My system is an Hp pavillion. Since I've had it I've it when the alert comes up saying there are new updates available from HP, I just close it and don't recieve them. Is that not good?

I don't usually use it Windows XP by HP. The update might prove positive and beneficial to your OS. But it depends on what the updates are, and what they update.

As drragostea said, it depends on what the updates are.
You might be able to skip a driver update, take a look at the description and search for more information to see if it is necessary.
However if the update is to patch a vunerability it deserves serious consideration.
Check to see if any update has caused problems before you download and install. HP has forums and faqs.

) it may improve driver or the system performance and stability. Security updates and driver updates are both updates, but two different things. Can you give some examples of the updates that HP has offered you? :cowboy:

I get them fairly often for my printer, yet a majority of them check my current software and give me a message stating that the update/fix isn't needed.
It can't hurt to let the updater check your system, since there may well be an update for the HP hardware that isn't addressed by MS, etc.. It could be something as simple as updating code so the HP hardware behaves better with your graphics card, to them coming up with a fix for the NIC hardware that someone found a way to exploit.
Better to let the updater run and decide you don't need the update than to cancel it and possibly leave your system vulnerable.

Hp usually has a small yellow pop up box which says it has updates. I have never updated in over a year, (system is 1 year old). Is there a site I can go to to let Hp go ahead and update all that they feel is necessary? If so should I wait til after all malware problems are resolved? Well if a rogue program/malware infects your computer you may be receiving pop-ups like "Your computer is infected with a virus. Your files and documents are in danger. Download this tool to remove them".
Well of course, that sounds suspicious. Well it depends on what message is saying. And what malware problems are you experiencing? Have you created a thread in the Malware Forums?

My system shows virtumonde every time spybot is run. Even if I don't go on line there are new issues. Thank you for the HP link. Should I wait to update from HP and Windows til after I get system cleaned. I am going to post for help in malware section soon. It's just that I am computer illiterate and it's taking me a long time trying to get the things they ask for before posting.

Nah. You shouldn't think that way. Everyone starts from a beginning. They don't just start from point A to point Z that quickly. It takes time. I learn new things everyday on this forum.
Now back to the topic. You're computer is infected by Virtuemonde as you said. Have you been experiencing pop-ups? From how I see it, Virtuemonde may be persistent to remove... even on remove file on reboot. I would strongly suggest you post a log in the Malware forums.

Consider posting in the Malware Removal forum and having someone take a look at your system.
If you decide to have an experienced malware removal specialist assist you, please follow the procedure in this link to run scans and produce a HijackThis log:-----
You should (and I would recommend) to install all the updates AFTER you clean up your system. The updates might actually corrupt and do harm instead while your computer is still compromised by Virtuemonde. Trust me it's experience. My aunt was infected tje SmitFraud and Virtuemonde. I installed a graphics card update and the computer began running on 8-bit colors. Had to undo the whole update with System Restore.
