Smitfraud?

I believe my laptop has some form of the smitfraud malware and would welcome guidance about how best to remove it. I've seen the responses to other postings about the virus but also noted the general warning not to follow the advice given to other posts because every problem is specific.

So here are the symptoms: I've lost the control panel, can't perform various functions (get error message telling me to contact systems administrator, which I am on this home computer), and regularly get a "Windows Security Alert" telling me that my computer is "making unauthorized copies of your system and Internet files...." I've run Spybot; it detected Smitfraud, deleted it, was there the next time I searched, but is now gone. CoolWOWsearch also returned at least once after deletion, but is also now gone. I should note that Spybot identifies a number of Microsoft Windows problems that I have not elected to fix, not really understanding what other consequences would follow. (For example: several entries under Microsoft Windows SecurityCenter (TaskManager, RedirectedHosts,FirewallOverride, etc)). I also can't update my virus protection program; it simply stops after a point.

I've tried to access the Kaspersky on-line scan, but I've not been able to -- my system hasn't been able to find the server all day.

Lets do few things.

Please download SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.


I need to see a complete Hijackthis log

  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Let me see the Smitfraud report and a New Complete HJT log please

Your computer is heavily infected, not only with Smitfraud but a few other nasty things. Lets attack Smitfraud first or it can get overwhelming for you.


We need to disable the Tea Timer in Spybot Search and Destroy as to not interfere with the fix.
  • Open Spybot and go to Mode> Advanced Mode> Tools> Resident and take the checkmark out of Tea Timer


You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.


Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.

  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <-- Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <-- Do not run the scan yet.



Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

  • Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart into normal Windows.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt




  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:


Reboot normally.


  • Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
  • Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.


Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up



Download HostsXpert v 4.0
  • Unzip HostXpert to your desktop
  • Open up the HostXpert program.
  • Make sure that the "Make Hosts Writable?" button in the upper right corner is enabled.
  • Click Create Back Up
  • Then click on Restore Microsoft's Host Files
  • Close the HostXpert program


Please follow the instructions to the letter for AVG as its very important that I see the log.

I ran the AVG antispyware program, selecting as a setting automatically run report upon completion of every scan. The scan is now complete (I'm using a different computer), but no report was generated. The infected files have been quarantined. Should I re-run the scan? Restore the files and then re-run? Or is there a better way to get you the information you need? (I could manually type the information in the quarantine section if that would be helpful). For now, I'll leave the infected computer in safe mode with the AVG program with the scan results open.

If you could go into the Quarantine folder and see if you can highlight it all and press Cont. C to copy and then paste it into this thread. If you can't , don't lose any sleep over it. Do not run the scan again and do not Restore the files.

Post the Smitfraud log and a new HJT log please.

Lets look into the hosts file in a bit, there is more pressing items to take care of.

Your infected with the SDBot worm. Its important that you run this in Safemode.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply

Things are looking up. I regard as a good sign that Avenger can't find the offending file. I have my control panel back and effective functionality. Two small issues: (1) my virus protection software can't seem to update -- it starts and can't complete; and (2) start up time seems slow (though that's not a complaint, given the mess I started with! -- it's just a wonder).

Two other questions. Should I re-enable teatime in spybot? And should I be deleting any of the quarantined files, such as in AVG?

C:\WINDOWS\system32\explore.exe Lets make sure its gone, its real bad. You need to enable windows to show all files and folders. Be careful because explore.exe in the windows folder is legit and needed for your system to run.

I am looking at Sygate Personal Firewall and also you have Symantec Internet Security Suite that most likely includes a firewall, you only want one firewall , decide which one you want and uninstall the other one. If your happy with Norton and it includes a firewall then I would uninstall Sygate. This could be your problem updating your virus program.


You should open AVG and delete everything in the Quarantine folder.

Your system has been through hell and back , it may take some time to catch its breath.


In a day or two when you feel your system is running well and stable, you need to flush out your system restore program because everything we removed is most likley backed up in there and you can reinfect your self if you ever use that program.


System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

  • Right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.


Reboot your computer


Turn ON System Restore.

  • Right-click My Computer.
  • ClickProperties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.


Create a new Restore Point <-- Very Important

  • Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
    You need to go into the Control Panel and switch to Catagory View to be able to Create a New Restore Point

Ok Listen up, a few years ago in the days of windows 3,1 and then 95, kids wrote viruses, they thought it was funny to infect you and the infection made your screen change color, well times have changed, there are things going around now that are not very nice, there very nasty, they can steal your passwords, banking account numbers, they can take complete control over your computer and do anything they wish with it, sometimes the only resort is a format and a clean install of windows, I am saying this because you had some nasty stuff and you might want to rethink about the sites you go in and the email you open.

I am listing some tips to stay clean, you can turn the TeaTimer back on.
