Need advice..or Anger Management referral

Hi.....
I have a couple of questions....about anti virus software....registry changes...

I've gone through the forums and found the antivirus programs that seem to be be the most recommended...
but not much on which program uses the least amount of resources...
My laptop is currently serving as my home computer...I've been looking for an external hard drive in order to free up some space...but I want a 'big mamma' of a hard drive and until I can afford one, I'm stuck with what I have...I was using Avast as my on access scanner...but it causes my system to hang constantly...not to mention the amount of
time it takes just to boot...hence the referral for anger management....It takes forever to do anything....so much so that I mostly want to A. Scream and pull my hair out :hair:....or B. just chuck it out the window...:banghead:
If Avast is not running it does run a tad better....so
what can I use in conjunction with Spybot that will still protect me but not kill my system????

Also....
How can I find out which invalid registry items can be deleted? I didn't really want to tinker with the registry too much until I could learn more about what and what not to do

I apologize if there is a post somewhere with this information...I only went through a few of them.

I am also going to post a log in the malware help forum because I'm pretty sure I've got some nasty buggers hiding somewhere that's also helping bog down my system...
I'll post the link to that post if needed.

Thank you so much for your time and any help you could give me....

Hello Trickz. Assuming from your post, Avast! Anti-virus is hanging when it attempts to complete a scan correct? Then I would suggest you uninstall the program and install AVG 7.5 Free Edition. I have had AVG as a line of defense against viruses and trojans in the past and it has not failed me now. I would recommend running only one AV at a time for that it will cause conflicts. Spybot-SD has been in my anti-malware "arsenal" for several years. Although it does not complete a full system scan, it is flexible and scans for specific and common malware/spyware. The immunize function proves to be much useful as it restricts spyware infested sites from attacking your PC. SpywareBlaster would also be my recommended product as it not only restricts adware and spyware on a higher degree, but it also includes flexible custom controls to IE and blocking.
CCleaner can help you clean the "gutter" and "refuse" from your notebook, as it cleans away obsolete temp. files, cache, cookies (tracking ones too), and other privacy files. Not only does CCleaner clean that, it repairs registry problems on your PC (which you were looking for) and gives you a comprehensive detail about the stuff you clean. It also offers a add/remove program, but on a different level compared to the default in WinXp. Cheers.

Hi everyone,

CCleaner can help you clean the "gutter" and "refuse" from your notebook, as it cleans away obsolete temp. files, cache, cookies (tracking ones too), and other privacy files. Not only does CCleaner clean that, it repairs registry problems on your PC (which you were looking for) and gives you a comprehensive detail about the stuff you clean. It also offers a add/remove program, but on a different level compared to the default in WinXp.

CCleaner is a good program but it can be a bit too powerful at times.

I don't recommend using the registry repair option, unless one is very familiar with the Registry, having seen many problems caused by people hitting that fix button.

Also, if anyone is going to post in the malware removal forum, one should not use CCleaner during the cleaning process unless requested by the helper assisting. The program can remove items they need to see in the scans used for analysis.

Cheers. :)

Hi tashi. Yikes. I'd never knew CCleaner would be THAT powerful. Yet, I want to ask you what are the "items" that said the previous post about later analysis? But to be honest, I run CCleaner on a regular basis only to clean out my cache and temp. in Mozilla and IE. In addition, tashi, can you tell me more about the registry cleaner in CCleaner. I would like to know more about it, well, more like the goods and bads. Thanks.

No need to apologize it's all about sharing information.

I am glad you brought it up.
