Malware attack (worried about consequences)

I am able to save in the aforementioned location without any problem.

Also if I start firefox using the "run as administrator" option I am able to download files to the C: drive.

Hi,

It's Vista's User Access Control (UAC) that makes it act like that. To use system more securely I recommend to keep UAC enabled. If program needs admin rights then "run as administrator" function works.

Could you now follow those earlier instructions in post #10 (excluding ComboFix related part)?

Hi,

Are you able to use "run as administrator" option if you right click the downloaded installer?

Hi,

Are there any other user accounts using the machine than the one you've run the fixes with?

Hi,

Please disable UAC by following instructions here. Then see if you're able to follow those steps I gave in post #10 (again, excluding ComboFix steps).

Hi Blade,

I was able to uninstall, install, and update all of the software you had mentioned in the earlier post; after disabling UAC. My system has been running better since running combofix, with no outward signs of any problems. I'm still concerned/confused about the effects of UAC and its disabling on normal computer usage.

Anyway, here are the problems found when I ran ESET's scanner:

Hi,

Delete manually those ESET findings. Do you recall if you have used UAC disabled before all these issues begin to appear?

I'm having trouble actually finding the ESET problem files/applications. I'll follow the file path, but then the file will be missing, or the folder in which it is in will be missing.

I can say that I never recalled having to run programs as an administrator to download or install to my hardrive. In any case the only usable user account is password protected and has administrator privileges, so I should not have to select the "run as administrator option" even if UAC is enabled, correct?

Hi,

Show hidden files
-----------------
1. Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.
2. Click the View tab.
3. Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

See if you're able to see those ESET findings after those steps.

Could you create a new user account with administrator rights and have UAC enabled for it? Then see how things behave under it (test copying to c: drive etc).

Hi Blade, sorry about the delay again, non-computing obligations came up in a big way.

Anyway, I enabled the "Show hidden files and folders" setting, and was able to locate many of the ESET findings, and have deleted them. However, there are still some that I can't locate. I could not locate the following problem files under their listed folders:
C:\Alamgir Old Computer\WINDOWS\AppPatch\3pmc.tmp Win32/Adware.Virtumonde.NEO application
C:\Alamgir Old Computer\WINDOWS\system32\dmcdvd.ini Win32/Adware.Virtumonde.NEO application
C:\Alamgir Old Computer\WINDOWS\system32\dmcdvd.ini2 Win32/Adware.Virtumonde.NEO application
C:\Alamgir Old Computer\WINDOWS\system32\dmcdvd.tmp Win32/Adware.Virtumonde.NEO application

In addition, I was unable to delete any of the last problem files under the folder "All Users" as that folder appears to be missing.

I'm going to now create that new account and see how things work in it.

I just created a test account with administrator privileges. Unfortunately, it appears to experience the same problem as the initial administrator account when run with UAC enabled. I need to run my browser as an administrator in order to download files to the C drive. Should I remove this account now, or should I leave it open for further testing purposes?

Also, just something I forgot to mention before, but every time I start up a ERUNT window pops up saying it was unable to create a backup, and error messages come up right after. What should I do about this?

Hi,

You may uninstall ERUNT and remove that test account. You have to keep UAC disabled if you want to store other than your profile folders under system drive (C: in your case).

Run ESET scanner again to see what items are still found.

Hi Blade,

These are the remaining problems found by running ESET, pretty much just the one's that I couldn't find for manual deletion:

C:\Alamgir Old Computer\WINDOWS\AppPatch\3pmc.tmp Win32/Adware.Virtumonde.NEO application
C:\Alamgir Old Computer\WINDOWS\system32\dmcdvd.ini Win32/Adware.Virtumonde.NEO application
C:\Alamgir Old Computer\WINDOWS\system32\dmcdvd.ini2 Win32/Adware.Virtumonde.NEO application
C:\Alamgir Old Computer\WINDOWS\system32\dmcdvd.tmp Win32/Adware.Virtumonde.NEO application

Hi again,

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Code:
File::
C:\Alamgir Old Computer\WINDOWS\AppPatch\3pmc.tmp
C:\Alamgir Old Computer\WINDOWS\system32\dmcdvd.ini
C:\Alamgir Old Computer\WINDOWS\system32\dmcdvd.ini2
C:\Alamgir Old Computer\WINDOWS\system32\dmcdvd.tmp

Save this as

Close all browser windows and refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe (let combofix update itself).
Then post the resultant log + fresh dds logs. Any issues?

Hi, sorry about the lengthy delay.

The computer is running very well now, as well as I ever remember it having run. Here are the requested logs:

==== End Of File ===========================

Good, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

Get Adobe Reader 10.0.1 update here.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

A To disable the System Restore feature:

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Hover over the Computer option, right click on it and then click Properties.
3. On the left hand side, click Advanced Settings.
4. If asked to permit the action, click on Allow.
5. Click on the System Protection tab.
6. Uncheck any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.
7. Press OK.

B. Reboot.

C Turn ON System Restore.
Follow the steps like you did when disabling system restore but on step 6. check any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

  • Download and run Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) and fix its findings.
  • Get Anti Virus Software and keep it updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. Good free antivirus programs are:
    Antivir
    Avast!
    Good commercial ones are from:
    Kaspersky and
    ESET

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade
