Spyware Wizard help

First let me start by saying that I am hardly what you would call "computer savvy"...

My home page, MSN now has a message that I have been infected by a virus and there are several pornographic pictures that come up. It directs me to purchase "Spyware Wizard" the website is coming up as -
spywarewizard.net/?ref-John_p

I have tried a few things (again, not very knowledgable about computers).

I am worried because my children like the computer and these pics are extremely disturbing.

Any advice would be great!

I don't see a thing in the HJT log, so what ever is causing this is hidden. This is how we will start.

1) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\ <<< your Java program is out of date and if you are not infected because of this, it is just a matter of time. See this information:

In Add Remove programs, uninstall all old versions and update to the newest. While there, look for Spyware Wizard and uninstall it if there. Uninstall all programs you know do not belong there. If you are unsure, let me know and I will look.

2) Smitfraud infections can be totally hidden and these instructions will check for it.
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Download, update, run and post the scan results along with the report from Smitfraudfix. Include a new HJT log just in case anything shows.

I need feedback from you, what did you find in Add Remove programs? What symptoms are you still receiving? Are you getting any error messages? The tools we have run so far are showing nothing, I depend on you to keep me informed.

Try renaming C:\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe <<< point at the .exe and right click, then rename it to onthegopm.exe, the next HJT log may show us something.

Just absolutely nothing showing, let me hear from you. Restart the computer and post a new HJT log.

I'll be honest, I can't tell if some of the things in my add/remove programs are suppose to be in there or not...or even what their use is if it is in there. Is there a way you can tell? And per your suggestion I did reboot, and when I when I clicked on the butterfly to go online through MSN, I got the sane MSN privacy error and the page still came up to purchase this spywizard in order to remove the pornographic images.

I will work on the renaming you mentioned and get back with you.

I will mention that I have the same problem that another person did that you helped on 7/28-31 of 2006. That users name was Stasia. Maybe that would lead you to what I'm dealin with???

Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.

7/28-31 of 2006 <<< since then I have worked on hundreds of logs, no way I can remember. Do you have a link to the topic.
As I said, Spyware Wizard is a rouge product and the Vundo trojan often points to those (usually called Winfixer) and these hackers change their tactics faster than we can keep up. Just please remember you are my eyes, ears and senses. I depend on the information you provide and the reports from the tools we use to proceed, and their is no clearcut trail. In this case, nothing is showing so I am looking for any kind of a clue to tell me what tools to use.
Let's see how it goes, I am on Windows Live Messenger and we can work in real time if need be.

Did I do the renaming right of the HJT? I noticed it still said "logfile of hijackThis". (just checking).

Yes, you did it right but it is showing nothing. I am still looking at the uninstall list but nothing is jumping out as a problem. Got me scratching my head. Try making sure you have all files and folder enabled and the use Start > Search > All files and folders. Then search for Spyware Wizard to see if anything comes up. I will get back to you as soon as I have an idea. I am interest in any information you can give me about any of the popups, exactly where they redirect you to.

I found two things when I did a search:

1) file: www.spywarewizard[1], in the recycle bin, 4KB, text document, last modified 11/30/06.

2) file www.spywarewizard[2], in C:\documentsandsettings\owner\cookies, 1KB, text document, last modified 12/1/06.

Then when I click on their link to their spyware product, I am taken to this address: www.spywarewizard.net/?ref-John_P

A few times after I exited out of the spywarewizard address, it has taken me back to the "what use to be the msn" homepage, and that address would be www.my.systemsecure.org......but not always, most of the time it takes me back to the "zeta.main" address. This "my.systemsecure" is referenced in that link that you found.

I will look through that link again also.

I truly apologize, but I do have to take about a four hour break for a scheduled engagement. I've have greatly appreciated your work on this for me. I will be back later this evening.

As I look closer at your original HJT log, I have a couple of questions:

Who is your Internet Service Provider?
I see C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\bin\mpbtn.exe
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Verizon Online
and a lot of AOL stuff? Is this a coperative effort or is aol an old ISP that can be removed?

I am also concerned that it appears McAfee is your antivirus software but I see this:

Please make sure you post the information I requested in post #14 before moving to these instruction.

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

3) AVG antispyware\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exe <<< disable this:
Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

4) Spyware Doctor <<< disable like this: From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".

We need to decide what program you are going to run, Spyware Doctor or Windows Defender. You do not need both, they will conflict.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Will run a little slow for a couple of boots until Windows repopulates Prefetch

Where it says Change your Home Page, I want you to put this in the Address box where it says Home page:
http://www.msn.com/ then please click on Apply and OK at the bottom.
Then check to see what home page you go to when you click on the Butterfly or open Internet Explorer which ever you do.

Now let's block this address: http://www.my.systemsecure.org/Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Privacy tab > Sites button > Address of Website: copy and paste the address into the box and click Block then OK.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, let me know how the computer is running. I also need the information from my last post, we have a bit of cleanup to do, once I have answers to the questions I posted.

Internet Provider? My provider is Verizon Online DSL with MSN Premium, and MSN is my home page. On my desktop I click on the MSN butterfly to get online.

As for the AOL stuff...my computer came equipped with alot of AOL stuff on it. I use to have an AOL account, but I no longer do - it's been about a year that I stopped using the AOL account. I have no need for the AOL stuff.

The anivirus software. I think I have gotten out of hand on this. I didn't know that Symantec Shared was an anitvirus software. To the best of my knowledge, I never used it. I had been using McAfee, but when all this started happening a few days ago, I panicked, figured all my antivirus software was out of date and overdid it on the new softwares. In my haste/panic I added a paid program Spydoctor...oh yes, this is just a few minutes after I loaded Windows defender onto my computer! So, since I'm paying for Spydoctor, should I remove McAfee, Windows Defender and the Symantec Shared?

Napster. That one did catch my eye when I scanned through my add/remove programs list. I have no idea what it is. To the best of my knowledge, I haven't used it.

I have uninstalled Viewpoint Media Player.

After double-checking, I realized I misspoke previously...as you know Spydoctor is not an antivirus software but a spyware software. And it appears from your link to the Washington post that multiple spyware softwares is ok...is that right?

Go ahead and finish with the instructions, once that is done and I see a new HJT log, we will work on removing the junk you do not use. I believe one good active Spyware program is all that should be running. Try this: http://support.microsoft.com/ > Select a Product Solution Center > Windows Defender > email to save your free support and ask if you can safely run Windows Defender at the same time as Spyware Doctor. Share that information with me please.

I have to look closer but it appears you are also running:
McAfee AntiSpyware <<< ask Microsoft about this and Windows Defender also.
McAfee Personal Firewall Plus <<< If this is activated, the SP2 and all other firewalls should be off.
McAfee SecurityCenter <<< Right click and "Open Security Center". Under "My Service Status" you can tell me what you are running. Sorry this is complex, but these are major issues that effect how your security programs work.

Good news. After I completed all the steps in #14, when I go online - the error message and images are gone...and it properly goes to my msn homepage! MAJOR HURRAY!

As you requested, I submitted a question to microsoft to see if Windows Defender is compatible with Spydoctor or McAfee Antispyware. The message said to allow 24 hours for a response. Since I am now paying for Spydoctor, if there is a conflict with other products, I will probably keep Spydoctor.

My McAfee Security Center says it is providing me with: Viruscan, and Personal Firewall Plus.

I would pursue the information from Microsoft, if they say you can run Defender along with Spyware Doctor, I would appreciate that information. You can always click my avatar and send me a PM.
If they say no and your subscription to SD expires, you may want to reconsider?

Let's look at junk installed that you do not need. It is much better to uninstall stuff in Add Remove programs. The uninstallers generally do a better job. Once that is done, we will look at the HJT log for any leftovers to remove manually. Let me say I see no "malware" but since you do not use aol or symantec, stuff is running that you do not need.

Ad-Aware SE Personal: a great free program, keep it updated (1.06r1) and run it once a month and more often if you surf a lot.

(I suggest you uninstall all of this)

Windows Defender <<< leave it alone until Microsoft confirms being able to run it with Spyware Doctor.

Yahoo! Toolbar <<< I see you run Google toolbar, if you don't use this, I would uninstall it.

Once we are done, you want to do a big time maintenance, run defragg and check disk to clean up all of the holes the uninstallers create.

That should keep you busy for a while, once it is complete, post a new HJT log and let me know how the computer is running. I will see what is left in the HJT log the uninstallers did not remove and answer any last questions for you at that point.
