Problems Resulting From Deletion of Malware

I am trying to help someone with some computer problems.
I ran an Avast virus scan and it detected some malware including a trojan horse and some
adware. I told the program to delete the malware and the computer has been malfunctioning since. Among other things I don't think that I am able to conect to the internet using that computer. I transferred the Spybot S&D program to it using a flash drive but I am not able to update Spybot S&D online and I am not sure how to manually update it. Would you please help me with this (since this involves one of the prelimary steps that you advised us to take)? Also instead of an online virus scan, can I use Avast?

An on-line anti virus scan is different from a resident AV.
