Getting A "Warning Fatal Error" message

My son's computer is getting a pop-up that states "Fatal Error: The media system on your computer is corrupt. Update your video codec immediately to resolve this issue." I did a google search and from what I found there this is a spyware problem. I've run updated Spybot Search & Destroy a number of times, but the problem still persists. What do I need to do to be rid of this?

I should add that he's running Windows XP and the default media player is Windows Media Player.
