My nephew was recently caught downloading stuff he shouldn't have (and turning off some security measures to do so.) He has now been banned from the computer but I am left with an infected machine. S&D found 3 instances of virtumonde, so following instructions, I disconnected from the internet, and had it fix the problem. It hung up during the fix and completely locked up the computer so I ended up rebooting. The second time through it only found one instance which it fixed, then after rebooting again reported to me that the computer was clean.

I rebooted a third time just to be sure, and then connected back to the internet and it was immediately back. I repeated the entire process, with the same result. Once I reconnect to the internet I get constant pop-ups from S&D about a registry change that I have denied (and marked to remember so the popups are frequent enough to completely fill the right side of my screen.) It locks up too much for me to get to any site (so I have not been able to get to Kaspersky.)

I disconnected and ran the whole process again (I believe this is my 6th time through and this time it found 5 instances, which was quite alarming that it seems to be getting worse) and have left that computer disconnected after S&D reported it was clean. This computer that I am currently using is clean and I downloaded HiJackThis to upload onto my computer, however I am concerned about copying the text of the log and posting it on this computer, I'd hate to have this one infected as well.

When I am offline, I get regular messages about the page I am trying to view not being available offline, which is also a concern since I am not trying to view any pages (I am hoping that it is just one of my automatic updates trying to function.) When I exit the spybot program I see a bunch of command prompt windows open and close and I get about 10 registry change notices with entries like SpyBotdeleted.

My computer has actually been quite slow for some time and I had been thinking of reformating and doing fresh installs anyway, (the drive is about 85% full and a large majority of that is stuff I don't need.) I have an extra hard drive that I planned on installing (yes, I have done that several times before and do know how to go about it properly) and transfering all my photos, documents and some music (I have been converting my cassettes into mp3 files to put on CDs so they last longer - I'd hate to lose all that work.) Everything else I either have the original CDs or I purchased online and have legal keys. Would the virus end up on the new drive if I did that?

My other concern is that although I have a Norton anti-virus program that came with the computer, it is from 2003 and my subscription is unfortunately expired and my budget is not such that I can renew it (I had updates up through 2006.) I am concerned that I may lose the limited protection I do have.

Help will be greatly appreciated and I will gladly provide the HJT log once I am sure it will not infect this computer as well.

I almost got a headache from your post, so I stopped reading. You have many problems, and I can probably help, but it is going to take time and work. The junk will download more so stay offline except when you are troubleshooting here. As soon as I get more information I will advise you about removing Norton, and I have several free programs you can chose from. Our problem is that the malware may cause problems with trying to install new security programs at this time? You may want to consider doing a reformat and starting over, here is a little information to help you decide:

If you want to try to clean the computer, I will need you to start like this.

Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

I will need more information as we go but this will give us a start.

Yes, I can tell that my post was not fully read. I know I am long winded but I prefer to be understood.

I already have HiJackThis installed - but since that computer won't let me get online I certainly can't post with it and I absolutely do not wish to bring a file from that computer to this one until I know that it will not spread the infection, especially since this is not my computer.

I also mentioned that I already planned on reformatting my computer but I must know if transfering files such as my photos, documents, and music to a new hard drive will also spread the infection.
 
I understand your concerns and suggest you review the information I posted for answers to your questions. I remove a lot of Vundo infections like I assume you have. I will need to see the HJT log before I am even sure I can help.

Thank you for taking the time to help. I read through that information multiple times before I posted in the first place, also I've read it several times since, but I still don't see the answers to my questions. Yes, I saw that it said I could download HJT on a clean computer (which is what I had already done), but I am sill not at all comfortable transporting the log file from this computer onto that one.

I am currently posting this from the infected computer,with IE add-ons disabled and I had to set these forums as my homepage because I can't navigate anywhere.

Also, I am not sure if it is related but I am having a terrible time typing this because every couple keystrokes are not registering and I keep having to go back and type in all the missing letters to be legible.

Here is my HJT log, I will now rerun S&D to remove the 5 instances I have picked up again while posting this.

I understand you are uncomforable with the proceedure, but when you tell me:

and I see HJT in a location that is nothing like the instructions you read "multiple times" it makes me wonder. This creates a situation where I have to go through two steps just to get HJT safely located to store backups in case they are needed and adjust the HJT.exe so I can see the infection the hackers have learned to hide.

I am not uncomfortable with the procedure. I am uncomfortable with the fact that I have not been given a straight answer whether copying the logfiles to a clean computer would spread the infection and that I have been treated with rudeness from the start.

I understand that you are a volunteer but that does not make your attitude either acceptable or excusable, if you do not wish to help me then I would prefer to deal with someone who does.

I followed the instructions as they were written, namely:

4) HiJackThis log - Trend Micro HijackThis 2.0.2
Click here to download HJTInstall.exe
Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop. Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log (no attachments) into your (Click --> ) own new topic

I followed the link given, downloaded the zip file, extracted the exe file and placed it on my desktop. When I clicked the icon, it did not give me the option to install it anywhere it just opened the program. So I must assume that the file in the zip was the program exe and not an installer. Also please bear in mind that the clean computer on which I read the intructions (regardless of whether you believe me or not) is not in the same location as the infected one so though I am doing my best, I overlooked the fact that the file was not an installer.

I do not have any ability to navigate anywhere via links or bookmarks so it is not a simple matter of clicking over to read instructions again. The only reason I can get to this thread is because I have set it as my homepage, but it still is very costly to me in terms of time because it takes about an hour to run through the S&D removal process everytime I go online.

I have now manually created the folders you mentioned, and removed the version that was on the desktop and placed a new version in the folders. I do suggest that you make sure your instructions are correct and clear before you get upset with someone for not following them.

I apologize if you are not satisfied with my performance. I will be glad to close this topic and you can wait for another helper, or I will contine trying my best to clean your computer. I will leave that up to you. If you wish to continue...

Before we start:
Understand that HJT is not infected, it is the files it shows which are on your computer that are infected, not HJT.exe

There is no need for you to run Spybot S&D until the computer is clean and you are using it for routine maintenance.

I will do my best to make sure my instruction are clear, if I post an instruction that is not, please do not execute it until you have asked for and understand what is expected of you.

Thanks for locating HJT in a safe location, read and follow the directons carefully.

The instructions start now:

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

Unfortunately my computer has frozen completely while I was running combofix. I've left it for several hours but I think I will have to go through with the reformat.
