Hi, like many others I am suffering from unwanted pop ups while browsing the internet. I installed & ran S&D which found many problems. The pop ups did not go away so I ran Kaspersky as instructed on your 'Before you post' screen. The results of kaspersky are as follows: -

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe

This is important , do this and post a new Hijackthis log
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe<-- Right click on Hijackthis.exe ( looks like a man with a spyglass ) and rename it to davtin.exe

  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi, thanks for your prompt reply. I followed your instructions and the details are as follows: -

Hello,

The reason I had you rename HJT is because there is a trojan called Vundo that causes pop ups, this trojan was written to go undetected by HJT and by renaming it , if the trojan is present it will then show up on your log.... AND IT DID NOT:bigthumb:

C:\Program Files\RealVNC <-- Are you aware this program is installed ??

The only thing I see out of the ordinary is this program.
C:\Program Files\SpyBro Most sites are flagging it as a rouge program. You might try uninstalling it via the Add Remove programs in the Control Panel.

You need to disable the Tea Timer in Spybot Search and Destroy or it may prevent the fixes from taking.

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer for it to take effect.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpyBrowser] "C:\Program Files\SpyBro\SpyBro.exe" /autostart

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

See if that helped, if not we can dig further.

Ken

ie pops

Dear Ken

Thank you so much for your second reply. Firstly may I apologies for the delay in writing back to you. I leave very early for work each morning and do not get chance to reply until I return home around 19:00hrs UK time. Anyway, I followed your instructions, but I still seem to be getting a pop up window behind my IE window. Since installing S&D, the pops tend to be windows with nothing inside, the are completely blank. Nevertheless, they are very annoying and I am sure my system is running very slow as a result. I have 8MB broadband but it sometimes feels like I'm stil on dial-up! Anyway, I would be very grateful if you could advise me further.
Best regards, David.

Sorry forgot to mention before, i am aware of realVNC, this is installed so I can dial into my office PC.
Best regards, David.

Hello,

No apologies needed :p: Lets run this tool and see what it finds.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Hi Ken,

When I run combofix.exe I get an error message saying 'it is not a valid win32 application' ?

Hope you can help.
B.Rgds, David.

B.Rgds, David.

Good Morning,

Combofix removed some bad entires, but lets run a couple of other programs and see what they come up with.

Please download F-Secure Blacklight (fsbl.exe) and save to your C:\ drive.
  • Open a command window by going to Start > Run and typing: cmd
  • Copy/paste or type the following in the command window: C:\fsbl.exe /expert
  • Hit "Enter" to start the program and then close the cmd box.
  • Accept the user agreement and click "Next".
  • Click "Scan".
  • After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit".
  • BlackLight will create a log in C:\ drive named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan).
  • The log will have a list of all items found. Do not choose to rename any yet!
I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present...like "wbemtest.exe" and "tcptest.exe.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Note: If Blacklight does not work, rename fsbl.exe to zsbl.exe and try running it again.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware Free to your desktop.

  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <-- Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system <--Don't forget this
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important, I need to see that log.
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware Free

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:

Hi Ken
I followed everything very carefully as instructed, the blacklight log is detailed below. However, on the AVG despite selecting 'Automatically generate report after every scan' and un-selecting 'only if threats were found' when the scan finished and I selected 'Reports' icon the right half of the screen displayed the message 'No Reports Available'. Just one other point to mention under bullet point 3 AVG there was no 'Update now' link, so I just went straight to 'Start update' button. Anyway here is the Blacklight log: -

01/09/08 19:44:10 [Info]: BlackLight Engine 1.0.67 initialized

Hope to hear from you again soon.
Kind regards, David.

Blacklight checks for Rootkits and hidden files and it did not find any, after running AVG, has your problem been resolved or are you still getting pop ups ???

Hi Ken

I've been web browsing for the last hour. I just got one pop up on a site which is set to allow them. But it was only a small window (albeit blank again) unlike the previous pop ups which were full screen and hide behind the main window. Also I always knew when the previous pop ups were about to appear as a small window flashed just for a split second in the top left corner of the screen. This has not happen and I think I can safely say my PC seems to be running much faster again. Do you think everything is OK again now? Also do I need to remove any of the programs we installed?
Many many thanks for all your help, it really is greatly appreciated.
Best regards, David.

Glad things are better for you :bigthumb:

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • CF_Cleanup.png

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

You can delete Blacklight.
AVG is yours to keep

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0.0.6 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.

Glad we could help

Safe Surfn

Hi Ken

Ran the 'ComboFix /u' didn't get the disclaimer 2 mind? Anyhow, I'll download some of the other software titles you mention.

firefox

Hi Ken,

Sorry, its me again! Wondered if you could help? I downloaded firefox as suggested, but everytime I open the browser two tabs try to open, the front on opens up weblog and the second says 404: page not found. The homepage is set to google.co.uk/firefox. It seems to have slowed down a little as well. I wonder if I not have too much spyware protection loaded?

Hope you can help.....again?
David.

Try going to the page that you want to make your homepage and open that site, then go to Tools > Options> Use Current Page and then ok your way out.

Then go to Tools > Clear Private Data, check it all and let it clean it out.

Here is a Firefox Tutorial, you can read it and it will give you tips on how to set it up
http://www.newbie.org/firefox/

Try running this cleaner to clean out all your temp files and Temporary Internet Files and it will also clear the cache.

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Hope this helps
