Did you want me to reboot and then do HJT?

Callie :)

Starting now, it won't be finished before I need to leave for work, so will post when I get home. You're the best, Shaba :).

Do you think there's less risk of chaos since that buzus thing was really ircbot too?

Fingers and toes crossed!

Callie

Hi

"Do you think there's less risk of chaos since that buzus thing was really ircbot too?"

Not really but it's good to know what it really is :)

I'll be waiting for results.

New scan :)

What do you think?

Callie

Hi

Looks good :)

Empty this folder:

C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles

Empty Recycle Bin.

Still problems?

ARGH.

Deleted the requested stuff, cleared the bin. Went back to working on the computer ... modem disconnects, network icon remains in tray ... try to redial, it says I have no modem (it's done this other times recently). I reboot ... guess what's back? dbsarticles.com. I don't have the teatimer running because we disabled it to run the cleaner.

Going to run KScan and HJT, will post results.

The only websites I accessed since the last Kscan are this one, google, work sites, and the website of one of our local towns. I can't imagine this is new, it's got to be hiding somewhere. The dbsarticles.com stopped trying to hijack the browser after the first step we did, after the SDFix. Now, it's back.

Callie

It's baaaack ...

Okay, so I started running the kscan, and the modem dropped and did it's strange "I have no modem" thing. I have the log up until it died. I then could not get to this or the safer networking page at all, it kept timing out. I re-enabled teatimer, ran spybot, had it "clean" the smitfraud-c generic ... then rebooted and was able to access this page. Here are the last few spybot logs:

3/5/2008 8:54:47 PM Allowed (based on authenticode whitelist) value "SpybotSD TeaTimer" (new data: "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe") added in System Startup user entry!
3/5/2008 8:55:01 PM Denied (based on user decision) value "Windows Networking Monitoring" (new data: "C:\WINDOWS\System32\mdm.exe") added in System Startup global entry!
3/5/2008 8:55:01 PM Denied (based on user blacklist) value "Start Page" (new data: "http://www.dbsarticles.com") changed in Browser page!
3/5/2008 9:15:03 PM Denied (based on user blacklist) value "Start Page" (new data: "http://dbsarticles.com") changed in Browser page!
3/5/2008 9:52:00 PM Denied (based on user decision) value "Windows Networking Monitoring" (new data: "C:\WINDOWS\System32\mdm.exe") added in System Startup global entry!

Here is the kscan log, I'm going to try and run another scan now, hopefully it will complete.

This bug has to be hiding somewhere we're not seeing for it to come back after a clean scan. :(

Callie

Hi

Yes, there must be a downloader somewhere.

Does McAfee have a firewall or is at least windows own firewall on?

First re-run sdfix in safe mode.

After that:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Post:

- a fresh HijackThis log
- sdfix report
- Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log

Morning Shaba :)

Okay ... here's an interesting note, I ran another kscan last night. I came back to it and the box was up that I had been disconnected from internet ... but the scan was still running. It lied. I went to sleep, the scan completed. Odd.

#1 ... disabled Teatimer again so it wouldn't interfere.
#2 ... ran sdfix in safe mode

How we doing?

Callie

Hi

Hopefully better :)

  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    Code:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mdm.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\a.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\CQWT930D\mixit[1].exe
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste Custom List Of Files/Patterns To Move" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Install one of the firewalls from below:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) Comodo
2) Online Armor
3) Sunbelt/Kerio
4) Agnitum
5) ZoneAlarm (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Forgot to answer the firewall question ...

How do I figure out if I have a firewall running? I don't think McAfee has one in this program, I think it's just a scanner.

Any preference on the firewall? I clicked on the first one in the list, Comodo ... how do I know if I've got 32 or 64? The 32 says SP2 which I don't have yet. I'll get that after things are all clean ... which will take me 4 days to download. I hate dial up :(

Hi

Comodo won't work, that's true as you don't have SP2.

However, the rest in my list should work.

"The 32 says SP2 which I don't have yet. I'll get that after things are all clean ... which will take me 4 days to download. I hate dial up :("

You can also order SP2 CD from Microsoft, see here

Downloading zonealarm now, just chose the basic option, I don't know what trialpay is. Not sure how long it will be since it didn't give a file size. Once it's downloaded, do you want me to run any scans? I probably won't be done by the time I have to leave for work.

Thanks,
Callie

Hi

Yes, please re-scan with kaspersky and post back its log and a fresh HijackThis log :)

I slept through this morning ... maybe you could help me with a cold or flu removal? lol
