Smitfraud, IE death, BSODs etc, - it goes on :(

Hi,

Normally my computer works nice and fine,even though it's got an ancient CPU etc. Recently (well not even recently now) it's started to really mess up. Started off with simple IE pop-ups (I don't even use IE anymore), so I ran Spybot and Ad-Aware, they got rid of almost all the problems, but Spybot just couldn't manage to kill Smitfraud, even on safemode. I (stupidly) forgot about it for a while, until I started getting this C++ error about explorer.exe having buffer issues (a google on that said that it was caused by Hotbar- again, a search in Spybot zapped that, but it just can't get rid of the Smitfraud888 thingy).

I'm really stuck, so looked around, and found you lot here, so I'm hoping that one of you will be able o help me out here- as I'm getting a laptop in August/September, so I really don't want to have to wipe the pc for a few months left of use. As it is though, it's getting really unbearable. Now I get constant popups, even with IE working in offline mode, numerous BSODs when trying to play Guild Wars (an online game), and I can't upload anything to the internet whatsoever (while my mum's laptop on the same connection can). While I'm not exactly a novice user I'm completely out of my league here...

I tried doing several online virus scans, but they either all failed to update themselves (at 100%!!!), or IE crashed the second they were activated.

I'm Blade and I am going to try to help you with your problem. Please take a note of five things.

  1. I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine
  3. The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  4. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.

Please rename HijackThis.exe file -> scanner.exe to make possible hiding malware visible. Post a fresh hjt log after that.
 
Thanks, I understand that it's not a dfinite that you'll be able to fix it, but as my only other option is a wipe and os reinstall you're he best bet by far.

Anyway, I renamed hjt to scanner.exe and rescanned. I noticed (near the bottom) a dll that spybot often comes up with and removes (smitfraud I think- geebb.dll). I take it that's not good...

Please download
VundoFix.exe
to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files,
    click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing
    Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer,
    click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new
    HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above
instructions starting from
Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.

* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.

  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer to make following hjt fix work
  • Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
  • If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act?
      • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.

      • All checkboxes should be ticked.

I didn't get a chance to send the daldecys file to virustotal, as AVG quarantened it (so I take it it was bad anyways)- do you want me ot take it out of the quarantine anyway and send it for analysis?

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
  • Scroll down to where it says
    The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  • Click the
    Download
    button to the right.
  • Check the box that says:
    Accept License Agreement.
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.


After these steps do a rescan with Spybot to see if it still finds something.

Followed the instructions, and spybot came back with one registry entry from smitfraudtoolbar-888, which spybot cleaned out no problem. Do you want a new hjt report or is my system ok (or as ok as it'll ever be)?

Yes, you could post that hjt log for final check. :)

Did you have a reboot before you did rescan? Sometimes it looks like Spybot did it's job but new scan after reboot reveals that it's still there. If the entry came back post Spybot log.
 
Can't remember if I restarted before or after, sorry. I ran a new spybot scan and nothing came up- I'll post the hjt log when I can get the internet (mum's using it on her laptop- what I'm posting on).

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions. Before going any further I'd like to know which firewall you're using? In hjt log I spotted Comodo and Kaspersky Internet Security. If you have both Comodo and Kaspersky Internet Security's Anti-Hacker enabled then you should decide which one to disable.


THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

We need to re hide system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  3. Click the View tab.
  4. Put a check by
    Hide file extensions for known file types.
  5. Under the
    Hidden files
    folder, select
    Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Check
    Hide protected operating system files.
  7. Click Apply, and then click OK.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.


Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
Change the allow paste operations via script to Disable
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.



The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

  • Download Adaware
    Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial

  • Download SpywareBlaster
    Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
    kill bits
    in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.

  • Download iespyad
    It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
    bad
    webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).

  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
    Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
    If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    1. [*]Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) [*]Click run [*]In the dialog box, type services.msc [*]hit enter, then locate dns client [*]Highlight it, then double-click it. [*]On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. [*]Click ok


Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Thanks. I haven't been getting much time lately (exams/revision etc) to go on the computer (hence why my replies have been taking so long), but I'll get that stuff done as soon as I have time.

I's using COMODO for firewall and Kaspersky for my AV (kasperky firewall was just killing my cpu very time I wanted to connect to the internet- it wasn't worth waiting 10 minutes for kaspersky to decide that google was safe).

Normally my computer's all updated, but I reinstalled xp just before coming to the forums here (this was before I did some research and discovered that the C++ Internal buffer error was crapware rather than a problem with explorer). I'll get the thing updated too- should I do ths before or after the above ist or doesn't it matter?
