Ok i think i'm up to date with everything so far, just re-set msconfig to "normal start up" so gotta do a re-start, back soon :)

Anything you need me to do just let me know.

Lewis, Thanks.

You must read this tutorial carefully so you know what files to rename. Some of the files are may be valid:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial124.html

It is important to note that rootkits can hide legitimate processes and files. For example the rootkit in the screen above is hiding Explorer.EXE and Winlogon.exe which are both legitimate Microsoft Windows files and processes. So when selecting the files you would like to rename please make sure you are only renaming the malware files as renaming the wrong files can cause problems with your Windows installation.

Now look carefully at the results of the last BlackLight scan. From here I can see the hidden files that are BAD

07/31/06 22:25:32 [Info]: Hidden process: C:\windows\system32\tcvpzw.exe
07/31/06 22:26:34 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\TCVPZW.EXE-2A6AA833.pf
07/31/06 22:26:45 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\system32\tcvpzw.dat
07/31/06 22:26:46 [Info]: Hidden file: C:\windows\system32\tcvpzw.exe
07/31/06 22:26:46 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\system32\tcvpzw_nav.dat
07/31/06 22:26:46 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\system32\tcvpzw_navps.dat

You will be running BlackLight again, when you get to this point, then follow the proceedure to rename the bad hidden items and continue to the end of the instructions.

Then I would like you to run ATF-Cleaner:
Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Update and run Spybot, remove everything it locates.

then update and run AVG by Grisoft, remove everything it locates.

Let me know if those programs locate anything they can not delete

Run the computer looking for issues, post a new HJT log and let me know how it goes.

Thanks...Phil

I'm confused as where to find the renamed files!!

Lewis

Post a new HJT log, I am also interested in any issues that are occuring now that you have killed the rootkit infection.

Thanks

Ok here is the HJT log.

Thanks for that information, let's do this:

1) Make sure all hidden files and folders are still enabled to see.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tcvpzw] c:\windows\system32\tcvpzw.exe tcvpzw

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

c:\windows\system32\tcvpzw.exe <<< delete that file. If you have any problems with it, delete it in safe mode.

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Post a new HJT log and let me have some feedback.

Thanks

Hi

Ran ad-aware first, system clean....
Ran spybot, MCA present (Fixed problem)....
Ran spybot 2nd time, MCA dead :bigthumb: ......
Ran AVG, System clean....

Re-started comp

Ran spybot 3rd time, MCA still dead :bigthumb: :bigthumb: :bigthumb: ....
Ran AVG, System clean....

Been surfing the net, Internet is faster AND no pop-ups, not even 1 of them.

The words "thank you" are an insult to your time and help....
Here are some better suited words....

Superman, Diamond geezzer, Top notch fella, Wonderful, amazing, you are a star..... :bigthumb: :D: :D:

But if you like I can do you just a modest Thank You.....

Thank you again for your time and help...

I'll continue using the net for a day as normal and I'll post back up here tomorrow to put a final conclusion on the thread (Just to make sure of no relapses)

Thank you,

Lewis

PSKELLY = :crowned:

Sounds good Lewis, I feel secure that we got it:bigthumb: Thanks much to the help of LonnyRJones where it came to using BlackLight to feret out the rootkit. Let me give you some very important information to help you stay safe and clean:

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html
http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml

If you wish, ask search companion to look for this: tcvpzw.exe and if any instance is located, delete it.

(clean out that quarantine folder, I suggest you keep this one. Once the trial is over, disabled it uses just a little disk space until you need it. Updates and the scanner are free)
ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

(do this right away in case junk is lurking in System Restore looking for a chance to reinfect you if you need to use it for a valid reason)
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

Safe surfing...tashi:) will close your topic in a few days.

Thanks...pskelley
