Spybot refuses to scan

I just downloaded and installed Spybot, and as was advised used the built-in updater to update everything before doing anything. The immunization went fine, but when I tried to scan I got the error message telling me that I need to install the updates with the built-in updater or manually. I tried downloading the manual update and installing that, but got the same result even after uninstalling and reinstalling Spybot then installing the manual update package.

I'm running XP on a fairly old computer, if that helps any. Thanks in advance ^^;

Before you run your first scan you need to install the detection updates first.

Just download and run that file - it is self-installing.

...I already did that. When I run the built-in updater it says that there are no newer updates, which makes perfect sense because I already used it to get the updates.
