SpywareQuake Removal

Hi, I am new to the forums. I've removed spyware similar to this before, and usually I try and figure it out for myself, but I'm just tired of it you know? I need help.

I've got a little flashing icon in my taskbar. On mouse-over it says "Virus Alert!" and when I click it, it pops up a little red box saying "Your computer is infected!" and a bunch of other stuff. Then when I click the box it leads me to the website wxxx:spywarequake.com (which is obviously more spyware).

It seems like SpyFalcon just picked up a new name or something. Anyway, my HijackThis and Panda ActiveScan logs are below:

Welcome to the forum, sounds like Smitfraud trojan to me, follow these directions carefully and post the three logs at the end of the instructions. I will be notified and check to see if there is more to do as soon as possible after that.

Just a little more to do. For some reason I can't fathom, you choose to "take no action" when you ran ewido. Please rerun it and if it finds anything(unless you are sure it is not bad) have ewido delete it.

We have a file giving us trouble that is probably a trojan, and probably not part of the Smitfraud infection?

How to use the Delete on Reboot tool

At times you may find a file that stubbornly refuses to be deleted by conventional means. HijackThis introduced, in version 1.98.2, a method to have Windows delete the file as it boots up, before the file has the chance to load. To do this follow these steps:

Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now, otherwise click on the No button to reboot later.

Once again, this is the file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.dll

Post a clean ewido scan report and a new HJT log, along with any comments you think will help.

I'm not sure why it said "no action taken," as I did quarantine them. I didn't delete them until now though. I ran an Ewido scan, and this time it found a whole bunch of stuff it didn't before.

I tried going into HijackThis and choosing to delete a file at reboot, but when I click the option at first it exited HJT, and all the times after that it just does nothing. I'm not sure why, a bug in HJT?

I looked in my system32 folder, and there was no "dllhost.dll" but a "dllhost.exe." I ran a search and there is also a "dllhost.exe" in my C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder. They are identical in size, but I'm not sure if they are the same.

I am getting popups on my PC now too, so I'm guessing there is still a lot of adware to be dealt with. It pops up not just in IE, but Windows Exporer also.

It is a very important part of the operating system and the second file you are finding is a backup in case it is ever needed.

We are after this one: O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.dll and it is still in the log. Did you run a scan to see what that item is? I would like to see that information. Once you do that then download, read the instructions and use Killbox to delete that file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.dll

Since you are getting Winfixer popups, chances are you have a Vundo trojan. The hackers have learned to hide it from HJT. I want you to do this.
D:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe <<< return to here and rename the file to HJT.exe then restart the computer and scan for then post a new HJT log.

I'll give you the Vundo instruction in a moment, sometimes it goes easy, sometimes it is hard. We need to discuss this item: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.dll

This is a problem, because we can not get done until we clean that item. I did give you tools to check it when you find it:

Don't rely on HJT, you just saw the hackers hide an infection from HJT, they know we are using the tool. Use Search Companion. Start > Search > All Files and Folders. Make sure you have hidden files and folder enabled or you will never see it. I wish I could find it for you, unfortunately you are the one in front of the computer.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
• You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
• When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
• Turn your computer back on.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

I ran a Windows search for "dllhost" and "dllhost.dll," including system folders and hidden files, and it found only the few .exe's located in different Windows folders. I cannot locate this file when attempting the online scans. According to everything and everyone besides HJT, the file doesn't exist?

I also ran VundoFix, and followed the instructions exactly. When the search was completed it told me that no infected files were found. So maybe it isn't Vundo?

There is no doubt this is the Vundo trojan. Look at the Google on it:

This site: http://www.bullguard.com/forum/10/Pmkhfdll-Vundo-Trojan-cannot-d_29622.html even offers a complex manual removal for it. The hackers have made the CLSID number and the .dll random so Atribune's tool will not recognize it. He has made a way for us to add that information, and we will try that first.

Follow these directions carefully.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
You will receive a message saying Vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK.
When VundoFix re-opens, click Scan for Vundo button.
Once the scan is complete, right-click inside the listbox (white box) and click Add more files
Copy & paste the entry below into the box:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhf.dll
Click Add Files and click Close Window.

Click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a fresh HiJackThis log.

I followed your instructions. When I fixed dllhost.dll using HJT, it removed the line successfully but it did give me an error message afterwards.

I ran VundoFix and did what you said, added the file to the list and chose Remove Vundo. It said that it was unable to delete the file and that it would attempt to do so at reboot. However, it was unsuccessful, and I am looking at the file right now in my system32 folder. Perhaps I should use KillBox to remove pmkhf.dll? I'll wait for your feedback. Fresh logs:

Sure, you can try Killbox on it, try all three methods of killing it if you wish. I have a couple of more methods, including ask the creator of the fix to add the CLSID number, but that might take some time.

Make sure you have followed all directions for the installation. It should be running for the Desktop. Don't be afraid to try it several times, it might work the second. Some if these infections are hard to remove.

You can also give this Vundo removal tool a try if you wish:
Please download VirtumundoBeGone:
http://secured2k.home.comcast.net/tools/VirtumundoBeGone.exe
* Save it to the Desktop
* Close all running programs (including your Internet Browser)
* Double-click VirtumundoBeGone.exe on the Desktop
* Follow the directions as indicated

This program may generate a "BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH" which is an expected/necessary part of the process.
Do not be concerned.
Just reboot if your system "jams".

To confirm successful deletion, and determine if there are any additional problems, please post the VirtumundoBeGone log VBG.txt. It is found on the Desktop.

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
