to remove sdfix and combofix you can get another download which will remove it all for you:

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt3.exe

* Save it to your desktop.
* Please double-click the OTMoveIt3.exe icon on your desktop.

in the main window click the CleanUp! button, requires a internet connection to get the latest list. at the prompt to reboot select yes.

keep malwarebytes and keep it updated. the paid version has real time protection and auto-updates.

two things you can do are check your java version and make a new restore point.

java:

Vulnerabilities in versions of Sun Java may be responsible for some malware installs via your browser.

It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.
* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

to check if you have the latest version of Java and to download the latest version:

system restore:

One of the features of Windows ME,XP and Vista is the System Restore option, however if malware infects a computer it is possible that the malware could be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is a good idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot

my "speech:"

My Top Ten List to Avoiding Malware
The Short Version:

1) Keep your OS, (Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and other software up to date to "patch" vulnerabilities that could possibly be exploited.
2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come bundled with unwanted add-ons. Read the EULA before the software installs.
3) Install and keep them all updated: one antivirus and two or three anti-malware applications. If not updated they will soon be worthless.
4) Refrain from clicking on links or installing files you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message may seem. Are you sure of the source that sent them?
5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites requesting that you install software to your computer. Do you trust the website?
6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer.
7) Set up and use limited accounts for everyday use, rather than administrator accounts.
8) Install and understand the limitations of a third party software firewall.
9) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client.
10) If your habits include visiting or downloading/installing files from: warez, cracks or p2p (file sharing) networks: then you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source?

I did the HJT and deleted the files as I was told to do, I did the system restore. checked the box, apply, reboot, then unchecked box, apply, my internet was not working so I did a reboot. thats where it started:

As I turned on my PC it will not get passed
Detecting IDE Drivers......

Ithought it would restore to the last good start up which was today??

I can not get to my desktop.....

What did I do wrong???

Help!!!
Thanks
Debbie

Oh my.....
I guess I thought it was crashed. I tryed again this morning and left my pc alone and it all came back on. It was just so slow when I turned on the PC. And I didnt see the recovery system, was that because doing the system restore?
Why do you think that happened?
What do I do next?

Debbie

hi,

OHHHH NO I killed my pc......
What did I do wrong???
you didnt do anything wrong.
removing tools and doing a system restore is standard stuff to do after removing malware. i have no explanation for why it hung up, it dosnt have anything to do with what we did.
you didnt see the recovery console as a option during the boot up?
the system restore was to delete all the possibly infected restore points. as you use your computer it will make new restore points along the way, dosnt have anything to do with the boot-up process.

hi,

lets get another copy of combofix and run it again. like last time except no need to install the MS recovery console, also this time before running combofix please disable your antivirus, spybot and cyber defender, a right click, and exit on the icon by the clock should do it.

Download combofix from one of these links and save it to your Desktop:

http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

Ok here we go here is the Combofix:

hi,

thanks for the info. i think those last items malwarebytes found are just registry leftovers that it removed. that last combofix log and the hjt log look ok to me.

this item checked in msconfg: Viewpoint Manager
it can be removed via the add/remove programs panel.

if all is good you can remove combofix like this;

go to start>run and type in;
combofix /u
click ok
note: there is a space after the x and before the /

happy safe surfing out there

And I thought it was all good?
Debbie

hi,

i think we did get rid of those. maybe they are registry leftovers we can delete with hjt. first take a look here:

C:\Program Files
and look for these 3 folders:

Twain
GetPack
GetModule

if you see them-- delete each one of the folders

next:
disable spybots tea timer so it wont interfere with the changes. how:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

also disable/exit cyberdefender from the system tray,
just in case.

next use hjt:

start HJT, click the "Scan" button. check the items below, close any open windows, then click "Fixed checked"

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [GetModule23] "C:\Program Files\GetModule\GetModule23.exe"

reboot computer, re-enable tea timer, and cyberdefender (it will most likely restart upon reboot)

rescan and post a new hjt log

These last ones are tricky, still can not get them removed.
I did not find them in any folders, is there another way to look for them and delete them from my PC? What are registry values?

hi,

the registry is a windows directory which stores all the computers settings including hardware and software. normally leftovers are harmless. i see malwarebytes keeps finding them also

ok so you didnt see these three folders in C:program files?:
you disabled tea timer and cyberdefender before using htj

Program Files\Twain\Twain.exe
Program Files\GetPack\GetPack21.exe"
Program Files\GetModule\GetModule23.exe"

lets run combofix once more, if its been updated you will be asked if you want to update it before the scan starts. Get the update and continue with the scan. post the log please.

Ok here are the logs:

hi,

ok good. looks like that did the trick. you can check your java version:

Vulnerabilities in versions of Sun Java may be responsible for some malware installs via your browser.

It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.
* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

to check if you have the latest version of Java and to download the latest version:

http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

you can remove combofix like this:
start>run and type in combofix /u
click ok
note: there is a space after the x and before the /

if all is good- happy safe surfing out there.
