MicroBillSys in Windows Messenger Live

I have a persistent infection with MicroBillSys and would appreciate some advice on whether it is a high risk infection and help to remove it if it is.
When it first occurred about a month ago, I thought it was an intruder so I added a General Firewall rule in Norton Anti-virus which successfully blocks the access and prevents the pop-up billing screen. But then when I looked at “Norton Anti-virus>Reports & Statistics>View Activity Log>Activities”, I discovered that Windows Messenger Live seemed to be initiating the in-coming communication attempt. Typical log entries are:
“An instance of c:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe is preparing to access the internet”
followed immediately by:
“Rule "Firewall Rule MBS" blocked communication.
Process is c:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe”

(Occasionally, it's \\MSN Messenger\livecall.exe that starts the sequence)

Even after running SpyBot which found and removed 8 infected files, MicroBillSys is still activating every time we start Windows Messenger Live. Further scans are clean.
Thinking (erroneously I now know) that Spybot forums were user share and self help, I followed other threads on the forum and ran Brute Force Remover also to no effect.
I can stop it activating by Uninstalling Messenger, but if I download MSN again from Microsoft and re-install, it's back, even if I save the download to CD and install from there.

Can anyone advise whether it's safe to leave things like this (with MSN installed and the Firewall rule in place) or will MicroBillSys start to cause havoc the longer it's left? If it’s a high risk, any ideas where it's hiding and how to clear it?

Attached is the HijackThis log. I also ran Kaspersky on-line but it did not find anything. I cannot upload the log as the text is too long in total and I've had to delete it.

Welcome to the forum. You are having this problem because you did not read the (EULA) End Users License Agreement when entering certain sites.

This is the only known fix and can't guarantee it will work.

Disclaimer: These instructions should NOT be used if you willingly installed the software, and agreed to its terms.

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C: ) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download MicroBill Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon
    foldericon.png
    and select mbs.bfu
  • Press Execute and let it do it's job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
Reboot your computer and check if it worked.

No joy with BFU

Hi Ken – welcome to the problem, it’s good to see the cavalry have arrived.

I’ve carried out the BFU process to the letter with Windows Live Messenger re-installed, but the problem is still there. I don’t think this is the legit billing system, but something more sinister. Firstly, my partner and I are senior citizens and have not visited the types of sites you mention. It is possible that a guest did, but I have checked IE History and there is no record of the site that is being billed for being visited. The only other possibility is a music File Sharing site that I visited, but backed out of when asked to download some software.

This is what I did today:
9.19 AM Logged on in Normal mode
9.35 Completed BFU process
9.36 Re-booted and logged on into my partner’s account (she is the one who uses Windows Live Messenger)
9.37 Windows Live Messenger Log-in screen opened. I did not log-in.
9.38 Checked Norton activity log, which reported that my MicroBillsys Firewall Rule had prevented access at 09.37.54, in a process initiated by \MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.exe
09.41 Switched user and logged into my account. MSN log-in window opened although I am not a registered user. Checked Norton log again, no further activity from MicroBillSys.

As I initially reported the problem goes away if I Uninstall Windows Live Messenger. Do you think there's a way I could completely wipe MSN from the registry and then install a clean version or is this a red herring? (I'm not sure I'd want to go charging about in the registry, anyway)

Unfortunately, someone who used your computer may have accessed a bad site. The only recourse that I know of is to pay them and then cancel the service. As disturbing as it may be, what there doing is legal.

Thanks Ken - I guess we're reaching the end of this thread. I'm not inclined to pay for something I've never had, and in any case from other threads I've read, the problem never goes away even if you pay them. I initially tried to contact them but there is no phone or other response. I have read that there is a counterfeit billing screen that imitates the legit MicroBillSys.
In your opinion, is it dangerous to leave things as they are, ie with the added General Firewall Rule in place - at least I don't see the irritating pop-up. Has it been known to go on and do other things to the system? (I'd appreciate your advice and accept the risk is still mine if I do nothing).

Its hard to say, maybe just uninstall Live Messenger and use another program. Keep it blocked with your firewall. This is fairly new and not sure if it will go away or get worse. Lets hope a complete format and clean install of windows is not needed. You may find more info on this problem on one of the forums I have mentioned.

smvalid.exe is not present in System32

I loaded the output from hijackthis back up to their system and did a quick analysis. Two files were flagged as "Possibly Nasty":
\system32\ScsiAccess.EXE which "normally runs in
\photodex\proshowgold\ "

and
Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NAVW32.exe which "normally runs in
programme\norton internet security\norton antivirus\ "

I am suspicious of the first as I don't recognise photodex, could I safely delete it and see what happens?

What alternative is there to Windows Live Messenger and would it communicate by video call with contacts who use Live Messenger?

  • Open HJT
  • Then open the Misc Tools section
  • click on Generate a Startup List Log,

I've spent all day on this and followed up various sites - there is definitely a fraud going on here in the UK with numerous incidents similar to mine, press reports and investigations by the police. I found a reference on one site to sexxpassport and remembered that Norton blocked this virus some time in July, just before we went on vacation on the 21st. I checked System32 and found 3 files installed on the 20th which are on a list of MBS files I found on another site. I've deleted them from Safe Mode log-in and re-booted but it's still there. Doh!

Download and Save the Trial of Blacklight to your desktop.
  • Download the Blacklight Beta graphical user interface version
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Then accept the agreement
  • Click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"


Then run this program that may show a startup item that is hidden

Download Silent Runners to your desktop.
  1. Run it, and post back here with the log it creates.
  2. If your AV queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious.
  3. It will create a file named Startup Programs, and will notify when the scan is complete.
  4. Copy the log from the Startup Programs file back in this thread.

The 3rd item under 'Start up items buried in registry' refers to MSN and seems to be suspicious. I noticed on one of the other scans we ran that this appeared as well as a regular listing for MSN. Do you think it means anything?

Still see no instance related to your problem. You may want to uninstall Windows Messenger Live and maybe use AOL IM or the one from Yahoo. Like I said, this just appeared not to long ago and is touted as legal. I know you are debating this but someone who used your computer went into a dubious site, thats why you are having this issue.

From what I have read, your problem may only get worse. If it was me, I know this sounds drastic but I would do a format and a clean install of windows.

Hi Ken, thanks again for all your help.
As you say, I am disputing that the billed site was accessed and now that I know the dates that the files were loaded I know it could not have been a guest at our house as that was two weeks earlier. I'm certainly sufficiently confident that this is a scam that I'm not giving my credit card details to them. If they're genuine, how come they don't have my e-mail, phone or address? The attached newspaper article seems to support my position that innocent people are being hit by this.

My Firewall Rule is blocking the pop-up so there's no real disruption at the moment and as we've removed all the MBS files, I don't see how it can replicate or start to do anything else, but to be on the safe side I'll follow your recommendations and uninstall MSN.

When someone entered the dubious website, there was a 3 day trial, you had 3 days to cancel. No credit card was needed, when whoever accepted the trial, it just copied your IP address installed the software.

Success - problem solved

I accept something came in from somewhere but it is not legit. If it is, why do Norton, SpyMoMore and Spybot all have MBS files in their directories? Anyway, thanks again for trying even while you don't believe me.

As I reported, the infection was active in my partner's Windows Live Messenger as soon as she logged into Windows, but not in mine.
The solution was to create a new Windows account for her in which MSN is clean and delete the old one. Of course, by this time I had found and deleted all the rogue files, otherwise I guess they could have re-infected MSN.
Adding the Firewall Rule to Norton was also very useful in blocking the pop-up in the first place - my only concern was what data it could be sending out.
