:sad: Assistance with possible Virtumonde?

Hi MRU Helpers! My WinXP Home appears to be infected by Virtumonde/Virtumonde.dll.

Baseline info: WinXP Home SP2 with Norton Internet Security 2007 (missed Virtumonde),
Windows Firewall is off, as it is superceded by the NIS2007 software. I typically
use Firefox 2.0.0.14 with NoScript (script blocker) as my main browser, and avoided
IE7 as much as possible until today to use the Kaspersky Scanner.

Problems: Three days ago, Firefox started to have problems of random URL redirection,
or timeouts. The same bookmarked URLs worked without problems before, and still
work in Safari 3.1.1. Now that I'm running IE7 to use the Kaspersky scanner, I'm
finding that the random URL redirection is worse than ever. iTunes/QT streaming/
WMP11 and other Internet traffic appear unaffected.

So far: Norton AV2007 reported no problems. Using Safari, I found & ran Spybot152
which detected -> Virtumonde/Virtumonde.dll infection. Finally worked my way to
this forum to find LOTS of others with Virtumonde infection. Hope you are not too
sick of assisting people with this annoying malware/virus. :p:

*1* Unable to complete Kaspersky Scan:
I used IE7 to access the Kaspersky Online Antivirus Scanner. It bogged down after
about 45 minutes, and the process "lsass.exe" seemed to take over the CPU time. I
waited 5 hours, and the computer went into Sleep mode without completing the scan.
So I rebooted.

*2* Safemode - Spybot S&D Scan:
I ran Spybot S&D in Safemode. Virtumonde/Virtumonde.dll were detected. The scan
also highlited in RED 5 easily fixed tracking cookies from DoubleClick, etc. It also
flagged "Microsft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled", which is because I'm using NIS2007
in its place. I had Spybot S&D fixed all but the WSC item. Then ran spybot again as
suggested. However, on this second run, the computer seem to drag on during the scan.
Using Task Manager, I see that "lsass.exe" has again taken over 90% of CPU usage.
After 1 hour of no progress I rebooted and went back into SafeMode to scan again,
only Virtumonde.dll & the MS.WSC_disabled were flagged. I chose to fix only the
Virtumonde.dll, then cycled the power after the fix. Virtumonde.dll appears resistant
to the cleaning efforts. If I should fix the MS.WSC_disabled item, please let me know
and I'll do that before I follow your further instructions.

Started up Windows in normal fashion, lots of Command windows popping up during login.
Two RUNDLL errors remained after those command.exe windows went away, reporting that
neither "uwjvboww.dll" nor "obmuhpbb.dll' were not found in "C:\WINDOWS\system32\"

Thank you for your help! I'm using the browser Safari 3.1.1 to post this
as it appears not to be affected by the random URL redirections. Maybe
this info can help other people. :red:

Please let me know if I should fix the "Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled"
item in Spybot S&D as well before I follow your further instructions.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

This may not be important, but better to inform you of stupid things than to
miss telling you something significant.

The first link for ComboFix at subs gave me a "500 Internal Server Error"
The second link to bleepingcomputer.com for ComboFix works fine.

I started ComboFix, then went to read the guide/tutorial, stupidly in the
backward order. I saw the recommendation to install WinXP Recovery Console,
so I answered "No" to ComboFix's question "Do you agree..." -> NO. ComboFix
quit, and apparently erased itself and disappeared from my desktop. I hope
this is normal behavior.

Antiviral/Malware/Internet Security was disabled. Internet access disabled.

I installed WinXP Recovery Console via download from Microsoft and dropping it
on ComboFix as described in the ComboFix guide. ComboFix took about 20 minutes
to run, including a reboot. ComboFix log and follow-up HiJackThis log follow:

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

:cleaning: Turned off Internet, Turned off AntiViral/Malware/Firewall.
I had a problem with NIS2007's anti-phishing protection not turning back
on, but I guess I'll worry about that after getting rid of Virtumonde.

Ran HJT202. All three entries were present and fixed without errors. HJT
showed a blank listing after the very quick fix, so I closed the window.

Ran ComboFix with the script copied from your post, ComboFix log is below,
followed by the subsequent HTJ log after a reboot.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan. Check all the boxes and click Start Scan
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.

:cleaning: As per your instructions, I ran Anti-Malware w/ "Perform full Scan".
After about 2.5 hours, it reported 17 entries for removal. I'll also
attache a HJT log following the manual reboot, in case you need that.

In addition, I attached a registry change that Symantec support pages
directed me to apply to regain functionality of the anti-Phishing protection.

:eek: After a few minutes of using Firefox, I haven't seen any redirections and
have not experienced timeouts of bookmarked pages and google searches.

I'll let you know more when I have more time with it later today.

You are clean ! Few things to do


Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :

This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up

I have to say, I've been using computers for about 20 years now, and I've
NEVER had a bad case like this. I've been careful and probably seen a total
of 4 or 5 viruses over the years, easily cleared up with a few clicks. This
was the first time that It's been like this. You totally saved me!

Q: So, first what exactly did I get? Seems I got a Trojan Virtumonde,
that my antivirus missed. Was it re-infecting resulting in lsass.exe hoggin
my system? The Firefox tracking cookies I understand are just from all over
the web (DoubleClick, etc). Did I get the Trojan Vundo from a download also?
Was it two trojans I picked up or just one that was causing my problems?

Updated Windows XP:
windowsupdate.microsoft.com just updated the WGA license, nothing else.

Checked Internet Explorer 7:
The setting for prompting/Disabling ActiveX installation appears to be
default in IE7, so I left them unchanged (Prompt/Disable/Disable).

HOSTS file:
Replaced HOSTS file with the MVPS filed dated Apr-22-08. I noticed that
Spybot also had one that was backed up in the etc folder. Can I assume
that the MVPS version is more comprehensive than the Spybot S&D one?

I understand the recommendations are for general use, I was wondering
about my particular set up. I have Norton Internet Security 2007, seems
kinda waste to not use it. Given that it has Antiviral/spam/firewall
features, which of the ones you mentioned in your post should I add to
better protect my computer?

During the course of this repair/restoration I've installed...

Spybot S&D - Delete or Keep and not immunize?
HijackThis - Delete, download if I need it later?

Anti-Malware - Delete, download if I need it later?
XP Restoration Console - didn't use it, uninstall it?
ComboFix - You've already instructed me to uninstall it.

:FF: I already use FireFox 2.0.0.14 as my default browser, I'm just checking
out Safari 3.1.1. I almost never use Internet Explorer 7 except for running
Windows Update, or the rare webpage that requires IE (maybe once a month).
I run NoScript in FireFox so that takes care of most JavaScripts.

SpywareBlaster 4.0 - I'll probably install this.
IE-SPYAD - If I rarely use IE7 do I still need this? (I'm trying to conserve HD space)
SpywareGuard 2.2 - I'll look into this some more.

protection apps you recommended would have prevented Vundo or Virtumonde from infecting my computer? (Are those two the same trojan or two different things?)

I've implemented your suggestions. Initial access to the web from within a browser seems to have an initial delay of 10-15 seconds. Probably due to the larger host file, but I guess that's worth it for the protection.

Honestly, it would be pretty doubtful that they would have stopped Vundo. It is a pretty persistent infection. Hard to tell for sure.

If you near suspicious files and run them, only so much your protection can do
