A. 1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\28.tmp
C:\27.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\imsins.BAK

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

CFScript.gif

6. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix then post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Are you currently using both AVG Anti-Virus and Norton Anti-Virus as active anti-virus programs?

Hello Rip:
Before I ran ComboFix, I turned off AVG, but am unaware of any other monitoring programs running. As far as the Norton is concerned, I thought it was disabled. I cannot remove it through "Add/Remove" programs under the Control Panel and I cannot even run the program. When I try to open the program from the Start menu, it will not even open. It is completely frustrating because I know I cannot run both Norton and AVG and I prefer the AVG.
Any suggestions?
Here are the two logs you requested. Thank you once again for all your help. I cannot express my appreciation enough!!

Hello marycartwright,

Here's a link to a program that will forcibly uninstall all norton products from your computer: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt & save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
  • Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
  • Back at the main window, click "Select drives" (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen)
  • Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
  • When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
(This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
  • Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

drweb log

Hi Rip:
Thanks for your quick response :) and also the help with the removal of Norton. However, that now poses a new problem. I think I need a firewall. Any suggestions?

I will be away for the better part of the weekend, but will return on Sunday evening. (Just letting you know in advance why I'm not posting).

I wasn't sure if I should delete those files that are now saved in the quarantine folder, but you can let me know about that in your next post.
Have a good weekend and here is the log:

Hello marycartwright,

I think I need a firewall. Any suggestions?
ZoneAlarm is a pretty good firewall, I would give it a try and see how it works out for you.

I wasn't sure if I should delete those files that are now saved in the quarantine folder
Go ahead and remove them when you get the chance :)

Please post back with a fresh HJT log, and an update on how your computer is running :D:

HJT Log

Hi Rip:
Thank you for your advice and help. I deleted the items in the Dr Web quarantine file (there were 56 items!) and have attached an updated HijackThis log. The computer seems to be running better, but I only visit this site, so it's difficult to say. I do notice that things are not as slow as they were and I am not getting any strange messages or alerts as I did before I began here.
Thanks so much for all your time and patience with me. I truly appreciate all you are doing to help.

Ok, here is the new HijackThis log:

Hello marycartwright,

Let's do one last scan to make sure everything is gone, then we can move on to the final cleanmup steps :)

Download AVG Anti-Spyware v7.5 and save it to your Desktop <- (Important! Vista Users should install from that same location).
(This is Ewdio 4.0 renamed and updated with a special "clean driver" for removing persistent malware.)
  • After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
  • Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
  • Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
  • Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
  • After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
  • Connect to the Internet, go back to AVG Anti-Spyware, select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update successful" message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually download and update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer.
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.
(Note: When run in safe mode, sometimes the GUI is larger than the screen and the buttons at the bottom are partly or completely hidden, making them unaccessible for doing a scan. If this is the case, press the WINKEY + M key or Alt + Spacebar to "Minimize" the AVG display. Then right-click on AVG in the Task Bar and select "Maximize". If that does not help, then you may have to run your scan in normal mode and advise your helper afterwards.)

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:
  • Click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?", "Possibly unwanted software", and What to Scan?" leave all the default settings.
  • Under "Reports" select "Do not automatically generate reports".
  • Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
  • Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
  • When the scan has finished, it should automatically be set to Quarantine--if not click on Recommended Action and set it there.
  • You will also be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.
IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the :Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button.
  • Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you performed, select "Save report as" and save to your desktop. The default file name will be in date/time format: Report-Scan-200706-1606. A copy of each report will be saved in C:\Documents and Settings\<user profile>\Application Data\Grisoft\AVG Antispyware 7.5\Reports.
    • If you installed AVG AS over a previous version, reports are saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
    • If you are a Vista user, reports are saved in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Grisoft\AVG Antispyware 7.5\Reports\
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and post the log report in your next response.
Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. Doing so can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

AVG Anti-Spyware is free for 30 days and all the extensions of the full version will be activated. After the 30 day trial, active protection extensions will be deactivated and the program will turn into a feature-limited freeware version that you can continue to use as an on-demand scanner or you may purchase a license to use the full version.

AVG scan

Good Morning Rip :)
I really thought we were almost there. However, there were alot of infected files (almost 80) found during this scan. The computer was running almost normally before this last step, but it seems somewhat slower after reboot. (Could EASILY be my imagination and paranoia) ;)

Here is the log:

Hello marycartwright,

Most of what that last scan found were tracking cookies which are of no harm, and a lot of system restore files which can only be cleaned by a scanner, or at the end of the log by resetting the system restore points.

The reason your computer may be loading a little slower, is because of all of the extra protection programs currently installed right now.

Please post back with a new HJT log, and an update of how your computer is currently running.

HJT Log

Hi Rip:
The computer seems to be really slow to get moving, once turned on. However, I notice alot of things are loading from the start-up such as the Verizon Update screen and the MSN messenger service. These I can live without and will address them at later date. Once I finally get online, it's pretty quick though. Seems to be better. I did NOT delete the infected files that AVG Anti Spyware found. They were quarantined, but I wasn't sure if I should have deleted them from where they are, and am not quite sure of where that might be.
Here is the most current HJT log...fingers crossed ;)

Hello marycartwright,

However, I notice alot of things are loading from the start-up such as the Verizon Update screen and the MSN messenger service. These I can live without and will address them at later date.
Or we can take care of them now :)

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /background
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SFP] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Verizon Online\SFP\vzSFPWin.EXE /s
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

I did NOT delete the infected files that AVG Anti Spyware found. They were quarantined, but I wasn't sure if I should have deleted them from where they are, and am not quite sure of where that might be.
You can keep them quarantined, when/if you uninstall AVG Anti Spyware it will prompt you to delete them anyway.

Go ahead and delete the following folder now:

C:\Qoobox

Go ahead and remove any tools we used during your fix now, as they will no longer be needed.

Congratulations, your computer is now clean of malware!

Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "OK".
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  1. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  2. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources
  3. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  4. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls
  5. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  6. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
  7. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

Thank you!!

Hello Rip:
First let me say that I thank you very MUCH for all your help and patience with my fix. I cannot express my gratitude enough.
I have to say you are awesome!!!
My computer is running so much better and I am very happy.
I completed all the tasks you advised for the final clean up, updated my Internet Explorer settings and removed all of the tools we used during the fix, EXCEPT for HiJackThis. Should I remove this as well?
Also, I have the following protection programs running all the time:
Zone Alarm Firewall
Spybot Search and Destroy
Windows Defender
AVG Free Edition - Anti Spyware
AVG Free Edition - Anti Virus
I also have Windows Update set for automatic updates, but know to check frequently anyway.
Also, I am going to download and install the SpywareBlaster program tonight.
Besides these programs, is there anything further you suggest? I will check out the other programs you suggested (IE/Spyad; MVPS Hosts; Google Toolbar and Winpatrol)

Again, I thank you SO MUCH for all your help and am eternally grateful. It is a selfless and invaluable service you provide and if there is anything I can do to show my appreciation, please let me know.
Mary
