Hijacked Homepage.

Hello there,

For a couple of days, I have had some problems with my computer's homepage being reset to SafetyDefender.com. Also, periodically, a message will pop up saying:

Urgent System Message: Virus! Your computer is infected with last version of internet trojan (iwork_attck_v122.02a). It is highly recommended that you install antivirus software. Click the icon for more information.

The icon is a blinking yellow caution sign in the toolbar.

I have tried running McAfee AntiSpyware, and each time it displays various cookies and a trojan called Puper.dll. Once McAfee says it has been removed, I restart my computer, and the same problem happens over and over. I have also tried Norton Antivirus and Spybot: Search and Destroy, but neither program detects anything. I read somewhere that restarting my computer in SafeMode and then running an antispyware program might work, but when I tried that, McAfee AntiSpyware would not load.

I am not very computer savvy, but any information and help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! :)
 
Sounds like it may be the Smitfraud trojan, I will know more once you complete these instructions.

Before we start, you posted at 17:18, I posted at: 17:25 with instructions for you to complete. You posted your HJT log at 17:42 with no Spybot running in it which was part of the instructions. If I am going to volunteer my time to help you, I want to know you are serious enough to follow the directions.

You are running MSConfig in Selective Startup mode, I need to see all HJT logs from this point on in Normal Mode in MSConfig unless I reguest overwise.

Hello there,

My apologies for not following the instructions clearly. I was in a hurry to get to class, and I must admit I didn't read everything thoroughly. Now, after going through all of the directions, I am unsure as to whether I did everything correctly. One of the problems I am having is installing the updating Java software. I keep getting an error message saying something along the lines of the installer being idle.

OK, I understand, but I advise you in the future not to attempt computer repairs if you are hurried. It looks like the Smitfraud fix worked ok. There is some stuff that needs to be removed with HJT and we will see what is up with the Java program.

1) Help me out here, I see Symantec/Norton and McAfee? If you are running two antivirus programs at the same time, this is a bad thing, see this information:

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(the next two are corrupt and not working rith with the missising file. If you use them, download them again once you are clean)

Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

JAVA: I don't see it at all in the new log. This may cause some of your programs not to display correctly. You may have removed the old versions but not downloaded the new? I suggest you look back through the instructions here:

Updating Java:
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
It should have next icon next to it: coffee cup
Select it and click Remove.
Then Download and install the newest version from here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Post a new HJT log when you complete these instructions. If all is well at that point, I wll have some closing information you need.

Well, my computer doesn't have two anti-virus programs running at the same time. My antivirus program is Norton Internet 2005, and my antispyware program is McAfee. McAfee doesn't have the capability of working as an antivirus program, and the Norton Internet 2005 doesn't seem to have the antispyware capabilities.

Also, I'm not sure what is going on with the Java software. I deleted the old software as the instructions said, but when I went to the website and clicked on the Manual Download, it would save to my computer, but when I double-clicked on it to install, it shows the hourglass cursor and then doesn't proceed from there.

That's a 10-4 on the McAfee/Symantec issue, I thought that might be the case since I saw this: c:\progra~1\mcafee\mcafee antispyware\massrv.exe but there were a lot of other programs by McAfee also, so I thought it best to be sure.

I am sorry you are having these Java issue, I want you to know that many infections are getting in via script through Java and it was very important that you update. Here is what I am seeing in the new log:

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Updating Java and Clearing Cache
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:

After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
Downloaded Applets

Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
