Hi,

Go back to recovery console.

At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

cd erdnt

6. At the next prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

dir

7. Note down folder names you see there and post them back here.

ok

Went in the recovery console

When It asked which windows installation you would like to log into, I choose "1" like before.

... and, If I remember my DOS,
There is a directory called;
3-29-2011
4-3-2011
cache
Hiv-backup
Subs

And a file called CFrecovery.bat.

... here is a picture of the screen

Hi,

In recovery console type the following command (answer yes to confirmation):
fixmbr

and then exit. See if you're able to get to Windows this time.

ok

did that, there was a warning about the hard drive, when I did fixmbr, it said a new something was written. I typed exit, it re-booted, and then I got the blue screen when I tried to start normally, then, re-boot and tried to start in safe mode.

What is next?

Hi,

Is it still exactly the same error message on that blue screen?

Hi,

Once again enter recovery console like you did before.

At c:\windows prompt type the following commands (press enter after each one):

1) set AllowAllPaths = true

2) cd\qoobox\quarantine\c

3) dir

Post a screenshot of list (or part of it) appearing like you did earlier.

ok

Here is a shot of the directory (Screen 2):

In case you need it here is the Dir of \\qoobox\quarantine\c\windows\
(screen 3)

Hi Mark,

I'll ask some opinions on this and return back with next instructions asap.

Thanks

To be honest, and to let you know the limit of my ability... I am stumped. I was thinking of pulling the hard drive from the computer and backing it up to an external drive (I have the equipment and experiance to do that), putting it back togeather and then giving it to a local shop to get fixed. I apprecate all of the help, but this is sliding down hill, and alot of my work and life is on that computer. I do not think I can live without the computer for a full week.

If you can find a way to make this work without me using a screwdriver that would be great. But if I to dump the hard drive, what are the chances that the virus/worm is in the data of the hard drive? (word/excel files, pictures,m music etc) what it the best way to clean that data before loading it on to a new computer or nuking this one and re-installing it?

Hi,

Those listed items should be ok to backup. Anyway, let's see if we can get the system back bootable (as said, I'll let you know asap).

Ok. We have something to try. For this you'll need Windows XP (with SP2 on it) installation cd + empty cd media and working system (I assume you have one handy since being able to post in this topic).

As your first step, please download a file here to safe location (e.g. to own folder on desktop of working system).

After that, please follow the tutorial here to build UBCD4win disk. Let me know when ready or if you have any questions.

ah

I am trying to follow these steps. I found the rescue CD for my computer, but I am having trouble building the Rescue CD with the download. I keep on getting errors, and problems with Admin privliges. Also since the computer with the problem is a Dell that need some special mods of the rescue program which took more time.

I am going to dust off my old XP laptop and try to build the CD on that one (instead of this one that is windows 7) ... hopefully that will work.

Nope.

I can not manage to copy the files correctly onto the XP laptop to create this disk. When I try to copy the start up disk, there are antivirus errors about coping a file, and then when I turn the anvivirus off, it claims that the file (that the anti-virus has trouble with) is unreadable and the copy fails.

Thanks for the help, but I am going to bring this in to the shop in my town and have them see what they can do.

I apprecate your efforts.

Hi,

Did you try to disable AV and then copy or was it already copying when you disabled the AV?
