Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

A To disable the System Restore feature:

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Hover over the Computer option, right click on it and then click Properties.
3. On the left hand side, click Advanced Settings.
4. If asked to permit the action, click on Allow.
5. Click on the System Protection tab.
6. Uncheck any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.
7. Press OK.

B. Reboot.

C Turn ON System Restore.
Follow the steps like you did when disabling system restore but on step 6. check any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTMoveIt2 and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the
    Begin cleanup Process?
    prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

  • Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
    kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
You can download SpywareBlaster here here
    SpywareBlaster tutorial
  • Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
    bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here
    Download it here
  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    1. [*]Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) [*]Click run [*]In the dialog box, type services.msc [*]hit enter, then locate dns client [*]Highlight it, then double-click it. [*]On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. [*]Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Hey, when I was going through the first step, I double clicked the ResetTeaTimer and it popped up a command prompt that said "unsupported version" "press any key to exit ... press any key to continue..." Is this what is supposed to happen or how do I make sure that the file did its job?
As for Spybot, after I changed the settings a registry change dialog box came up that requested permission for a registry change of ehtray.exe the new file location would be C:\Windows\ehome\ehTray.exe. For the time being I denied that change. How do I address these two issues?

After I made that post I realized that there were close to 30 changes about system startup with values being added and deleted about a variety of things some I recognized some I didnt, ranging from Winlogon to HP stuff among others. I just allowed all the changes - should I now scan using one of the programs you had me download for any bad files that may be present?

Hi

I have a bad feeling that TeaTimer brought all the fixed hjt entries back. Please post a fresh hjt log so we'll see if it did.

I keep getting messages now that those changes have happened saying that a host process for windows is missing or cannot run properly and needs to close. I also get occasional windows telling me windows problem reporting has stopped working as well.

Is there a way to undo some of the registry changes so that I can get these windows processes working again?

Hi

Have you tried rebooting after that to see do those errors still appear? If they do what are the exact error messages? That might help here.

Blade, I have restarted a couple of times to no avail. All programs: word, mozilla etc have an old/classic visual look to them the rounded vista settings seem not to be applied. I tried copying and pasting from an online site to word and it froze had to close and restart. I don't know what exactly is missing but some driver/vista visual thing must have been taken out. Is there a way that I can restore the erased registry entries?
As far as the messages, there were a couple this morning but I closed them before I read your reply, I'll post the messages next time they appear.

Here is one of the messages: Microsoft Help and Support has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

I just did a system restore to get back the settings. here is a fresh log you can check to make sure I didn't bring back the viruses. Now i'll continue with the final steps you posted to me. However, what am I to say when I enable the resident tea timer and spybot wants to make the numerous registry changes I posted earlier?

Hi

I think you should uninstall Spybot and reinstall when you've carried out the final steps. That way we'll avoid TeaTimer's questions :)

That was scary at first... I uninstalled spybot, it said to restart. Upon the restart windows wouldnt load/couldnt startup. My computer had to find an old system restore and try to go back to that point and re-find windows. I dont know how uninstalling spybot would do that. Anyway it is gone now and I'm proceeding with the final steps.

When I go to remove combofix, I should preface by saying i moved it from my desktop to a folder where I keep programs, anyway I clicked on combofix and it said it was an expired copy and then the link just disappeared. I did a search in my computer to find there are still combofix files on my C drive, however Start Run 'Combofix /u' in my computer couldnt find anything by the name "Combofix". That said, should I manually delete the combofix files from my C drive. I presume the goal is to eliminate the bad files it has quarantined, right?

Hi

ComboFix alteres also time settings and that's why it's recommended to uninstall it properly and not just remove Qoobox folder. What is the exact location of ComboFix.exe now? The command I gave you works only if the file is on the desktop.

I did an advanced search on my computer and cant find it. Combofix removed its link since the copy was expired. There is a file called "Exe" within the combofix folder of the C drive specifically that path would be computer/C/Combofix/Exe (that isnt proper format, but shows the progression of folders). that file type is "registration entries"

Hi

Well, if the clock appears to be in correct format then I believe it's safe to just delete c:\qoobox and c:\combofix folders (if found). :)

When I worked on the cleanup tool, the computer froze on restart- again windows applications were not loading/working. none of the wireless/avira icons appeard in the toolbar that usually do. Anyway, I did a hard shutdown and all works fine now. I installed the first recommended program: spyblaster but am aprehensive about how much the host file one will slow down my computer. Based on your experience does the host file one have a noticeable effect in games, internet, or just general performance?

As for updates, doesnt windows automatically download updates? If not, I don't know where to look on the windows up date page to get the necessary updates. If you could send me a link specifically for vista that I should go to to get the updates, that would be great.

Thanks very much in advance.
