Help with a rootkit infection

Run the same command except put this in.

netsh winsock reset

If that does not work then download this program to another computer, transfer it by disk to the infected one and run it.
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

As far as Firefox, open Taskmanager , CTRL ALT DEL keys and under the Applications tab , if Firefox is running , click on End Process. Close it out, reboot and see if Firefox works

Lets do a system restore, if the infected files come back we will just have to deal with them.

Click Start, >All Programs, >Accessories, > System Tools, and then click System Restore.

On the Welcome screen, click Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.

On the Select a Restore Point page, select the date from the calendar that shows the point you'd like to restore to.

Pick a point just prior to running TFC

No good, ran system restore twice to a day before TFC on January 13 and at January 8 and I even ran Gmer and Rootrepeal both show no problems. I'm just confused and a little despondent.

This is real confusing as all TFC is is a cleaner to remove temp files that clog down your system, it does not remove any critical system files or the like.

Post here at our sister site and see if they can get you up and running, like Safer its free buy you will need to register.

http://forums.whatthetech.com/Browsers_Internet_email_f123.html

After they get you up and running post back here and lets take a look and make sure all the infection is gone.

Whoa weird solution! I did the full uninstall of the main firefox program and accessories and through the portable version did a clean reinstall of firefox and it works. I'm back online!

Go ahead and run RootRepeal again and post the log.

Then run this program, it wont fix anything, it just scans your system and gives me a report.

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Looks like its ok.

Lets update your Java to make your system more secure

Go to your Control Panel and click on the Java Icon ( looks like a little coffee cup ) click on About and you should have Version 6 Update 18, if not proceed with the instructions.

Download the latest version Here save it, do not install it yet.

How are things running now ?

Great, sorry for the TFC snafu. The tool was written by one of our own malware fighters OldTimer and its a wonderful tool, I am not sure if that caused the issue or if it was something on your system, anyway I have been in contact with him and we are looking into it.

Malwarebytes <-- Yours to keep also, check for updates and run a scan now and then.

Combofix <---Is not a general cleaning tool, just run it with supervision or you can bork your system

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • CF_Cleanup.png

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 3 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
