As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) Comodo (Uncheck during installation "Install COMODO Antivirus (Recommended)"!, "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage")
2) Online Armor
3) PC Tools
4) Sunbelt/Kerio
5) ZoneAlarm (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTC.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
    Secunia Software Inspector
    F-secure Health Check
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes''Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Concerns

Ok. I've downloaded a new Firewall, so Im good there. The only thing is it keeps blocking pages that I want to see. It also (on sites I always visit) keeps me from seeing pictures. Only had it a few hrs and its beginning to be a pain. I also completed OTCleanIt.

Now, my concern is System Restore. I understand what its for, but i was concened when the warning box popped up and told me that if i turn it off stuff will be deleted and I cannot recover it. What exactly is it going to delete or keep me from recoving? I have the concern because years ago we had a problem w/my mother-in-laws computer. We used system restore to get back to a previous date (before the date of the incident) and it erased everything! We lost programs, music, pictures. The whole ball of wax. As I recall, the computer was like it was when she bought it. So I am afraid of that, I dont mess w/that feature cause I know what it can do. So please advise me on this before I move forward.

Also, in looking over thigs in the HJT list I found files that I no longer use. What do I do w/them or is there anything I can do? For example: I found Siebel, WSLive, Workingsolutions and one that said echostar or similar. Trend Micro is still there (Housecall, which I dont use because it takes too long access to even run a scan) and Security.symantic.com (which I dont know what thats for). The first four I used while working for Working Solutions. I no longer work for them, so how do I get rid of their stuff?

Thanks for the help its greatly appreciated!!!!:thanks:

Which one you downloaded?

It will erase all restore points but the most recent. It should be done to remove all malware from system restore. While system restore is a good feature, when encountering serious problems restoring from backup (drive image) might be more sensible idea.

Please list those entries for me next :)

HJT Entries of Concern

I downloaded Sunbelt Personal Firewall.

When I ran the F-Secure it said Anti spyware -SpyBot was Off, so I told it to fix it and I guess it did. It did tell me my Antivirus program needed to be updated. The only problem is that I got Spyware Doctor and my subscription to the other programs has ran out. I purchase the AnitVirus and it is still active, but I cannot get an update to it due to the subscription running out on the others. Otherwise, all was good.

HJT Entries I was concerned with...

O1 - Hosts: 63.241.224.150 scan.wslive.com
O1 - Hosts: 63.241.206.136 wslive.com
O16 - DPF: {04E214E5-63AF-4236-83C6-A7ADCBF9BD02} (HouseCall Control) - http://housecall60.trendmicro.com/housecall/xscan60.cab

O16 - DPF: {68CDB19A-6305-4589-8C35-41E3502CD451} (Siebel Option Pack for IE 7.5.3) - http://dishsmart-test.echostar.com/Administration/16279/applets/SiebelOptionPack.cab
O16 - DPF: {E06E2E99-0AA1-11D4-ABA6-0060082AA75C} (GpcContainer Class) - https://workingsol.webex.com/client/T23L/webex/ieatgpc.cab

Other than this it seems to be going well. I did have some issues w/reading winpatrol. It was taking too long to pull up the page and when I shut it down and I got back into my browser Yahoo asked if I wanted to restore my session and I said Yes and the Winpatrol came back up. My computer did get a bit slow while trying to get a new IE to come up and 4 at one time came up. Dont know what up w/that but maybe that was me.

So otherwise if you think everything is good just let me know what I should do (if anything) w/the above entries and I will go from there. Happy Holidays!!!

OK, then you might want to try another firewall if problem persists.

"When I ran the F-Secure it said Anti spyware -SpyBot was Off, so I told it to fix it and I guess it did. It did tell me my Antivirus program needed to be updated. So is Spyware Doctor subscription inactive?

"HJT Entries I was concerned with..."

Yes you can fix all those if you like to :)

Spyware subscription

I guess so. My hubby won the program thru a work related function and that's how we got the program. It only allowed for a 1 year sub and now its ran out. But during that 1 year I paid money for the Antivirus part of Spyware Doctor, so its still active. I just dont know if its updated.

In looking over Spyware Doctor it says that the version is current, last scan was 3 hrs ago, last update was 99 days ago, subscription expired and Antivirus Engine is ON. In History it states it started a scan at 2am this morning and finished at 2:14am and it found infections. Says there are 86. They are application tracking cookies, adware advertising and Spyware.known_Bad_Sites (2 infections). It states is a low threat and is a spyware prog that represents a security risk for my computer. Intelliguard still runs, but of course if it finds something I cannot remove it or do anything since its expired. It just takes me to their web site to buy a new sub.

Also, thru out the year it has Quarantined some items. Does that mean its removed them from my computer? Can I delete those in the list? Alot are the bad ones like virtumunde, etc. Theres alot there.

Thanks!!!

Report

It doesnt actually produce a report like the HJT logs, but I was able to send something to a file and its posted here. When I opened the file it looked like it does below...I had to delete all but 11/25/09 as the file was too long to post.

Well those are tracking cookies and are no threats. They come due to incorrect browser settings.

Subscription is inactive so it is useless if you don't renew it. Are you willing to do it or do I suggest some free antiviruses instead?

Suggestions

Right now I cannot afford to renew it, so suggest some free ones and I will try one of those until I can get Spyware doctor renewed.

Thanks for your help!

Then please see these:

Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic - Free anti-virus software for Windows. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

You should run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and results in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Assist w/Forum

Tashi suggested I link you to a topic I posted today. Please read and assist w/a tech site that might be able to help. I just thought that someone might be able to touch light on some of the things i put there. They didnt seem too hard for someone who is Tech savy, just me. :thud:
