"Read Only" error - Tools.dll

While installing 1.6.2, I get an error message that says that the Tools.dll file is designated "Read Only" . It gives me the option to Retry or Abort. Retry does not work.

Any thoughts?

Hi dalorie,

Didn't you uninstall the old version first? I've heard from some problems if you don't.... You can try this:

Uninstall Spybot completely and reboot your computer. After that, download Spybot 1.6.2 from here and install it.

Hi--sorry--should've told you that. I did uninstall the old version fully, rebooted, and then re-installed. Still getting the same error.

did you disable Spybot's SDHelper and TeaTimer and reboot your computer before uninstalling? Moreover, did you try to install in safe mode? Which operating system do you use?

If you get the read only message again, click retry three or four times in a row... I've heard that this may help.

sorry, I've forgotten something important (Step # 2).

Step # 1: Uninstall Spybot
Go to
Sart > control center > software
and remove Spybot with the Add/Remove feature. Reboot your computer.

Step # 2: Check
Go to
Start > My Computer > C
and remove the whole folder Spybot-Search&Destroy.

Go to
Start > My Computer > C > your username > Application data
and remove the whole folder Spybot-Search&Destroy. Reboot your compuer.

You didn't do this, because the file tools.dll is located there. :p: ;)

Step # 3: Install Spybot
Download Spybot and install it. ;)

If you have still problems, please let me know. :)
