General wonkiness (starts with Ad-Aware Update Manager appearing)

Hi,

Logs look good. If Spybot found items are cookies you may ignore those. It's normal that those are found after browsing session.

Are you still noticing any problems (other than cookies)? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK

Please download OTC and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTC.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the
    Begin cleanup Process?
    prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    1. [*]Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) [*]Click run [*]In the dialog box, type services.msc [*]hit enter, then locate dns client [*]Highlight it, then double-click it. [*]On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. [*]Click ok
  • Run Secunia vulnerability check here and fix its findings.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

I noticed that Google Chrome was acting wonky again, ran Spybot again, and yep, Win32.PornPopUp appeared again. I got rid of it, restarted the computer, reran Spybot, and it's gone for now (though needless to say I'm only going through AOL right now instead of Chrome and really cutting down on web traffic until this is totally resolved). Here are the new logs, if everything looks okay I'll go ahead and follow the steps you listed above:

Yep, looks ok to me. You may want to do complete reinstall to Chrome.

Well, I ran Spybot one last time, no virus. Followed the instructions up above, ran Spybot, no virus. On a whim I visited a few of my regular websites, ran Spybot again, guess what? Yep, virus. Got rid of it and rebooted. Am literally just about to have family over so I don't have time to rerun Spybot, but here are the DSS logs. (2 probably 'duh' questions: does win32.pornpopup work from downloading a file from an email or from visiting a website, because I've narrowed down the suspects for each option. Also, I use Google Chrome instead of Internet Explorer as my main browser, aside from AOL 9.1. Are there options in Chrome I could check to make it safer, or would I be better switching to Firefox? Thanks.):

Hi,

If you click "+" in front of infection in Spybot findings does it show a cookie? As I said earlier, cookies can be ignored since you can't avoid those completely (by installing MVPS Hosts file, introduced in my post a bit earlier, you can decrease the amount though).

Actually it was the win32.PornPopUp virus that (re)appeared. If it shows up next time I'll click and see if shows up as a cookie.

Name may appear as win32.PornPopUp but if it's cookie type then only chance to possibly prevent it from reappearing is to use hosts file.

Well, when I ran Spybot yesterday, it stopped running in mid-scan and gave me the following warning: "C\Program Files\Spybot-Search_Destroy\Includes\TrojansC-03.sbi (Access violation at address 00501D3D in module 'SpybotSD.exe'. Read of address 170D447C". A second scan showed nothing.

However, when I booted up tonight I got the blue screen and "The volume is Dirty" message. CHKDJK verified the files (correcting a "minor error" in file 86109), index, and security descriptors, though when I got to Desktop I got a "Setup Error: Failed to load resources from resource file. Please check your setup". I rebooted and got a Registry Recovery message ("One of the files containing the system registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful"). Plus my McAfee retime scanning has been disabled again.

I did run Spybot again just now and got the "No immediate threats were found" message, but will all that just happened is there something else I should do?
(and this will sound lame, but how do I just use the hosts file?)

Hi,

One thing I'd do is to take backups of important stuff (photos, videos, music etc) to external drive. Those problems you described may be a sign of hardware issue.

this will sound lame, but how do I just use the hosts file?
I posted about Hosts file once already but here it's again:
hosts file:
  • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
  • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
  • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
  • However, it can slow down certain computers.
  • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
-Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
-Click run
-In the dialog box, type services.msc
-hit enter, then locate dns client -Highlight it, then double-click it.
-On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
-Click ok

Hi. Good news is that the win32 virus hasn't reappeared, bad news is that I'm still having problems with the blue screen appearing, etc. The virus may be gone, but might it have done damage to my hard drive(none of this happened before I got the virus).

Hi,

Does the blue screen errors still say about volume dirtiness? Run a disk check by following instructions here.

Hi,

Does the blue screen errors still say about volume dirtiness? Run a disk check by following instructions here.

I've tried several times, but I keep getting "Windows is unable to complete the disk check" meassage.
The Win32 virus hasn't showed up on Spybot since then, but could it have done some damage to my computer?

Hi,

To me this looks like possible hard drive problem. It would be recommended to backup all important stuff (photos, documents, videos, music etc) to external drive. After that you may try to run disk check in safe mode.

Hi. I backed up my files and tried to run the system check twice while I was in safe mode, but I'm still getting the ""Windows is unable to complete the disk check". (Blue screen came up earlier as well). Could the virus have tweaked the hard drive?

Good question. I don't recall seeing that kind of thing earlier where infection would had done that. If you have important stuff backuped I recommend to do clean reinstall for Windows. If the same issue shows up after that then it's very likely hard drive near its end.
