Help please! Hi-jacked browser?

When I do a Google search and click on the link that I need I get re-directed to another website that has absolutely nothing to do with what I was looking for. Then, I go back to Google and click on it again and this time it goes where I want.

It happens with all searches. First it goes where I don't want then it goes where I do want it. This is both when I click on the link directly or open in new window.

I looked in the task manager but I don't know what processes should or should not be running. I've also cleared my cookies, history, etc.

I have run NAV, Ad-Aware, and Spybot (the Spybot scan took over 6 hours), BitDefender, and could find nothing.

I am running a Dell Inspiron 1150, Intel Celeron 2.6ghz with 512mb RAM, MS XP SP2.

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers,

Bob

Hope I got it right this time!

hi

yep you got it right, thanks for posting it

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan, and check the following items(if there):

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{57707814-7453-49E0-A7DD-2A8B5FE35C77}: NameServer = 85.255.116.148,85.255.112.219
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{9B85B356-506A-4626-A22A-8BD90DF41E49}: NameServer = 85.255.116.148,85.255.112.219

If you see a new item that wasnt in your last log in your O4 lines in hijackthis, starting with dm... for example:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dm***.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dm***.exe (the *** stand for random letters)
or starting with hg***.exe for example:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hg***.exe] C:\Windows\System32\hg***.exe
or starting with cs***.exe for example:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cscyd.exe] cscyd.exe
Check it as well. If your not sure, leave it and only check the ones I asked you to check
===========================================================
Click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed.

Finally, please post the contents of report.txt (it should open), along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
If You have connection problems or those 017's ~ O17 - HKLM~ 85.255.116.148,85.255.112.219, return =>
Before doing this write down all the settings, Note that not all system/setups even have these settings, while some connection service's will require them.
In the windows control panel: If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be available one some systems

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmetr.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmetr.exe

enable showing of hidden and system files: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmetr.exe

reboot normally

Please download ewido anti malware it is a free version of the program.

  6. You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.

  2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.

  4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

then launch ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

That line has changed...

When I did another scan it changed to:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmegn.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmegn.exe

From:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmetr.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmetr.exe

Should I still delete it? Is it possible for the file to regenerate itself under another name to avoid detection?

Cheers,

Bob

yep delete it ( and fix its entry with hjt )
Is it possible for the file to regenerate itself under another name to avoid detection?

that is just what the b*****d does

edit: by chance did you save the ewido report, could you post it ( you can edit out the cookie detections to make it shorter )

hi

hi

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:

Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked, click > scan then > next

You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Backlight log

01/28/06 12:03:58 [Info]: BlackLight Engine 1.0.30 initialized

I see a trend here...

...my browser isn't letting me into any secure (https) sights, such as:

Banking
Secure checkout for online shopping
and more.

download killbox:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip
unzip it to a file on your desktop

reboot to safe mode

open killbox, tick the option standard file kill

then copy paste this line into the field full path of file to delete
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmfat.exe

NOTE: check your hjt log for a possible name change, you'll notice it always starts with dm

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dm***.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dm***.exe (the *** stand for random letters)
check the file name before inputting it to killbox

once its there pasted click on the button that looks like a stop sign
then fix the dm***.exe entry in hjt

reboot back to normal mode
scan for a new hjt log and post it here

Okay...here's the latest!

The line no longer appears in the log. I also ticked the box that said to kill the file upon bootup (Pending File Rename Op)

Did I do good?
