Can't do system restore

Hi, Windows doesn't seem to let me do the System Restore. I am prepared to just kill everything and reinstall Windows etc. if this is the easiest solution at the moment.

Sometimes a reformat and clean install is a good option but I hate to see you go through all that trouble. Microsoft offers free support for the installation of SP3, since they know more about it than I do I would give them a call and let them run you through it, they may refer you to chat to solve the issue. I am sure from what I have been reading that this has caused issues with other people also. This link contains a lot of info on it from the Microsoft site as well as the free phone number for support.

You can also post in one of these windows forums for help on this issue.

Let me know how it went. When your back to normal , post a new HJT log and lets see if anything has returned.

Uninstalled SP3, virtumonde has returned

Hi, thanks for all your help and patience. I ended up uninstalling SP3 and things seem to work much better (using advice from
How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 3 from your computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249

Now that the desktop and browsers are working, I updated Spybot and Malwarebytes and ran checks again.

After the checks, I put Resident back on and immediately numerous Registry requests pop-up. How does one know which ones to accept? I assume that in every day usage, it's not normal to receive these requests unless you've installed something.

==============================
While running checks, Symatec automatically came up with this message:

Trojan, Vundo
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ifovaqkd.dll
Clean and Quarantine failed.
Action taken: Clean failed: Quarantine failed: Delete succeeded: Access denied

===============================

Spybot found and removed Virtumonde.prx
(but it's probably still lurking somewhere)

Good Morning,

Although Spybot Search and Destroy is an excellent product I would leave the TeaTimer disabled permanently.

  • Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
  • If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
  • On the left hand side, Click on Tools
  • Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
  • Restart your computer.<--You need to do this for it to take effect

Glad you got that straightened out, I have read that a better option to install SP3 is to go to the Microsoft site directly and download it from there or even order the CD to install it.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FD-6F69-4289-8BD1-EB966BCDFB5E&displaylang=en

You have Norton Antivirus installed, this is the problem installing SP3

http://windowssecrets.com/2008/05/29/02-Norton-software-conflicts-with-Windows-XP-SP3

• To do this in Norton Internet Security 2008 and Norton AntiVirus 2008, uncheck Turn on protection for Norton products on the Options pages of these programs prior to installing XP SP3. Once the service pack is in place, return to the Options page and re-enable this setting.

You still have signs of the Vundo Trojan, remove these with HJT.

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    javaicon.jpg

    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 <--This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

Post a new HJT log and let me know how things are going

Hi, very good morning to you!

Thanks for the SP3 tips but I think I'll stay away from it for a bit!
JRE 6u7 is now installed.
The system seems to be running fine. Absolutely no strange things happening yet (now that Tea Timer has been disabled).

I hope I'm back on track. Many thanks.

Looks good, why don't you use your computer for a few days, I will keep this thread open for you and post a new HJT log in a couple of days and lets make sure nothing has returned.

Install Spyware Guard and Spyware Blaster, they won't be in your face like the TeaTimer, keep the TT disabled as it will conflict with these two programs

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 3 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Thanks for all the help. Hopefully I won't have anything to come back to you on. Will start loading up some of the software you've recommended. Best wishes, Michael :)

Virtumonde in user profile

Hi Ken, everything was working fine until I logged in under my own user profile and it seemed that Virtumonde was still lurking. I thought that everything would have been removed even under the user profiles.

1. Under my user profile when loading, a message pops up saying:

"Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\epouytit.dll
The specified module could not be found"

2. SpywareGuard warned me of:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {c00ef4e8-66ab-759d-3851-3ae06f85be78} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C4BA984D-B1C7-4E43-ABEC-B025759CE541} - (no file)

3. Under my user profile, I ran Malwarebytes and it found and removed Virtumonde and a few other files.

4. I returned to the Administrator profile and ran HJT. I again removed:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{1c764dca-dc0f-047d-a4d8-28e6b242e67c}] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\czsfxeddiwm.dll" DllStart G
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [2cff0d42] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\qecvybvp.dll",b

5. The system has always been working fast and fine. Below is the latest HJT as Administrator.

Thanks

Hi Michael,

I wasn't aware that you had different profiles, the infection itself is gone from your system, those where just leftover reg entries, but it appears there gone now. Your HJT log is fine. Do you have any other user profiles on this system?

Ken

Hi, in the past I lent my laptop to other people and they did create their own profiles but I haven't done this for a year or more. So the only profiles I use is 'Administrator' but I only use this for downloading software and my own profile. The computer is running fine. However, this just came up from Symatec:

Scan type: Auto-Protect Scan
Event: Threat Found!
Threat: Trojan.Vundo
File: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{46DE8921-1D39-44D2-A9E9-64119261F211}\RP6\A0008319.dll
Location: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{46DE8921-1D39-44D2-A9E9-64119261F211}\RP6
Action taken: Clean failed : Quarantine failed : Delete succeeded : Access denied

I assume "Delete succeeded" is a good thing?

Michael,

The entry Symantec found was in your Windows System Restore Program, you need to flush that all out, it was the second item I listed on HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE.

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

  • Right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your computer

Turn ON System Restore.

  • Right-click My Computer.
  • ClickProperties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Create a new Restore Point <-- Very Important

  • Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You need to go into the Control Panel and switch to Catagory View to be able to Create a New Restore Point
System Restore Tutorial <-- If you need it

Hi Ken, sorry, my bad. I will carefully read through and follow every tip that you have given me before coming back with any problems. Thanks!

I have now created a new Restore Point following your instructions.

Not a problem Michael, on my end, there is not enough hours in the day to read up on everything :) It is a lot to read for you, take your time and read through it and you will find some good tips and tools. Any questions, post back.
