hard to find malware

Currently I am using symantec antivirus corporate and spybot search & destroy. However, I can not get to windows update to load it goes back to google. Also kapersky online scan does not load because it says the applet has failed & I should go online to run the scan but when I do that it can't find Java at all and tells me to install Java, but when I go to the Java site and test it they say java is working fine I attahed the log file from hijack this.

I have run a number of scans but none of them detect any problem: Spybot search and destory, trojan remover, iobit advance care, Kapersky's conficker removal tools along with a couple of others. Called Bill's boys they were unable to figure it out either and that's why they're gonna put a whole research team on this problem right away to figure it out and once they figure it out they're gonna call me right away between 7-9 sometime during the next five to seven days, so they told me to just sit by the phone and wait so as I don't miss the call. However, I thought I better get some answers from somebody who knows what is going on thus this post. I know only enough about fixing malware to know I should ask someone else. I would certainly appreciate any assistance you can provide.

Hi,

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer to make sure it won't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
  • Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
  • If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
    select
    Advanced Mode
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools
  • Then click on the Resident icon in the list
  • Uncheck
    Resident TeaTimer
     and OK any prompts.
  • Restart your computer

Online scanner

Hello Blade,
I went throught the steps indicated however, I was not able to get eset online scanner to scan the computer. The link took me to the Beta version and the window with the accept terms checkbox turns blue and the only thing reflected in the address bar is "http://www.eset.eu/eset-online-scanner-run?i_agree=Start"

If I go to the "non-Beta" version of the eset online scanner and accept the terms the address bar indicates the same thing however the lower left corner of the window has a caution indicater next to the "Done" when I click that another window comes up which says "Problems with this web page might prevent it from being displayed properly or functioning properly. In the future, you can display this message by double-clicking the the warning icon displayed in the status bar." then in the display window it says:

In looking at other pages there appear to be errors on other pages including the page for this forum.

However, most of the pages display enough info to see the page. What ever thing thing is it seems to mostly be affecting the ability of internet explorer to operate properly. Windows update page still displays the google page which is the default page in internet explorer.

I also tried kaspersky online scan which also does not work. Previously it indicated a problem with Java. Now it says that the download of the update failed. I think this is because the malware is blocking most all websites that would allow me to fix anything. Let me know if there is anyway around the online scan that I can use to complete the online scan.

Blade regarding the proxy address to the best of my knowledge this was not something I did. However, I think the errors on the web pages were occuring before I removed the proxy address.

Every time I check the box in front of the proxy address to remove it hjt says it wl dedlete the setting but after i reboot and rn hjt the proxy address is back. Is this the problem? I do not know why this would do this unless it has something to do with Symantec antivirus.

Do you connect to internet through a router? If you do then you have to reset it to factory default settings. To do this there should be a reset button or hole which has to be pressed for 15-20 seconds. After resetted, please change router's password to stronger one from default.

Then fix that proxy related entry from hjt log and reboot. Post a fresh hjt log back here.

I reset the router and then fixed the proxy issue. I think you have done it! I was able to run the online sanner at eset and is found 8 files of Adware.virtumonde.neo and cleared them off. I ran windows update and it is working! below if the new HJT log file with no more proxy address, You are a genius! let me know if you see anything else I need to worry about but I think I am working fine now thanks to your assistance. :thanks:

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis



Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type "c:\documents and settings\Dana\Desktop\ComboFix.exe" /u in the runbox and click OK


You may delete ipSettings.txt file and other log files created during the cleaning process too.


UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.


Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
    If you don't have a 3rd party firewall or a router behind NAT then I recommend getting one. I recommend either Online Armor Free or Comodo Firewall Pro (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage" and install firewall ONLY!). Both providers have support forums that help with configuration related questions.


Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

I made the changes per your instructions and downloaded and set the hosts file and went through the tutorial. One final question regarding the firewall. Currently my computers are connected to firewalled wireless router, which in turn is connected to a cable modem and thus the internet. Are you suggesting a software firewall program for each of the computers on the network? Not a problem if that is your advice I was just thinking that with the router firewall I would not need to do that. But maybe it would be best since I have three teenagers who all use the network and who knows what they are installing on the computers. They hear about a good game or app from their friends and just install the thing before I can determine whether it is problematic or not. I really do not use this network as I use the network at my office for all my needs. If I had a fire wall on each computer would that protect my wife's computer from the kid's foolishness? OK I said one more question and then I just snuck another one in there. :wav: Again thank for the assistance and the advice on updating - I printed them out for the kids. Regarding the computers everything seems to be running smoothly... I'll let you know if I run into anything else.

If you have hardware firewall then software option is not necessary. Also, if you'd like to install software firewall then it must be set so that in-house network is monitored in same way as traffic coming from outer network. Support forums for correspondent firewall product assist with configurations if needed.
