Hello,
I attempted to post prior to this but some popups appeared and I believe I was logged out. If that post does appear and this one does also, please accept my apologies.

Our computer has become infected with adware/spyware, many popup ads are driving us crazy. Anything you can do to help with this situation would be very much appreciated. I have taken the steps you outline as follows:
1) Loaded Spybot 1.4

2) Ran the eTrust scan, results were:
Scan Results: 119020 files scanned. 1 virus was detected.

3) Ran Trend Micro scan, it found some more stuff but not sure if it fixed anything.

4) Ran Spybot in safe mode, fixed all items on first shot. However, we are continuing to have problems with both IE and Mozilla.

5) Downloaded Hijack this, here is the resulting file:

Hi

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Then drag the ComboFix-Do.txt into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.
4. Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

First we'll need to backup registry:

Start -> Run -> regedit -> ok. Then File -> Export. Give it a name and press Save.

Save text below as fix.reg on Notepad (save it as all files (*.*)) on Desktop

Doubleclick fix.reg, press Yes and ok.

Reboot

Delete if present:

Empty Recycle Bin.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
• Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
• Now click on Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
  
  o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  
  + Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
  
  o Scan Options:
  
  + Scan Archives
  + Scan Mail Bases
  
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
• Now click on the Save as Text button
• Save the file to your desktop.
• Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi again,
I gave Viewpoint the boot but was only able to locate the Viewpoint Manager and the Media player. I did not locate anything called Viewpoint alone.

I am a little confused on the next process, do I do the HJT scan, check the items you listed and fix them, then do the registry backup? Or is there another sequence that I am somehow missing?

Sorry to be a dunce but I would rather ask before doing something I don't quite follow.

fix.reg problem

I removed all the Viewpoint programs.

I ran the HJT scan, checked the boxes you indicated, and hit the "fix" button. I reran the HJT scan and the items were gone.

I backed up the registry per your instructions, saved it to the desktop.

I copied and pasted the two lines into wordpad, hit enter at the end to open up a line at the end per the instructions on the link to create a reg file, and saved it as "all files" named fix.reg on the Desktop:

The file looks exactly as you show it in your message (registry icon). This is what I keep getting when I try to run the fix.reg:
