Malware (Spyware Guard 2008 + others)

Hello,
My laptop is currently infected with Malware/Spyware. I got infected last night; about 20 IE windows popped up at once and my system slowed down to a crawl. Ad-aware failed to remove everything, and Spybot S&D fails to start (though the resident will run and block some processes).

I did a search and found another post with a similar problem (Link), but Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware refuses to start as well.

Can someone help? I managed to stop Spyware Guard 2009 from starting by opening the exe in notepad and blanking it out; fooling whatever keeps reinstalling it into thinking it's still there, but obviously this is not an optimal solution.

I originally posted here, but after searching realized I should probably be posting here instead).

Ok since everyone seems to be doing this, I've posted HijackThis log.

Hi DarkWolff

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic - Free anti-virus software for Windows. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

You should run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and results in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

After that, rename HijackThis.exe to DarkWolff.exe and post back a fresh HijackThis log, please :)

I'm having problems getting on the internet on the infected laptop (I'm on another atm). I can't seem to view most webpages. I'll keep trying.

If you are able to use another computer during entire cleaning process, you can keep infected computer offline and transfer logs/tools via usb stick or similar :)

Here's the log.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn''t interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you''re clean again:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Ok, I unloaded TeaTimer from the taskmanager. I tried to run ComboFix, but the same thing that happens to Spybot S&D happens to it; it doesn't run. If I leave the process window from the task manager open, it show combofix.exe for a split second before it unloads.

Then delete your copy of combofix first.

After that:

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks. ComboFix is running now. I'll post a scan when it's done.

Note: ComboFix couldn't download the Windows Recovery Tool. Is this ok?

Yes as infection prevents it.

I will give instructions for that after first combofix run.

Ok it's all down. I noticed the fake Windows Security Center is gone now. Spybot will run now, but I didn't do a scan yet so these logs will be accurate.

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:

See this link how to install recovery console manually:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Re-run combofix and post back a fresh combofix log, please.

Ok ComboFix managed to install the recovery console, and it's scanning now. I'll post the log when finished.

BTW, The computer's performance has increased dramatically and we're not even done. Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it.
