My computer is running a bit unstable

Ran SystemLook twice with the following results both times:

SystemLook 30.07.11 by jpshortstuff

========== filefind ==========

Searching for " svchost.exe"
No files found.

Scan ran very quickly. I don't think it ran five minutes. Probably should have timed it the second time but thought issue may have been the fact that I ran it within a folder that I created.

I received these two popups when running scannow:

"Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache. Insert your Windows XP CD Rom Now." I chosed "canceI" since I do not have the CD Rom.

"If you cancel Windows might require you to insert a CD later. Are you sure you want to skip this file? Chose "yes" scan continued."

What good is this scan if you don't have the CD? Asked for Windows Disk more than 150 times, (approximately), but I did not stop scan. I told it basically just to skip the file. I don't think it is a really great tool. No information at the end. At least when I run scandisk at boot it gives me more info at the end of scan. I have run scannow before, probably a couple of years ago, so I wasn't surprised with the requests. If you think that it helps, then fair enough.

:)

BTW, its a three year system bought directly from IBM, completely refurbished. It is likely that IBM put in a new hard drive. Battery is starting to show some issues so..Sound was given me some issues but came back working fine the last month after a year or more. Couldn't tell you how or why because I tried everything for those sounds to work (including updating sound driver) in my admin account, but it wouldn't work. That caused more problems. Therefore, I reverted back to old driver. Music worked fine in any account. I use Window's sounds for program openings and closings for security reasons.

You actually can run System File Checker with no windows CD if you have this folder C:\I386 But I think at this point that since your saying things are running fairly normal that I would just leave things be

Sounds like your covering all your bases

Ken,

Why is it that I don't have that file? My system came with a restore partition but no disk. Was the SystemLook search for svchost ok? I wanted to make sure that I didn't have a root-kit that was causing the instability. I will look for a replacement for Window's firewall. If there are no other things to do then I guess it is time to start the process of ending the process. I know that I have to uninstall Combofix. What are the other things that I need to do?

You need to enable windows to Show all Files and Folders
Instructions for your Operating System HERE

Lets check for it manually
svchost.exe <--Your DDS log shows it in the windows/system32 folder, then check your windows folder, it should not be there

Sorry, I wasn't wearing my reading glasses. I thought you wrote "1386" rather than "I386" However, I am more familiar with "i386." In any case it is not on my machine. Going forward, I will know to make that clear to anyone that is helping me in the future. This is important because most OEMs do not include the disk.

:rotfl:

Made the necessary registry changes, ran Scannow without any popups but still nothing that states that everything was fine. Quite frankly, I do not understand it but...

The i386 folder may or may not be present, it depends how Windows was installed, its a backup folder that contains all critical system files. I am not on my computer at the moment , I am away but will be back later on this evening, there is a way to check to see what SFC did but dont have my notes with me

Bee back soon

Thanks Ken,

The i386 folder was present. Sorry. I found it after I posted that it was NOT present but before I ran Scannow a second time (actually third time-2 times 1st event and one time 2nd evnet). I looked up on the web how to redirect it i.e. what registry changes were necessary. There were not any pop-ups and it ran through the whole scan without asking for the XP CD. Consequently, I guess I completed the proper changes.

Thanks for the update, your patience, and your help.

:)

The command for seeing what it did was for Win 7, wont work on XP but as long as you didnt get any notification of things being changed is a good thing

How are things running now ?

Fair enough, system seems to be working with a little more pep. I was on today in limited user account and didn't notice the wuaclt issue. We will see. I'm happy to know that this system looks to be clean. I had my doubts. This is the first time that I've had the unit checked in 3 yrs. Old girl has been through heck. If I hadn't cracked the plastic on her, I would likely keep her for the long-term as my main squeeze but...

Well, I believe it is time to bring this to a close. Let's start that process.

:bigthumb:

Great, glad things are back to normal for you

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.

    CF-Uninstall.png

Open OTL and click on Clean Up and it will remove programs we used to clean your system along with there backups, any programs that where not removed you can just drag to the trash.

Malwarebytes is the free version and yours to keep and will not be removed

Safe Surfn

Cool.

Thanks again for your time and help Ken.

It is always good to learn new things about my system and Windows. I'm amazed that there were not more serious issues. We purposely have used the unit to test the security software we have on it by going to websites that we know are dirty: both literally and figuratively ;).

Best 2 U & Yours.
