Smitfraud-C Toolbar 888 -- How do we kill this

When I click on the file in extracts, goes thru the wizzard, and then installs -- I did turn off mcafee when installed it -- perhaps I didn't turn off all of mcafee so will try that again -- do u want me to unstill the version i have just installed since it does show on the add/remove programs list

Hi,

So the latest version does show in add/remove programs? Strange it doesn't show in your HijackThislog though - it's like it wasn't installed properly.
So yes, uninstall it and reinstall it again.
This is strange though - since it is in add/remove programs, this means that it is installed, but it should create some registry entries as well and showing in your HijackThislog, but none of them were created.
That's why I though Teatimer was interfering and blocking the keys - so not sure if you reinstalled Sun Java again also after you disabled Teatimer.

I did turn off tea timer and reset it the way u told me to and then even made sure it was still off before I downloaded and re-installed the sunjava file -- will uninstall again and then make sure mcafee and teatimer are off and then give it a shot -- what is itneresting is that when I go to the test page for jave I dont even get the little applet to even try to open and then fail -- nothing happens

what is itneresting is that when I go to the test page for jave I dont even get the little applet to even try to open and then fail
That's because, as I see from your log, the latest version is not even installed.
Also make sure you downloaded the correct version/install and not any other one, because on the download page, you can choose between many other installers.
You really had to choose for the "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1" version and not any other one.

I did download the correct version and tried it all again -- still no luck -- here is the hijackthis log -- and i get no error messages when I install it but when I click on the java icon on the control panel I get the same message I shared yest.

Your HijackThislog still doesn't show it being installed though... This is really confusing. Is it the offline version you downloaded? If you did, the installer should be called: "jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe"
This is the installer I asked you to download previously and that one should be on your desktop.
I am asking this, because in case you tried the online installer instead (which is called "jre-6u1-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe", it will also start the install wizard when you doubleclick to run it, but it will download the extra components to install from the Java website first and there it could happen that your McAfee Hackerwatch/Firewall blocks it.

So can you tell me how the installer for Java is called which is on your desktop?

Edit.. Also do next first:

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Under Browsing History, click "Delete".
  • Click "Delete Files", "Delete cookies" and "Delete history"
  • Click Close below.
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu..
  • Click the Clear now button below.. A new window will popup what to clear.
  • Select all and click the Clear button again.
  • Click OK to close the Options window
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.

Hi,

I've been doing some more research to find out what is causing this and I've found similar issues where the install went OK, even the finish screen was presented, but it wasn't properly installed.
The issue seemed to be an issue with Windows Installer, although Windows installer was registered properly (tried to re-register Windows installer again, but that didn't solve it). It was the msiexec.exe that was freezing during install and never properly finished the install, although it said finished in the installation wizard.
The user solved it by uninstalling Windows Installer 3.1, rebooted and then reinstalled Windows Installer 3.1 by using Windows update or reinstalling it from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&DisplayLang=en
Keep in mind, to reinstall Windows Installer, you really have to have a genuine version of Windows XP, otherwise you wouldn't be able to redownload the Windows installer 3.1.
Then the user was able to reinstall the Sun Java properly.

Thank You

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you -- finally had some time to fix all this and it seems to have worked -- u are outstanding

Hi,

Glad to hear. :)
I assume it was uninstalling Windows Installer and reinstalling it again that solved the issue? So you could properly install Sun Java?
