shelly

Hi

If you still got those files you're going to backup on internal hard drive too then it might be easiest to reformat external one.
