Spybot Christmas Presents, Part 1: Bootable CD

Not sure about the RAM disk issue. The tool more or less follows the default MS recommendation to create such a malware repair CD, I do not remember visible parameters no tweak that behaviour. How much memoy has the system you try the CD on?
224MB of RAM, some parts of RAM are taken from the integrated graphics card.

Great tool.

I have used Barts PE with Spybot SE for years with great success but I started getting errors when SB updated to 1.6. SB 1.4 would report problems with the definitions.

I'm happy to have a second bootable CDROM for SB 1.6 and your other plugins.

Unfortunately I can't add any drivers for Network cards and that prevents downloading updates directly.

How about providing a way we can add current definitions for SB 1.6 on one PC and then burn another CDR with those definitions to take to the problem PC.

I have tried and spent altogether too much time to find a Barts PE plugin for SB 1.6 which in my case would be the ideal but as I said I can live with a 2nd bootable CDROM.

It would be nice to have the possibility to add ahci controllers and network cards drivers and also choose if create a 32bit or a 64bit CD.

I have followed all the instructions and everything works great, right up to an including booting from the CD. However, once the CD boots, I have no way to select programs from the interface - my mouse and keyboard do nothing!

What do I need to do?

Thanks!

I just thought, maybe I have no USB driver. Will plugging in an old mouse/keyboard into the mouse/keyboard jacks work?

There is a guide to make plug-ins?

for example to take a file from "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\My application\file.dat" can I use "<required>[$ALLUSERSPROFILE]\Application Data\My application\file.dat</required>"?

@Tommy Bear: I have to admit the CD itself is a bit "raw". It offers the basics, not everything custom PE CDs might offer. Non-USB devices are probably better supported, but I'm a bit astonished that yours aren't. Are they directly attached, or through an USB hub? Bare Vista has problems with the later.

We do plan a much improved version as soon as we have more clarity from MS about licensing (regarding: offering finished CDs for those who find the tools & download requirements to much hazzle).

@ale5000: I've started documenting it here, but will need to read up a few things in the source to make sure its all correct. Might take a few days.

@PepiMK: Have you tried to put many applications on the cd? some are shown at the right, out from the screen and also the icon of applications added by me aren't the icon of executables.

Also would be nice the possibility to add a service since there are applications that need it.

Adding updated detection rules

I have found that by downloading and installing the latest detection rules on my PC and then copying them to "C:\Program Files\Safer Networking\Spybot-S&D Boot CD creator\plugins\Includes" when I build the Spybot BootCD these rules are applied to the BootCD.

I have also found that when I build my BootCD the Update.exe and Uninstall.exe are shown on the taskbar. Would there be a way to prevent this? We can't use either of them and they occupy extremely rare taskbar space. Would it be possible to use the desktop to show available applications?

Now I have to say this is turning out to be an excellent exercise.

Thanks for the work.

Failure to complete AIK installation

I tried to use the creator program, but, after downloading the AIK, I can proceed no further. The AIK is saved as c:\Program Files\Windows AIK\vista_6000.16386.061101-2205-LRMAIK_EN.img but the setup window reports that "The AIK installation oes not seem to be complete. The required tool imagex.exe ... peimg.exe ... oscdimg.exe was not found". Reply #23 above talked about this 3 years ago, but where is the default location please? what am I doing wrong? What can I do if I have no DVD burner?

Have you tried the thing commented about above in #35?

I had to copy
C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\amd64\oscdimg.exe
to
C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools
to make it working with Boot CD Creator

The fixed version is not out you, so this step might be required. If its not a 64 bit machine, copy the one from C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\x86\oscdimg.exe.

Anyway... after downloading the .img, you have to install its contents first, not sure if you did that? Without a burner, you would need some image mounting app. If you have Ahead Nero, it allows to mount images to drive letters. Otherwise, DaemonTools is an alternative. Both offer an additional virtual drive that can represent the contents of the archive. From there, you can install the AIK.

Thanks. I have only the one file in C:\Program Files\Windows AIK, and no sub directories. How do I install the contents of the .img file, please?

You must burn your .img file to cdrom as an image file, or as was mentioned previously mount the image to an emulated drive. After burning the .img to a cdrom you will then have a cdrom you can install the software from.

The files you need will be installed after running the the installation program.

Sorry, I should have read the initial response more carefully. I have now used the Daemon Tools virtual DVD as described, and successfully installed the AIK. Again, many thanks - now to burn a cd and get my friend's computer free of malware once more! :alien:

Unable to boot [laptop] with boot disc

OK I have managed to produce the boot-up cd and I have proved that it works well (on my laptop, with 2GB RAM). But my friend's laptop displays the following screen when I try to use the boot-up cd:

"Windows Boot Manager
"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
"1. Insert your Windows istallation disc and restart your computer.
"2. Choose your language settings and thenclick "Next."
"3. Click "Repair your computer."
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance."

The laptop in question is infected with Malware Defender 2009. It has "192M System RAM (Passed) and 1024k Cache SRAM (Passed)" according to the start-up screen message and 256MB RAM according to the system information program and huge amounts of space on the HDD (>5GB) No hardware has been changed from new. The only software changes have been the installation of Spybot, Avira, and Comodo Firewall. How much RAM is required to boot with the cd? Do I need to upgrade the RAM? Any suggestions, please?

BTW, I don't have a Windows XP disc to hand. If I use <ESC> another screen comes up, but hitting <Enter> on either available option returns me to the screen above.

never mind. didn't see the other responces. sorry.

You need to mount/burn the img file to a DVD drive, INSTALL Windows AIK onto your system to C:\Program Files\Windows AIK. Then it will work.

It's clearly stated on the screen in step 1 of the interface after you click on the bolded text which send you to the download site.

I love this tool.

My only issue would be that I wish the update feature worked. Every time I try to use it I get an error retrieving updates.

I think it has to do with the network cards not installing or drivers missing. If there was a way to include specific NIC card drivers, that would perfect.

In the mean time, I just cook a new ISO once a week and boot with GRUB4DOS.
